Book Critical and Miscellaneous Essays Vol 1 of 7

Download or read book Critical and Miscellaneous Essays Vol 1 of 7 written by Thomas Carlyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 of 7: Collected and Republished; First Time, 1839; Final, 1869 Except by name, Jean Paul Friedrich Richter is little known out of Germany. The only thing connected with him, we think, that has reached this country, is his saying, imported by Ma dame de Stael, and thankfully pocketed by most newspaper critics Providence has given to the French the empire of the land, to the English that of the sea, to the Germans that of - the air!' Of this last element, indeed, his own genius might easily seem to have been a denizen; so fantastic, many coloured, far-grasping, everyway perplexed and extraordinary is his mode of writing. To translate him properly is next to impossible; nay, a dictionary Of his works has actually been in part published for the use of German readers These things have restricted his sphere Of action, and may long restrict it, to his own country: but there, in return, he is a favourite of the first class studied through all his intricacies with trustful ad miration, and a love which tolerates much. During the last forty years, he has been continually before the public, in various capacities, and growing generally in esteem with all ranks of critics till, at length, his gainsayers have either been silenced or convinced; and Jean Paul, at first reckoned half-mad, has long ago vindicated his singularities to nearly universal satis faction, and now combines popularity with real depth of endow ment, in perhaps a greater degree than any other writer; being second in the latter point to scarcely more than one of his con temporaries, and in the former second to none. Excerpt: ... viii remarks on spencer'S definition of mind as correspondence1 1878 As a rule it may be said that, at a time when readers are so overwhelmed with work as they are at the present day, all purely critical and destructive writing ought to be reprobated. The half-gods generally refuse to go, in spite of the ablest criticism, until the gods actually have arrived; but then, too, criticism is hardly needed. But there are cases in which every rule may be broken. "What!" exclaimed Voltaire, when accused of offering no substitute for the Christianity he attacked, "je vou s dilivre d'une bete feroce, et voUs me demandez par quoi je la remplace!" Without comparing Mr. Spencer's definition of Mind either to Christianity or to a "bete feroce" it may certainly be said to be very far-reaching in its consequences, and, accord ' Reprinted from Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1878, 12, 1-18. The central Idea of this essay is the teleological character of mind. This idea may be said to be the germinal idea of James's psychology, epistemology, and philosophy of religion. Cf. Will to Believe, p. 117 ("Reflex Action and Theism"), where this essay is referred to, with the remark that "the conceiving or theorizing faculty... functions exclusively for the sake of ends that... are set by our emotional and practical subjectivity." The defects of the formula are so glaring that I am surprised it should not long ago have been critically overhauled. The reader will readily

Book The Victorian Frame of Mind 1830 1870

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ôIt is now forty years,ö Walter Houghton writes, ôsince Lytton Strachey decided that we knew too much about the Victorian era to view its culture as a whole.öá Recently the tide has turned and the Victorians have been the subject of sympathetic ôperiod pieces,ö critical and biographical works, and extensive studies of their age, but the Victorian mind itself remains blurred for usùa bundle of various and often paradoxical ideas and attitudes.á Mr. Houghton explores these ideas and attitudes, studies their interrelationships, and traces their simultaneous existence to the general character of the age.á His inquiry is the more important because it demonstrates that to look into the Victorian mind is to see some of the primary sources of the modern mind.
