Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic tales lie in the shadows throughout Cole County, notably in the vicinity of Russellville, Lohman and Stringtown. Pioneers such as Enoch Enloe found a home near Russellville following a broken wagon wheel while making the journey west in the 1830s. Stringtown has become a forgotten town that was once home to a self-proclaimed doctor who was brutally murdered. Millbrook claims business-minded visionaries such as John Scheperle Sr., who helped establish the legendary Centennial Mill. A few miles north in Lohman, the railroad became the impetus for growth and ushered in a period of relative prosperity. Historian and author Jeremy P. Ämick uncovers many fascinating tales passed down through the years.

By 1843, thirty-seven of them banded together to establish the first Lutheran church in the county--Zion Church. The following year, the second Lutheran church was founded near Taos, while the pastors at Zion helped establish a third congregation in Lohman in the 1850s. Doctrinal disputes inspired members to leave the church in Lohman and establish a new Lutheran congregation in Stringtown after the Civil War. Over the generations, Zion--the "Mother Church"--disbanded but other Lutheran congregations developed in Centertown, Honey Creek, Russellville, Jefferson City and near Brazito. Local author Jeremy Amick details the rich history of Lutherans in Cole County.

The Missouri National Guard's Company L, 2nd Infantry mobilized in support of the Mexican Border War in 1916 and later federalized for deployment during the Great War. Local youth scrambled to recruiting stations for a chance to join in the fray against Germany and Japan during World War II. It is clear that the Jefferson City community has a history of embracing the groundswell of patriotic pride that emerges in support of those who chose to fight--and sometimes lay down their lives--for a cause they view as greater than themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War is devastating. The Civil War in Cass County was hell on earth. On the shared border between Kansas and Missouri the sayings "brother against brother," "father against son" and "neighbor against neighbor" must have certainly originated here. It was not only spoken--it was lived. From the Border War, which began five years BEFORE the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter, to the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, fear was an everyday companion to the people who lived in this rural Missouri county. This is the story of one family who met each new day with the fear of being robbed, beaten or murdered. Even with Federal "protection papers" to prove him as a Union man, Robert Allison Brown, whose home was better-known as Wayside Rest where many a weary traveler was given a meal and a bed, was set upon nearly a dozen times. His family was terrorized, property stolen and buildings burned. Through the eyes of his fourteen-year-old daughter, Lizzie, you, too, can experience how Cass County became known as "The Burnt District" during those turbulent Civil War years.

Book Guerrilla Warfare in Civil War Missouri Volume III January August 1864

Download or read book Guerrilla Warfare in Civil War Missouri Volume III January August 1864 written by Bruce Nichols and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a thorough study of all known guerrilla operations in Civil War Missouri from January through August 1864. It explores the various tactics each side used to try to gain advantage, with regional differences affected by the differing personalities of commanders. The author utilizes both well-known and obscure sources (military and government records, private accounts, county and other local histories, period and later newspapers, and secondary sources published after the war) to identify which Southern partisan leaders and groups operated in which areas of Missouri, and describe how they operated and how their kinds of warfare evolved. This work presents the actions of Southern guerrilla forces and Confederate behind-Union-lines recruiters chronologically by region to reveal the relationship of seemingly isolated events to other events. The book also studies the counteractions of an array of different types of Union troops to show how differences in training, leadership and experience affected actions in the field.
