Book The Gilbert episode in the Great Salt Lake Basin Utah

Download or read book The Gilbert episode in the Great Salt Lake Basin Utah written by Charles Gifford Oviatt and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 20-page report summarizes observations of sediments and shorelines of the Gilbert episode in the Bonneville basin of northwestern Utah. Lake Bonneville dropped to altitudes similar to those of modern Great Salt Lake by 13,000 years ago, remained low for about 1400 years, then rapidly rose about 50 ft (15 m) during the Gilbert episode (about 11,600 years ago). The Gilbert lake was probably less extensive than shown by previous mapping of the Gilbert shoreline. The lake reached altitudes of 4250-4255 ft (1295-1297 m), and its shoreline, which is not well defined anywhere in the basin, was probably not deformed by residual isostatic rebound associated with removal of the Lake Bonneville water load. Holocene Great Salt Lake has not risen as high as the Gilbert-episode lake.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Salt Lake: Present and Past In some parts the following pages are reprints of articles that have appeared over the writer's signature in local and scientific periodicals; in other portions they are little more than a compilation of facts already of record. Perhaps sufficient excuse for the present publication may be found in the fact that reliable information regarding the Great Salt Lake is of difficult access to the general reader, inasmuch as it is mostly contained in the valuable though ponderous tomes of the national surveys. The popular writings on the subject, with some exceptions, have been criticized as extravagant and untrustworthy. The truth regarding Utah's Dead Sea is sufficiently impressive without recourse to fabulous embellishment, even if such were in any sense justifiable. The writer has drawn freely on the valuable records of investigators, and acknowledgment of authorities has been made in place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great Salt Lake is an enormous terminal lake in the western United States. It is a highly productive ecosystem, which has global significance for millions of migrating birds who rely on this critical feeding station on their journey through the American west. For the human population in the adjacent metropolitan area, this body of water provides a significant economic resource as industries, such as brine shrimp harvesting and mineral extraction, generate jobs and income for the state of Utah. In addition, the lake provides the local population with ecosystem services, especially the creation of mountain snowpack that generates water supply, and the prevention of dust that may impair air quality. As a result of climate change and water diversions for consumptive uses, terminal lakes are shrinking worldwide, and this edited volume is written in this urgent context. This is the first book ever centered on Great Salt Lake biology. Current and novel data presented here paint a comprehensive picture, building on our past understanding and adding complexity. Together, the authors explore this saline lake from the microbial diversity to the invertebrates and the birds who eat them, along a dynamic salinity gradient with unique geochemistry. Some unusual perspectives are included, including the impact of tar seeps on the lake biology and why Great Salt Lake may help us search for life on Mars. Also, we consider the role of human perceptions and our effect on the biology of the lake. The editors made an effort to involve a diversity of experts on the Great Salt Lake system, but also to include unheard voices such as scientists at state agencies or non-profit advocacy organizations. This book is a timely discussion of a terminal lake that is significant, unique, and threatened.

Explorer Jedediah Smith, surrounded by a vast wilderness, realized this felt to him like home. Conservationist John Muir found in the briny waters a sublime baptism and came out, in his words, salted and clean as a saint. Nineteenth-century Utahns built the first resorts, such as Saltair; bathed and floated in the water; and began extracting valuable salts and minerals from the ever-fluctuating lake. Ringed with wildlife refuges, it is a haven for migrating birds. With multiple state parks, Antelope Island among them, Great Salt Lake is today a magnet for sight-seeing, swimming, hiking, biking, horse riding, and sailing--just a few of the ways to experience what pioneer-era surveyor Howard Stansbury described as a "great and peculiar beauty."
