This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colony and Extra-Institutional Care for the Feebleminded Two years later we established a second colony - the Bailey Farm Colony, which also accommodates twenty boys and a farmer and wife. This was originally a farm of only fifteen acres, lying between the asylum farm and the first farm colony, but we divided the acreage of the Brush Farm with it, giving one hundred acres to each. In 1910 another outlying farm, five miles from the asylum, was rented for a year to be used for raising fodder and pasturage and for stabling our large herd of young stock. We have not, by the way, purchased a cow in twelve years, but have grown from our best calves the 160 cows we now have. Book Feeble minded in Our Midst

Download or read book Feeble minded in Our Midst written by Steven Noll and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Noll traces the history and development of institutions for the mentally handicapped in the South between 1900 and 1940. He examines the influences of gender, race, and class in the institutionalization process and relates policies in the South to those in the North and Midwest, regions that had established similar institutions much earlier. In addition, Noll creates a vivid portrait of life and work within institutions and the impact of institutionalization on patients and their families. At the center of the story is the debate between the humanitarians, who advocated institutionalization as a way of protecting and ministering to the mentally deficient, and public policy adherents, who were primarily interested in controlling and isolating perceived deviants. According to Noll, these conflicting ideologies meant that most southern institutions were founded without a clear mission or an understanding of their relationship to southern society at large.

Book Domestic Colonies

Download or read book Domestic Colonies written by Barbara Arneil and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern colonization is generally defined as a process by which a state settles and dominates a foreign land and people. This book argues that through the nineteenth and into the first half of the twentieth centuries, thousands of domestic colonies were proposed and/or created by governments and civil society organizations for fellow citizens as opposed to foreigners and within their own borders rather than overseas. Such colonies sought to solve every social problem arising within industrializing and urbanizing states. Domestic Colonies argues that colonization ought to be seen during this period as a domestic policy designed to solve social problems at home as well as foreign policy designed to expand imperial power. Three kind of domestic colonies are analysed in this book: labour colonies for the idle poor, farm colonies for the mentally ill and disabled, and utopian colonies for racial, religious, and political minorities. All of them were justified by an ideology of colonialism that argued if people were segregated in colonies located on empty land and engaged in agrarian labour, this would improve both the people and the land. Key domestic colonialists analysed in this book include Alexis de Tocqueville, Abraham Lincoln, Peter Kropotkin, Robert Owen, and Booker T. Washington. The turn inward to colony thus requires us to rethink the meaning and scope of colonization and colonialism in modern political theory and practice.
