It includes every cinema which has opened in Hertfordshire since 1908 (when the first opened its doors) and is arranged by town for ease of reference.

In November 1946, the British Government founded the New Town of Stevenage, thirty miles north of London, as part of a long-term programme to move over a million people from the metropolis. This book tells the story of this New Town: the history of the decentralization policy, of the existing town of old Stevenage, and of the first four years of the new development; the sociology of the New Town plan and of the strong local opposition which aroused nation-wide interest and led to a court case that almost stopped the project; the nature of the Development Corporation established to plan and build the New Town and the difficulties experienced in its relations with other Government departments and the Stevenage District Council. The book is, therefore, an historical and sociological study of a pioneering Government venture and of its impact upon a small town. Using films such as The Return of Dracula, The Tingler, Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs, Color Me Blood Red, Bonnie and Clyde, and The Wild Bunch, Rødje takes a novel approach to film history by following one (audio)visual element through an exploration that traverses established standards for film production and reception. This study does not heed distinctions regarding to genres (horror, western, gangster) or models of film production (exploitation, independent, studio productions) but rather maps the operations of cinematic images across marginal as well as more traditionally esteemed cinematic territories. The result is a book that rethinks and reassembles cinematic practices as well as aesthetics, and as such invites new ways to investigate how cinematic images enter relations with other images as well as with audiences.
