Excerpt: ... vince, by the provision mude for granting c free passage to unemployed labourers desirous of emigrating; and therefore, for the first time in the history of colonisation, there will be a newlyplanted colony, not languishing for years amidst difficulty and disaster, but springing at once into rapid prosperity. The Reviewer has read Ricardo, without being able to understand him. All the land in the new colony is to be sold at a fixed and uniform p: 'ice; and all the proceeds of the sale are to be t.pplied to providing a free passage for labourers willing to emigrate. The Reviewer states, and states truly, that, according to this scheme, "the settlers are to be compen"sated for the heavy price exacted for the land, "by the faithful application of the proceeds to "the sole purpose of conveying selected labourers "from England." The capitalist will not buy land alone. In the price of the land will be included the price of the passage of an abundant supply of labour for cultivating it in the most productive manner. But the Reviewer contends., that the compensation of an abundant supply of labour cannot be given to the capitalist, except at the expense of the labourer, "What," he asks, "does abundant labour mean with the "schemers? Why, if it have any meaning a, all, "it means cheap labour; that is, labour depreciated "by its being disproportioned to capital. If this "be so, and it cannot be otherwise, the condition "of the labourer is necessarily to be worse than "in the neighbouring colonies; he 13 neither to "have the same means, nor the same inducementi M to improve his condition." On reading this passage, you will perceive, fust, that the Reviewer does not know the meaning of the word " abundance;" and secondly, that he is a dabbler in...

Book The History of Australian Discovery and Colonisation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Australian Discovery and Colonisation Classic Reprint written by Samuel Bennett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Australian Discovery and Colonisation The intention of the writer of these outlines of the history of Australian discovery, settlement, and progress, is not to. Give a history of every voyage for Australian discovery, or a detail of every thing which has taken place in the progress of Australian colonisation, but to convey in a popular form such a general knowledge of the discovery and settlement of his, country as every Australian youth ought to possess; and to enable teachers to place before their pupils interesting and instructive lessons in a branch of education which has been hitherto almost, if not entirely, neglected. In order to sim plify and condense as much as possible the matter contained in the following chapters, the writer has thought it best not to encumber the text with authorities, references, and notes. Personal anecdotes, and matters of merely individual or private interest, have been introduced or alluded to very sparingly, and only in cases where they were considered necessary to illustrate or explain the condition of society, or to afford an insight into the characters of public men, public movements, or political changes.
