Book excerpt: Feedback is considered an essential function of skill learning and yet previous research often reports findings without controlling for learners background information, skill level, and perceptions of instruction. This study investigated child to adolescent female athletes' perceptions of coach and parent feedback in response to good and poor soccer play, particularly in relation to skill level and age. Coaches assessed skill and athletes completed questionnaires measuring the perceived frequency of multiple types of feedback responses from coaches and parents including different forms of praise and criticism. 63 female club level soccer players, 10 to 17 years old and 4 head coaches participated in the study. Multivariate analysis revealed that coach's praise and criticism was positively correlated to age and athlete initiated communication with coaches was negatively correlated to age. No correlations were found between athletic skill level and perceived feedback. These correlations indicate that age may affect how learners form their perceptions of instruction.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The investigation was designed to analyze coaching behaviors and gender of athletes in reference to self-efficacy levels of youth soccer athletes. Youth soccer coaches (N = 7) were observed during three practice sessions using the Coaching Behavior Assessment System (CBAS; Smith, Smoll, & Hunt, 1977). A total of 31 female and 36 male youth soccer athletes, ages 7 to 13, completed the Perceived Soccer Competence Scale (PSCS; Feltz & Brown, 1984). No significant (p> .05) linear relationships were found between positive or negative subscales of the CBAS (Smith et al., 1977) with regard to scores of athletes on the PSCS (Feltz & Brown, 1984). Also, two 2 x 2 ANOVAs were conducted examining coach rank, for positive and negative behaviors, and gender to PSCS (Feltz & Brown, 1984) scores. Coaches were ranked based on the degree to which they utilized positive and negative feedback. No significant interactions or main effect differences were found for either of the 2 x 2 ANOVAs. The perceived soccer competence scores of athletes were similar despite playing for coaches who utilized either positive or negative feedback. Perceived soccer competence was similar for both males and females. In the future it is suggested that research in youth sport in the natural setting, examine efficacy of athletes who are repeatedly exposed to negative or positive coaching.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine athletes' sport-confidence and perceptions of coaching competence following a performance mistake in which the coach removes the athlete from the game or leaves the athlete in the game. A total of 68 participants, both males and females, from 18 to 24 years old, with at least one year of high school varsity basketball experience read a scenario in which they were either taken out of the game or left in the game after a mistake. Results indicated that being taken out of the game did not lower athletes' sport-confidence, nor did their confidence differ from those that remained in the game. Those taken out of the game did report lower perceptions of the coach's competence. Future research should focus on different types of sports, athletes who consistently encounter this situation, and the type of feedback given by their coach.
