Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatology of Florida The President, Dr. Daniel, appointed me one of the essayists on this occasion, and I have selected as a subject for a few remarks, the Climatology of Florida, with United States and Continental comparisons. In treating this sub ject, I shall not aim at originality. In the language of Dr. Outs, of New York, I make the attempt to enlighten the public, more especially the medical public, on the subject of the Climate of Florida, its adaptability as a health resort, and especially to remove certain unfounded ideas and preja dices which have been wide spread and deeply rooted in Northern communities. It is somewhat surprising that this should be the case with medical men, since positive informa tion on the subject has always been accessible to them in the volumes of the Medical Statistics of the United States Army, the Army Medical Reports, and the Reports of the Adjutant General's Cmce. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documents and Proof of the Climate and Soil of Florida: Particularly East Florida There has been, in the six months of the session, not yet terminated, so little of interest, 'or of congratulation, that I might, with great propriety, have spared you the trouble of the recital of the causes which have prevented the consideration of any other topics, but those general ones of the deep and pervading interest which have agitated the whole country, from the meeting of Congress, to the present time. As, ' however, you had a right to expect that some subjects of importance to you should be acted upon, it is incumbent upon me to show that the failure to despatch them 'did not arise from any want of attention or negligence on my part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatological Data, Florida, Vol. 53: January 1949 The cold weather of the lst 2nd caused no damage to citrus. Beans, tomatoes, peppers and squash in Indian River, Lower East Coast and Everglades Districts suffered locally heavy losses, some fields being a total loss while in others the damage was slight. The cold was beneficial to hardier crops such as cabbage, celery, lettuce, etc. Overall losses were small due to low production at the between - season period. Open weather through the month permitted extensive land preparation and seeding for spring truck. Absence of precipitation was causing citrus leaves to curr and some fruit to drop in non-irrigated high land groves by the end of the month and irrigation was being practised generally by growers so equipped. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The East Coast of Florida: Its Climate, Soil and Products The western bank of the river consists of a series of forest covered hills forming what is called a high hammock. The soil is often made up of oyster shells with a layer of humus on top. This very fertile belt is seldom more than one-half a mile wide, and is succeeded by a lower belt that probabiy once was the bed of a river, but now, as a rule, bears yellow pines, while 1n some places savannas occur, shallow grass ponds containing a few inches of water during the rainy season, but dry most of the year. They are, however, too wet to produce trees. In the pine woods of this belt the soil is sandy, sometimes underlaid by a hard sandstone of a brown, iron rust color. Bushes of gallberries are growing among the pines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Rigby's Papers on Florida In bringing this book before the public, it has been my endeavor to give as brief a description of every portion of the State of Florida as would still give the reader a good, fair knowledge of the different Coun ties, Cities, Towns, etc. Having visited the State several years ago to recruit my health, and finding the climate so very delightful, I have since spent the greater part of eight years in traveling through the State, visiting every county, investigating its soil, products, etc., to my own satisfaction; and in a great many instances I have been over the ground several times during this period. A great deal of my travel has been in the saddle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
