Throughout the thirteen chapters authors address key questions concerning how collaboration can be improved by using DUIs, including: in which situations a DUI is suitable to ease the collaboration among users; how usability standards can be used to evaluate the usability of systems based on DUIs; and accurately describe case studies and prototypes implementing these concerns. Under a collaborative scenario, users sharing common goals may take advantage of DUI environments to carry out their tasks more successfully because DUIs provide a shared environment where the users are allowed to manipulate information in the same space and at the same time. Under this hypothesis, collaborative DUI scenarios open new challenges to usability evaluation techniques and methods. This book explores the global revolution in human interconnectedness. It will discuss the various collaborative workgroups and their use in technology. The initiative focuses on processes of coordination and cooperation among autonomous units in human systems, in computer and communication systems, and in hybrid organizations of both systems. This initiative is motivated by three scientific issues which have been the focus of separate research efforts, but which may benefit from collaborative research. The first is the effort to discover the principles underlying how people collaborate and coordinate work efficiently and productively in environments characterized by a high degree of decentralized computation and decision making. The second is to gain a better fundamental understanding of the structure and outputs of organizations, industries, and markets which incorporate sophisticated, decentralized information and communications technology as an important component of their operations. The third is to understand problems of coordination in decentralized or open computer systems.

Extreme C2 is a concept that applies elements of the eXtreme Programming (XP) concept. This collaborative development technique can increase the adaptability and quality of software, something of high value in the complex domain of enterprise software. When fused with net-centric concepts, Automated Battle Management Aids (ABMAs) and new human interface techniques, the application of this concept to C2 should be able to produce similar benefits for planning in military operations, particularly complex, multifaceted operations. This concept will be demonstrated through the use of a multi-touch, multi-user interface screen built on top of net centric services. The paper will provide the results of a case study from a SPAWAR Charleston experiment about Operationalizing FORCEnet. We will evaluate the impact of Extreme C2 with Multi-Touch Multi-User (MTMU) technology on metrics like agility and speed of decision.
