Book Coherent Laser Beam Combining

Download or read book Coherent Laser Beam Combining written by Arnaud Brignon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser beam combining techniques allow increasing the power of lasers far beyond what it is possible to obtain from a single conventional laser. One step further, coherent beam combining (CBC) also helps to maintain the very unique properties of the laser emission with respect to its spectral and spatial properties. Such lasers are of major interest for many applications, including industrial, environmental, defense, and scientific applications. Recently, significant progress has beenmade in coherent beam combining lasers, with a total output power of 100 kW already achieved. Scaling analysis indicates that further increase of output power with excellent beam quality is feasible by using existing state-of-the-art lasers. Thus, the knowledge of coherent beam combining techniques will become crucial for the design of next-generation highpower lasers. The purpose of this book is to present the more recent concepts of coherent beam combining by world leader teams in the field.

Book excerpt: Advances in High-Power Fiber and Diode Laser Engineering provides an overview of recent research trends in fiber and diode lasers and laser systems engineering. In recent years, many new fiber designs and fiber laser system strategies have emerged, targeting the mitigation of different problems which occur when standard optical fibers are used for making high-power lasers. Simultaneously, a lot of attention has been put to increasing the brightness and the output power of laser diodes. Both of these major laser development directions continue to advance at a rapid pace with the sole purpose of achieving higher power while having excellent beam quality. The book begins by introducing the principles of diode lasers and methods for improving their brightness. Later chapters cover quantum cascade lasers, diode pumped high power lasers, high average power LMA fiber amplifiers, high-power fiber lasers, beam combinable kilowatt all-fiber amplifiers, and applications of 2 μm thulium fiber lasers and high-power GHz linewidth diode lasers. Written by a team of authors with experience in academia and industrial research and development, and brought together by an expert editor, this book will be of use to anyone interested in laser systems development at the laboratory or commercial scale.

Book Laser Beam Combining Methods

Download or read book Laser Beam Combining Methods written by R. Andrew Motes and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several reasons why combining laser beams makes sense: (1) some lasers, such as fiber lasers, have good beam quality but limited output power, (2) it allows for graceful degradation, (3) it makes the overall system more modular, and (4) it distributes the cooling load. This book summarizes and describes all the known methods for combining laser beams from low-power lasers into one high-power beam on target.

Book Incoherent Combining of High Power Fibers Lasers for Long Range Directed Energy Applications

Download or read book Incoherent Combining of High Power Fibers Lasers for Long Range Directed Energy Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a configuration for incoherently combining fiber lasers, which can be used for long-range directed energy applications. Unlike coherent beam combining approaches, incoherent combining does not require phase loclcing, the polarization of the lasers can be random, and the linewidths can be large. These relazed requirements allow for the use of recently developed high-power (>2 kW/fiber), single mode, high quality (M2 1.2) fiber lasers having relatively large linewidths (1%). These high-power lasers cannot be used for coherent beam combining. The proposed incoherent combining configuration consists ofafiberlaser array in which the beams dilfractto aspot size of-4cm onto individual collimating lenses. The collimated beams can be directed to a target many kilometers away by individual steering mirrors, which form the beam director. We present parameters for an incoherently combined laser system that can deliver 100 kW of CW power on a target area of 100 cm2 at a range of 5 km. The system has 49 fiber lasers and a beam director with transverse dimension 60 cm x 60 cm. This configuration is readily scalable to higher powers.

Book Multi segment Coherent Beam Combining

Download or read book Multi segment Coherent Beam Combining written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scaling laser systems to large sizes for power beaming and other applications can sometimes be simplified by combing a number of smaller lasers. However, to fully utilize this scaling, coherent beam combination is necessary. This requires measuring and controlling each beam's pointing and phase relative to adjacent beams using an adaptive optical system. We have built a sub-scale brass-board to evaluate various methods for beam-combining. It includes a segmented adaptive optic and several different specialized wavefront sensors that are fabricated using diffractive optics methods. We have evaluated a number of different phasing algorithms, including hierarchical and matrix methods, and have demonstrated phasing of several elements. The system is currently extended to a large number of segments to evaluate various scaling methodologies.

Book A Nonlinear Optical Method for Combining High Power Laser Beams in Gases Or Plasmas

Download or read book A Nonlinear Optical Method for Combining High Power Laser Beams in Gases Or Plasmas written by Jay S. Chivian and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose is to investigate concepts for laser controlled optics via near resonance nonlinear dispersion, so that a laser induced index grating which is capable of high power laser beam combining might be produced and demonstrated. The principle of coherent addition of several input laser beams into one output beam had been demonstrated by the use of binary phase gratings. Properly shaped phase gratings had been etched onto a solid surface, establishing that multiple laser beams can be combined into a single beam with good conversion efficiency. For high power beams, the limited damage thresholds and maximum permissible thermal loading of solid state devices encouraged a search for more satisfactory working media. Gases and plasmas appeared to offer better solutions as working media. It had been predicted that two laser fields of differing wavelengths interacting with a collision-dominated atomic or molecular system with three effective energy levels could influence one another in a nonreciprocal manner; the creation of and interaction with a grating via near-resonance nonlinear dispersion thus should provide a method for low power laser beams to create a grating in which other beams combined to form a high power beam. Book A Practical Guide to Handling Laser Diode Beams

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Handling Laser Diode Beams written by Haiyin Sun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the reader a practical guide to the control and characterization of laser diode beams. Laser diodes are the most widely used lasers, accounting for 50% of the global laser market. Correct handling of laser diode beams is the key to the successful use of laser diodes, and this requires an in-depth understanding of their unique properties. Following a short introduction to the working principles of laser diodes, the book describes the basics of laser diode beams and beam propagation, including Zemax modeling of a Gaussian beam propagating through a lens. The core of the book is concerned with laser diode beam manipulations: collimating and focusing, circularization and astigmatism correction, coupling into a single mode optical fiber, diffractive optics and beam shaping, and manipulation of multi transverse mode beams. The final chapter of the book covers beam characterization methods, describing the measurement of spatial and spectral properties, including wavelength and linewidth measurement techniques. The book is a significantly revised and expanded version of the title Laser Diode Beam Basics, Manipulations and Characterizations by the same author. New topics introduced in this volume include: laser diode types and working principles, non-paraxial Gaussian beam, Zemax modeling, numerical analysis of a laser diode beam, spectral property characterization methods, and power and energy characterization techniques. The book approaches the subject in a practical way with mathematical content kept to the minimum level required, making the book a convenient reference for laser diode users.
