Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday to Janice Joplin and Michael Jackson, Columbia Records has discovered and nurtured a mind-boggling spectrum of talents and temperaments over the past 100-plus years. Now, with unprecedented access to the company's archives, this book tells the stories behind the groundbreaking music. More often than not, the music was not just created by the artists themselves but forged out of conflict with the men and women who handled them--executives, producers, Artists and Repertoire men, arrangers, recording engineers, and, yes, even publicists. And at almost every narrative crossroads is an undercurrent of racial tension--a tension that not only influenced twentieth-century music, but also mirrored and at times prompted major changes in American culture.--Résumé de l'éditeur.

New York has been a hotbed of innovation since its founding. Made in New York tells the stories behind the innovators and their inventions. Like many New Yorkers, some came from elsewhere to find success in their new home. Some became famous; others struggled for recognition. All were visionaries and risk-takers who were willing to put their lives on the line if necessary. From the first brassiere to the life-saving pacemaker, and from a solar lantern to the first mass-produced cameras, New York has been the seedbed of life-changing technologies that have altered how we live. Made in New York celebrates these compelling stories.

Book Documents of American Indian Diplomacy

Download or read book Documents of American Indian Diplomacy written by Vine Deloria and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 1579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproduced in this two-volume set are hundreds of treaties and agreements made by Indian nations--with, among others, the Continental Congress; England, Spain, and other foreign countries; the ephemeral Republic of Texas and the Confederate States; railroad companies seeking rights-of-way across Indian land; and other Indian nations. Many were made with the United States but either remained unratified by Congress or were rejected by the Indians themselves after the Senate amended them unacceptably. Many others are "agreements" made after the official--but hardly de facto--end of U.S. treaty making in 1871. With the help of chapter introductions that concisely set each type of treaty in its historical and political context, these documents effectively trace the evolution of American Indian diplomacy in the United States.
