Book Our Man in Panama

Download or read book Our Man in Panama written by John Dinges and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “carefully researched” account of the rise and fall of notorious dictator Manuel Noriega—and America’s role in both (The Washington Post). Written by a prize-winning NPR veteran who spent years covering Latin America, this blend of biography, history, and political reporting details the events that lead to the American invasion of Panama. “Describes in considerable detail the fascinating and appalling relationship between Noriega and the U.S. government. Much of this material was derived from previously classified documents, supplemented by Congressional hearings and interviews. [John] Dinges has taken great care to verify his sources; hearsay, gossip, and questionable testimony is not presented here . . . Highly recommended.” —Library Journal “Most of the action takes place in Panama, of course, but it is still very much a Washington story. Few of the characters, from President Bush on down, emerge with dignity intact.” —The New York Times “One of the best analyses of American foreign policy failures in Panama.” —The New Republic A New York Times Notable Book of the Year

  • Pages : 307 pages

Download or read book Panama chombo style written by Cuquita Arias de Calvo and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Penology from Panama to Cape Horn

Download or read book Penology from Panama to Cape Horn written by Negley K. Teeters and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and factual study of the penal systems of South America is the outgrowth of an extended tour made by the author in 1944. The countries visited include: Panama; Colombia, which has the most rational program of productive prison labor; Ecuador, where there is "no penal philosophy or prison system worthy of the name"; Peru; Bolivia, with "prisons and penal philosophy the most benighted of any country visited"; Chile, which maintains "the worst large city jail ever seen" in Santiago; Argentina, which with Brazil stands in the foreground as far as prison construction is concerned; and Brazil, where there is real leadership in both adult penology and child care. The author's observations and discussions with leading men in the field, his knowledge of the history behind the present penal cods and institutions, and his understanding of the social, economic, and biological factors leading to crime make this a very illuminating account. There are detailed descriptions of the extremes of good and bad penal administration that may exist even within the same city, the generally sordid treatment of women prisoners who are not cared for in church-operated institutions, and the almost universal system of housing dependent and neglected minors in the same institutions as delinquent children. This book will be of interest not only to those who have a special knowledge of the field but to those who have little previous experience with the subject. There are ten photographs of prisoners that are described in detail by the author and a line-map of the penal institutions of South America.

Book The Speech of the Negros Congos of Panama

Download or read book The Speech of the Negros Congos of Panama written by John M. Lipski and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1989 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The negros congos of Panama's Caribbean coast are a unique cultural manifestation of Afro-Hispanic contact. During Carnival season each year, this group reenacts dramatic events which affected black slaves in colonial Panama, performs dances and pantomimes, and enforces a set of ritual laws' and punishments'. A key component of congo games is a special dialect, the hablar en congos, which is employed by a subset of the congos in each settlement. The present study investigates the congo dialect from a linguistic point of view along two dimensions. The first involves deliberate phonetic, syntactic, and semantic distortion as part of the overall spirit of of burlesque and ridicule that surrounds Panamanian Carnival. The second is the retention of earlier, partially creolized Afro-Hispanic language forms which may still be extracted from contemporary congo speech. These Afro-Hispanic vestiges are of key importance to monogenetic theories of Afro-Romance creolization as Panamanian congo speech provides examples of unique creolized Spanish.

  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2014-04-23
  • ISBN : 0822376679
  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book Borderland on the Isthmus written by Michael E. Donoghue and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction, maintenance, and defense of the Panama Canal brought Panamanians, U.S. soldiers and civilians, West Indians, Asians, and Latin Americans into close, even intimate, contact. In this lively and provocative social history, Michael E. Donoghue positions the Panama Canal Zone as an imperial borderland where U.S. power, culture, and ideology were projected and contested. Highlighting race as both an overt and underlying force that shaped life in and beyond the Zone, Donoghue details how local traditions and colonial policies interacted and frequently clashed. Panamanians responded to U.S. occupation with proclamations, protests, and everyday forms of resistance and acquiescence. Although U.S. "Zonians" and military personnel stigmatized Panamanians as racial inferiors, they also sought them out for service labor, contraband, sexual pleasure, and marriage. The Canal Zone, he concludes, reproduced classic colonial hierarchies of race, national identity, and gender, establishing a model for other U.S. bases and imperial outposts around the globe.
