Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Carbonisation of Coal: A Scientific Review of the Formation, Composition and Destructive Distillation of Coal for Gas, Coke and by-Products The Cantor Lectures which I gave in the winter of 1911 at the Royal Society of Arts, on the Carbonisation of Coal, brought me so many letters of inquiry on various points connected with the subject that I thought it might be of interest to some at least of those engaged in carbonising work if I took the lectures as a basis for a short treatise on the subject, and I think the absence of any book dealing at all fully with the scientific side of carbonisation justifies the attempt. During the last forty years I have been interested in many fuel problems, and have had the good fortune during that period to assist at the birth of most of the new departures from the recognised rut of procedure, and also, I regret to say, have been a mourner at the funerals of many. Book The Analysis of Coal With Phenol as a Solvent Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Analysis of Coal With Phenol as a Solvent Classic Reprint written by S. W. Parr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis of Coal With Phenol as a Solvent I. Present 'methods of Coal Analysis. - There are two processes in vogue at the present time for the chemical examination of coal; one is the ultimate, and the other is the proximate method Of analysis. In the first the organic or combustible part Of the coal is separated into its elemental constituents, carbon, hydrogen, Oxygen, and nitrogen. The mineral or non-combustible portion is separately determined under two items as ash and moisture. In the proximate method the organic material is separated into two divisions, one being that portion which under high temperature and out Of Contact with the air passes Off in the gaseous form, and the other that part which remains behind as the non-volatile or coke-form ing carbon. Each procedure has doubtless come into use as the result Of a specific demand. For example, the engineer needed the data from which he could calculate the total heat of the coal and, in arriving at a heat balance, he must also have at hand any negative factors charge able to the fuel, such as the quantity and character of the gaseous products Of combustion. These items, therefore, would call for the data furnished by the ultimate methods of analysis. The proximate method was developed as a natural accompaniment of the gas and coke industries, since it furnished in either case an index of the yield which might be expected from a given coal. Formerly, also, the quantity Of volatile matter was made to serve as an index of the grade or quality of a coal. Thus the data from proximate analyses have been put into the form of fuel ratios or the ratio of the non-volatile to the volatile part of the coal, such ratios supposedly serving as an indication of the general class or type to which the coal belonged. Book The Primary Decomposition Products of Fractional Carbonization of Illinois Coal Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Primary Decomposition Products of Fractional Carbonization of Illinois Coal Classic Reprint written by Marvin James Pearce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primary Decomposition Products of Fractional Carbonization of Illinois Coal Later, Parr and Francis (2) used non-oxidizing atmospheres such as nitrogen and steam in order to eliminate variables due to oxidation. Goals heated in these inert media gave a residue which was smokeless and yet contained much of the volatile con stituents. While using an atmosphere of steam, it was noticed that the temperature rose very abruptly at approximately 315 C. This phenomena has later been developed into a new theory for the coking of coals by means of exothermic reactions and a careful control of temperatures. Book Boiler Chemistry and Feed Water Supplies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boiler Chemistry and Feed Water Supplies Classic Reprint written by James Hugh Paul and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boiler Chemistry and Feed Water Supplies Although the internal combustion engine may have a much extended future it does not at present compete with steam in large power plants. The steam boiler up to now is by no means a diminishing quantity, and any chemical knowledge which will increase its efficiency, preserve its life, and save coal deserves thought and consideration. Coal in the future is most likely to'be valued for its chemical products now destroyed in the furnace. Coal will have to be economized, and one way out of the difficulty will be to remove its valuable volatile products by distillation and use the residual cokes for steam-raising purposes. This may present difficulties at first, but these difficulties are not insuperable, and the same skill which has brought the furnace to its present state of perfection will be able to adapt it to the altered conditions. If it be more beneficial to the human race to utilize benzole for the manufacture of dyes and drugs than to burn it for raising steam, then the valuable benzole will be removed and the carbonaceous residues become the fuel of the future. Many of the chemical reactions herein described have been gathered from a long practical experience with high-pressure boilers working under varied-circumstances and conditions, and the analyses given in the text are original analyses made in the course of a somewhat extended practice. So far as possible, technical language and expressions have been avoided. The facts stated and the conclusions drawn have been described in the language of everyday life, so that those without more than a very limited acquaintance with chemistry may be able to understand and appreciate the results, and a chapter has been added explaining and illustra ting such technical expressions as it has been found necessary to use. Book excerpt: This massively updated and expanded fifth edition is the most complete, authoritative engineering treatment of the dehydration and gas purification processes used in industry today. Of great value to design and operations engineers, it gives practical process and equipment design descriptions, basic data, plant performance results, and other detailed information on gas purification processes and hardware. This latest edition incorporates all significant advances in the field since 1985.You will find major new chapters on the rapidly expanding technologies of nitrogen oxide control, with discussions of regulatory requirements and available processes; absorption in physical solvents, covering single component and mixed solvent systems; and membrane permeation, with emphasis on the gas purification applications of membrane units. In addition, new sections cover areas of strong current interest, particularly liquid hydrocarbon treating, Claus plant tail gas treating, thermal oxidation of volatile organic compounds, and sulfur scavenging processes. This volume brings you expanded coverage of alkanolamines for hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide removal, the removal and use of ammonia in gas purification, the use of alkaline salt solutions for acid gas removal, and the use of water to absorb gas impurities. The basic technologies and all significant advances in the following areas are thoroughly described: sulfur dioxide removal and recovery processes, processes for converting hydrogen sulfide to sulfur, liquid phase oxidation processes for hydrogen sulfide removal, the absorption of water vapor by dehydrating solutions, gas dehydration and purification by adsorption, and the catalytic and thermal conversion of gas impurities.
