This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of hybrid genotypes more need to increase the edible oil production and it qulity traits because of increasing the human population. Eight genotypes (Golarchi, Star, Range, DGL, Ayub2000, Hybripol, Lagena and BA0714.) were crossed in Line x Tester mating design (5x3). and their F1s were sown in field in RCBD with three replications. Data of 15 F1s and their parents were recorded for various seed yield and yield contributing traits. The data were statistically analyzed for analysis of variance and LxT analysis. The ANOVA for combining ability were revealed that the mean sum of squares due to lines were significant for all traits except days to 90% flowering and for testers the mean sum of square were significant for all traits except days to 90% flowering and 1000 seed weight. Highly significant results were found in LxT interaction for all traits. The estimates of SCA variance was noticed higher than GCA variance in all traits. The contributions of lines as compared to testers were greater in case of all the traits of Brassica napus."

Book Genetics and Genomics of the Brassicaceae

Download or read book Genetics and Genomics of the Brassicaceae written by Renate Schmidt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-03 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genetics and Genomics of the Brassicaceae provides a review of this important family (commonly termed the mustard family, or Cruciferae). The family contains several cultivated species, including radish, rocket, watercress, wasabi and horseradish, in addition to the vegetable and oil crops of the Brassica genus. There are numerous further species with great potential for exploitation in 21st century agriculture, particularly as sources of bioactive chemicals. These opportunities are reviewed, in the context of the Brassicaceae in agriculture. More detailed descriptions are provided of the genetics of the cultivated Brassica crops, including both the species producing most of the brassica vegetable crops (B. rapa and B. oleracea) and the principal species producing oilseed crops (B. napus and B. juncea). The Brassicaceae also include important “model” plant species. Most prominent is Arabidopsis thaliana, the first plant species to have its genome sequenced. Natural genetic variation is reviewed for A. thaliana, as are the genetics of the closely related A. lyrata and of the genus Capsella. Self incompatibility is widespread in the Brassicaceae, and this subject is reviewed. Interest arising from both the commercial value of crop species of the Brassicaceae and the importance of Arabidopsis thaliana as a model species, has led to the development of numerous resources to support research. These are reviewed, including germplasm and genomic library resources, and resources for reverse genetics, metabolomics, bioinformatics and transformation. Molecular studies of the genomes of species of the Brassicaceae revealed extensive genome duplication, indicative of multiple polyploidy events during evolution. In some species, such as Brassica napus, there is evidence of multiple rounds of polyploidy during its relatively recent evolution, thus the Brassicaceae represent an excellent model system for the study of the impacts of polyploidy and the subsequent process of diploidisation, whereby the genome stabilises. Sequence-level characterization of the genomes of Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica rapa are presented, along with summaries of comparative studies conducted at both linkage map and sequence level, and analysis of the structural and functional evolution of resynthesised polyploids, along with a description of the phylogeny and karyotype evolution of the Brassicaceae. Finally, some perspectives of the editors are presented. These focus upon the Brassicaceae species as models for studying genome evolution following polyploidy, the impact of advances in genome sequencing technology, prospects for future transcriptome analysis and upcoming model systems.

Book excerpt: The International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), established in 1962, is an intergovernmental organization of four teen countries: Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and Yugoslavia. Four institutes (Bari, Italy; Chania, Greece; Montpellier, France and Zaragoza, Spain) provide post-graduate education at the Master of Science level. CIHEAM promotes research networks on Mediterranean agricultural priorities, supports the organization of specialized education in member countries, holds seminars and workshops bringing together technologists and scientists involved in Mediterranean agriculture and regularly produces diverse publications including the series 'Options Mediterraneennes'. Through these activities, CIHEAM promotes North/South dialogue and international co-operation for agricultural development in the Mediterranean region. Plant breeding is, since 1982, one of the fields in which CIHEAM is con ducting a programme of training and promotion of research, through its Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza. The programme includes a one-year advanced specialization course, a series of two-week courses for professionals, and support for collaborative research activities in Mediterranean-relevant species. Many of these activities are organized in col laboration with national and international institutions. The publication in 1993 of Plant Breeding. Principles and Prospects, which ini tiated the Chapman & Hall's Plant Breeding Series, has become an important feature of CIHEAM's plant breeding programme. We are now pleased to add a further volume to that series: the present book, Statistical Methods for Plant Variety Evaluation.

Book The Brassica napus Genome

Download or read book The Brassica napus Genome written by Shengyi Liu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how the genome sequence contributes to our understanding of allopolyploidisation and the genome evolution, genetic diversity, complex trait regulation and knowledge-based breeding of this important crop. Numerous examples demonstrate how widespread homoeologous genome rearrangements and exchanges have moulded structural genome diversity following a severe polyploidy bottleneck. The allopolyploid crop species Brassica napus has the most highly duplicated plant genome to be assembled to date, with the largest number of annotated genes. Examples are provided for use of the genome sequence to identify and capture diversity for important agronomic traits, including seed quality and disease resistance. The increased potential for detailed gene discovery using high-density genetic mapping, quantitative genetics and transcriptomic analyses is described in the context of genome availability and illustrated with recent examples. Intimate knowledge of the highly-duplicated gene space, on the one hand, and the repeat landscape on the other, particularly in comparison to the two diploid progenitor genomes, provide a fundamental basis for new insights into the regulatory mechanisms that are coupled with selection for polyploid success and crop evolution.
