Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Training and the Business Man For almost three hundred years the American college has been seeking to serve the higher interests of American life. It has been, and still is, supposed to bear a special relation of preparation for what are known as the "learned professions." Banking, transportation, insurance represent three great labors to which men in increasing numbers and of greater power have in recent years been giving themselves. The purpose of the following pages is to present the advantage which these three vocations, which no one calls "learned," and which the work of general administration, may receive from the college. The purpose is in a way narrow; but I venture to hope that in trying to gain it I have succeeded in illustrating some advantages which the college may give to man as man. For, the great human worth of the college is incomparably superior to its worth in training efficient administrators. Book The Higher Education as a Training for Business Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Higher Education as a Training for Business Classic Reprint written by Harry Pratt Judson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Education as a Training for Business Few facts in education are more striking of late years than the growth in attendance at colleges and universities. The rate of this growth considerably exceeds that of the population of the country as a whole. A concomitant fact 15 the comparatively small number of college students who are seeking the learned professions. The great mass of the young men in college after graduation will be connected with some form of business. There are those who think that the present situation is a mistake; that young men are wasting their time, so far as a business career is concerned, by spending years in obtaining a college course. Is this a correct View of the situation? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Businessman Looks at Education What really happened to you before you were old enough to attend school? When you were learning your three R's? After you began to earn your own living? During each of these periods you were the same person. In each phase, you tried to grow up as best you could. Sometimes you had a free choice in deciding what to do. Other times you had to go along no matter what you thought or felt. What did this mean to you? Did you have a real chance to develop the best that was in you? Before school? In school? While earning your own living? Did you depend most upon any single ability of yours to come through each period? Perhaps you are now a parent with children about to enter school or already in school. Your own school days may strongly influence the kind of education you want your child to have. You may re member gratefully certain understanding teachers who helped you get through the tough periods. The methods used by other teachers may now seem old-fashioned to you. Or perhaps you feel that modern methods have gone too far. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Business Training and the Methods and Machinery of Business: A Complete d104-Book for Students London Selling Wool Brokers. The section relating to Customs and Excise has been revised by a competent hand while the numerous forms explaining the importation and exportation of goods have all been filled in by the chief shipping clerk of a leading firm of whole sale Grocers. For my facts relating to the Docks and much other information, I am indebted to Mr. A. H. W. Owen of the General Manager's Staff, Port of London Authority, a highly successful Commercial teacher at East Ham Technical College. The facts of Commercial Law interspersed throughout the book are taken, by permission of the Publishers, from Mr. Disney's Elements of Commercial Law, but should any misstatement be discovered in this connection the responsibility is mine. Mr. T. E. Young, b.a., late President of the Institute of Actuaries, has kindly read the section dealing with Life Assurance, and has also supplied the novel mathematical examples explaining the rudiments of actuarial work. I am also further indebted to Mr. Young and his Publishers for permission to use that luminous work, A Plain Guide to Investment and Finance, which ought to be in the hands of every Commercial teacher and business man throughout the country. The heavy drafts I have made from this book are frequently in the learned and sagacious author's own words. In the preparation of the section dealing with the Foreign Exchanges I have had the assistance of a foreign Bill Broker; and in that ion the Stock Exchange of a Stock Broker. The facts relating to Marine Insurance and General Average are, by permission, taken from Mr. Frederick Templcman's well-known and valuable book Marine Insurance: Its Principles and Practice while those relating to Fire and Miscellaneous Insurance have been ki communicated by a high official in one of our best-known offices. Students are reminded that although for convenience of refer ence the Postal Information is placed as an appendix yet it is an integral and highly important part of the book. Its various sections should be committed to memory, at those point reference is made to them in the body of the work. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Guide Through the Theoretical Department of Eastman National Business College, 1866 IN this day and age, amid the light of the Nineteenth Cen tury, it is beginning to be understood that a man to succeed, become eminent or a leader in his business or profession, must be practically educated. The good sense that is now pervading the minds of the American people on this subject, is evinced by the unprecedented patronage this College is enjoying from every section of the country, from Maine to California. This Institution is not simply a school for the Merchant, but the Course is so arranged as to be of incalculable advantage to all classes of the community - the Farmer as well as the Mer chant, the Lawyer as well as the Banker. The science OF accounts, which should enter largely into every man's educa tion, and be taught in every male and female school, forms an important and interesting part of the course of study here. This great system of Business Training, combining theory and practice, by means of certain Counting Room, Banking and Office Arrangements and Operations, which has contributed to such an extent in giving this College its wide-spread reputa tion, has now been secured to me by law, as Author, Discoverer, and Proprietor, through Letters Patent of the United States, bearing date September Sixth, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty-four; and no other School or College is permitted to use it, or any part of it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Learning in America: A Memorandum on the Conduct of Universities by Business Men But fortuitous circumstances again intervened, such as made it seem the part of insight and sobriety again to defer publication, until the colour of an irrelevant per sonal equation Should again have had time to fade into the background. With the further passage of time, it is hoped that no fortuitous shadow will now cloud the issue in any such degree as to detract at all sensibly from what ever value this account oi events and their causes may have. This allusion to incidents which have no material bear ing on the inquiry may tolerantly be allowed, as going to account for a sparing use of local information and, it is hoped, to extenuate a degree of reserve and reticence touching divers intimate details of executive policy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a college education become so vital to American notions of professional and personal advancement? Reared on the ideal of the self-made man, American men had long rejected the need for college. But in the early twentieth century this ideal began to change as white men born in the U.S. faced a barrage of new challenges, among them a stultifying bureaucracy and growing competition in the workplace from an influx of immigrants and women. At this point a college education appealed to young men as an attractive avenue to success in a dawning corporate age. Accessible at first almost exclusively to middle-class white males, college funneled these aspiring elites toward a more comfortable and certain future in a revamped construction of the American dream. In Creating the College Man Daniel A. Clark argues that the dominant mass media of the era—popular magazines such as Cosmopolitan and the Saturday Evening Post—played an integral role in shaping the immediate and long-term goals of this select group of men. In editorials, articles, fiction, and advertising, magazines depicted the college man as simultaneously cultured and scientific, genteel and athletic, polished and tough. Such depictions underscored the college experience in powerful and attractive ways that neatly united the incongruous strains of American manhood and linked a college education to corporate success.
