St. Norbert destined his followers for the work of preaching to the poor, and his design was to mould them for that ministry by the practice of strict conventual life. He gave them the rule of the Austin canons with some slight modifications; for example, he desired that the superior should always receive the abbatial dignity, whereas with the Augustinians, although some of the greater houses were ruled by an abbot, in most instances the superior was only a prior.
