Pour la première fois, la santé parodontale ainsi que la santé péri-implantaire ont été définies. De plus, une nouvelle classification multidimensionnelle des parodontites a été proposée. Cette nouvelle classification en stades et en grades permet une évaluation individuelle du patient. Elle permet de distinguer la gravité de la maladie (stade) et la sensibilité du patient à celle-ci (grade), et intègre le niveau de complexité dans la gestion à long terme de la fonction et de l'esthétique. Ce nouveau système de classification permet un diagnostic et une intervention thérapeutique plus précoces, et vise à améliorer la qualité globale du traitement parodontal. L'objectif de ce travail est de présenter synthétiquement ces résultats, d'une part théoriquement et d'autre part en appliquant l'ensemble de ces nouvelles données cliniquement.
