Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art, Commerce and Colonialism 1600-1800 examines European art, architecture and design of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the light of the continent's growing engagement with the rest of the world. In a series of case studies spanning the globe from Asia to the Americas, it shows how the expansion of intercontinental trade and the proliferation of colonial ventures gave rise to new and diverse forms of visual and material culture. Among the examples discussed are ornate altarpieces in the cathedrals of colonial Latin America, Dutch still-life paintings of exotic luxury imports, English interior decoration in the Chinoiserie style and the architecture of plantation houses in North America and the Caribbean. Drawing on a wide range of recent scholarship, the book proposes a new history of European art 1600-1800, which should appeal to undergraduate students as well as to a general readership

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global community, dependent as always on the cooperation of nation states, is gradually learning to address the serious threats to the cultural heritage of our disparate but shared civilizations. The legacy of conquest, colonialization, and commerce looms large in defining and explaining these threats. The essays contained in this challenging volume are based on papers presented at an international conference on cultural heritage issues that took place at Willamette University. The conference sought to generate fresh ideas about these cultural heritage issues; offer a good sense of their nuances and complexities; and reveal how culture, law, and ethics can interact, complement, diverge, and contradict one another.

Download or read book Conquest and Commerce written by James Lang and published by New York : Academic Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In English America, colonial society did not simmer for several decades in the face of unpopular reforms. Reaction to the Stamp Act was almost immediate. The assemblies played a central role in shaping this reaction. The Crown attacked the center. The center resisted. Resistance to the mother country in English America was organized by the most comprehensive political institution, the assembly. The Continental Congress was its creation. The problem of authority was resolved before the revolution commenced. In Spanish America, the institutional base of the revolt was the cabildo, the least comprehensive political unit. The problem of authority, the issue of who should govern and to whose benefit, was at the heart of the rebellion. The independence movement in Spanish America faced a situation fundamentally more complex than the difficulties experienced by revolutionary leaders in English America. The assembly could levy taxes, raise armies, and issue currency. It was an established institution that held together the dominant interests of colonial society. The revolution in English America sustained and defended a basic, operating, legitimate institutional framework. The ideology of the revolution came from the assembly. -- Pg. 235.
