Book excerpt: In this work, we investigate the clustering of faint quasars in the early Universe and use the clustering strength to gain a better understanding of quasar feedback mechanisms and the growth of central supermassive black holes at early times in the history of the Universe. It has long been understood (e.g., Hopkins et al. 2007a) that the clustering of distant quasars can be used as a probe of different feedback models; however, until now, there was no sample of faint, high-redshift quasars with sufficient density to accurately measure the clustering strength. Therefore we conducted a new survey to increase the number density of these objects. Here, we describe the Spitzer -IRAC Equatorial Survey (SpIES) which is a moderately deep, large-area Spitzer survey which was designed to discover faint, high-redshift (2.9 = z = 5.1) quasars. SpIES spans ~115 deg^2 in the equatorial "Stripe 82" region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and probes to 5-[sigma] depths of 6.13 [mu]-Jy (21.93 AB magnitude) and 5.75 [mu]-Jy (22.0 AB magnitude) at 3.6 and 4.5 microns. At these depths, SpIES is able to observe faint quasars, and we show that SpIES recovers ~94% of the high-redshift (z 3.5), spectroscopically-confirmed quasars that lie within its footprint. SpIES is also ideally located on Stripe 82 for two reasons: It surrounds existing infrared data from the Spitzer-HETDEX Exploratory Large-area (SHELA) survey which increases the area of infrared coverage, and there is a wide range of multi-wavelength, multi-epoch ancillary data on Stripe 82 which we can use together to select high-redshift quasar candidates. To photometrically identify quasar candidates, we combined the optical data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the infrared data from SpIES and SHELA and employed three machine learning algorithms. These algorithms were trained on the optical/infrared colors of known, high-redshift quasars. Book excerpt: (Cont.) In the second project, I investigate the evolution of cluster substructure with redshift, quantifying for the first time cluster structure out to z [approx.] 1. My sample includes 40 X-ray selected, luminous clusters from the Chandra archive, and I quantify cluster morphology using the power ratio method (Buote & Tsai 1995). I find that, as expected qualitatively from hierarchical models of structure formation, high-redshift clusters have more substructure and are dynamically more active than low-redshift clusters. Specifically, the clusters with z> 0.5 have significantly higher average third and fourth order power ratios than the lower redshift clusters. This observation of structure evolution indicates that dynamical state may be an important systematic effect in cluster studies seeking to constrain cosmology, and when calibrated against numerical simulations, structure evolution will itself provide interesting bounds on cosmological models.

Today the high-redshift galaxies have developed into one of the important topics of astrophysics, accounting for about 5–10% of the publications in the major scienti?c journals devoted to astronomy. Because high-redshift galaxies is a rapidly developing ?eld and since new results are published constantly, writing a book on this topic is challenging. On the other hand, in view of the large amount of individual results now in the literature, and in view of the still growing interest in this topic, it appears worthwhile to summarize and evaluate the available data and to provide an introduction for those who wish to enter this ?eld, or who, for various reasons, might be interested in its results. The end of the ?rst decade of the 21st century appears to be a good point in time to attempt such a summary. The current generation of ground-based 8 to 10-m - optical telescopes, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the most important large radio telescopes have by now been in operation since about one or two decades. In particular, the environments of galaxy clusters have been shown be very efficient at quenching star-formation and altering other observed galactic properties, although the specific mechanisms responsible for this evolution are not fully understood. Additionally, the effect that the cluster environment has on galaxies does not appear to be consistent at all redshifts, with high-redshift cluster galaxies having different observed properties compared to their local counterparts. In this thesis, two studies are presented that investigate the role of high-redshift galaxy cluster environments on their galactic populations.The first study is an extensive photometric survey of the supercluster RCS2319+00, a massive supercluster system comprising three virialized cluster cores in close proximity with one another in projected space as well as redshift space. The system is located at a redshift of z = 0.9 and is expected to merge into a single 10^15 solar mass cluster by z = 0.5, and is therefore a progenitor of the most massive cluster systems we see in the nearby universe today. Spectroscopic and submillimetre surveys have previously uncovered a complicated system of filamentary structure and infalling groups. To complement the previous studies, we assemble a large multiwavelength catalogue to identify cluster members based on photometric properties.With a photometric catalogue complete with photometric redshifts for over 16,000 objects across the central RCS2319 field, we compile a cluster catalogue of nearly 1,800 cluster members. Using proxies for both local and global environments, we investigate the mass and colour properties of cluster galaxies depending on their specific environments within the supercluster. While we do not find a strong dependence on global environment, we do recover both a mass-density and colour-density relation depending on the local overdensity suggesting that immediate surroundings influence galactic properties more strongly than the overall structure in which it resides.The second study presented investigates the presence of merging systems in high-redshift cluster environments compared to the field. Book excerpt: Massive galaxies and galaxy clusters gain much of their mass by merging with their neighbors; this hierarchical structure formation is the foundation of our understanding of galaxy evolution. Nevertheless, the detailed evolutionary processes needed to form the structures we see in the local Universe remain poorly understood. This thesis comprises four projects examining the growth of galaxies and clusters at high redshift by using radio, sub/millimeter, and X-ray observations to provide empirical constraints on their cosmic evolution. Chapter 2 presents deep 1.2mm imaging of the inner 20' x 20' of the Lockman Hole North (LHN) field to search for submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), rapidly star-forming, high-redshift galaxy mergers. We detect 41 SMGs with S/N>4.0 and use Monte Carlo simulations to estimate their number counts and angular clustering properties. Chapter 3 investigates the nuclear accretion properties of the LHN SMGs. In the sample's average rest-frame X-ray spectrum, we detect strong Fe K alpha emission (equivalent width EW>=1 keV) from highly-ionized Fe species -- evidence that beneath the galaxies' heavy obscuration, supermassive black holes may be growing rapidly. Chapter 4 describes a new 345 GHz and 2.1 GHz imaging campaign to study the intracluster media (ICM) of eleven massive Sunyaev Zel'dovich Effect (SZE)-detected clusters from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) southern survey. In six of eleven, 345 GHz SZE increments are detected and used to characterize the spatial distribution and energy content of the ICM at high (19.2") resolution. This work helps us understand how SZE-mass scaling relations are affected by contamination from other sources along the line of sight and by dynamical properties of the ICM. Chapter 5 studies the non-thermal radio emission in one exceptional z=0.870 binary cluster merger (ACTJ0102-4915, ``El Gordo'') with the help of newly-acquired radio observations. El Gordo is the highest-redshift cluster known to host double radio ``relics'' and a radio ``halo, '' and by characterizing the morphology, intensity, spectral index, and polarization of these structures, we extend our knowledge of ICM shocks and magnetic fields to an era when the Universe was only 50% its current age.

Book excerpt: As late as 1995, the anticipated widespread population of primeval galaxies remained at large, lurking undetected at unknown redshifts, with undiscovered properties. We present results from our efforts to detect and characterize primeval galaxies by their signature high-redshift Lyman-alpha emission lines utilizing two observational techniques: serendipitous slit spectroscopy and narrowband imaging. By pushing these techniques to their utmost limits, we probe the Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxy population out to redshifts as high as z = 6.5. Galaxies at this epoch reside in a universe which is just 800 million years old, a mere 6% of its current age. As such, this work provides one account of the manner by which observational cosmology has recently shifted from merely marveling at the incredible lookback times implied by the first few high-redshift detections, to the routine assembly of high-redshift datasets designed to address specific astrophysical issues.
