Book Compaction Tests on Gravelly Soils with Cohesive Soil Matrix

Download or read book Compaction Tests on Gravelly Soils with Cohesive Soil Matrix written by Robert W. Cunny and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of ES 521-A, 'Effect of Maximum Particle Size, Triaxial Compression and Compaction Tests, ' compaction tests were performed on a gravelly material with cohesive binder to determine the effect of large-size particles on maximum dry density and optimum water content and to obtain data for use in preparing the triaxial specimens. The effect of mold diameter and the effect of scalping both with and without replacement for oversize material were also investigated.

Book Research on Compaction Control Testing for Gravelly Soils

Download or read book Research on Compaction Control Testing for Gravelly Soils written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compaction characteristics were made of soils containing gravel in amounts varying from 0 to 50 percent by weight of the total material. The purpose was to obtain data for studying the compaction characteristics of gravelly soils. Three methods are given for calculating the density of the fine fraction in a gravelly soil. A method for controlling the compaction of gravelly soils is suggested. This method involves the use of a correction factor. (Author).

Book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book Compaction Characteristics of Non Gravel and Gravelly Soils Using a Small Compaction Apparatus

Download or read book Compaction Characteristics of Non Gravel and Gravelly Soils Using a Small Compaction Apparatus written by Avirut Chinkulkijniwat and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard Proctor test has been widely used and accepted for characterizing soil compatibility for field compaction control. This paper presents a time- and cost-effective method to predict standard Proctor compaction characteristics of non-gravel and gravelly soils using a proposed small apparatus. This small apparatus is similar to the standard Proctor apparatus and easily introduced into soil mechanics laboratory. A comparison of the compaction characteristics of non-gravel soils measured from the proposed small apparatus and from the standard Proctor apparatus shows that this small apparatus can be used as an alternative to the standard Proctor apparatus and regarded as a practical tool for non-gravel soils. For gravelly soils, gravel content mainly controls compaction energy transmitted to the fine fraction and hence its compaction characteristics. A relationship between the generalized optimum water content of the fine fraction in the gravelly soil and the gravel content is established. This relationship leads to an effective method of predicting standard Proctor compaction characteristics of gravelly soils compacted in standard molds using compaction results from the proposed small apparatus. Comparisons between the predicted and the measured compaction characteristics are in very good agreement.
