But many churches are lead by those who volunteer to chair committees because there is a need, yet they have no leadership training to speak of. How can well-meaning but sometimes ill-prepared lay people guide the path of a church body? The secret lies in offering effective, practical training. Book Church Boards Leading with Excellence

Download or read book Church Boards Leading with Excellence written by Ted Hull and published by . This book was released on 2015-05 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church boards are often the scene of confusion, conflict, and chaos. What's the job of a board? What's the role of the pastor in relation to the board? Should there be an elder board "and" an administrative board? Ted Hull's use of illustrations and analogies bring these questions-and answers-into focus. Ted first looks at the foundation of governance, both from a biblical and historic perspective. Then he introduces Policy Governance(r), often referred to as the Carver model, and confronts questions regarding whether this secular model can work in the church, or if it should even be allowed. He even argues for why a church board may not want to use Policy Governance. When you're done reading, you'll never look at the role of a church board in the same way again. In fact, whether you're a member of your church board or the board of any charity, you'll find yourself reaching for this book more than once. "With wit and wisdom, Ted draws from his rich and practical experience in church life and organizational governance to assist churches in understanding and applying Policy Governance(r) consistently and correctly." -Daniel Hamil, Ed.D. Executive Director/CEO North American Baptist Conference "Ted Hull approaches the topic of church governance in an engaging style that has you laughing and nodding... Even if you tend to be a 'doubting Thomas, ' I urge you to suspend your doubts long enough to read and absorb the message of this book." -Jannice Moore President, The Governance Coach Ted Hull, President of Ted Hull Consulting, has been involved with churches and para-church organizations for over thirty years. He has a passion to serve churches and charities by facilitating the process of governance excellence through coaching boards and leaders in the course of change. "

Book The Fa ade of Excellence

Download or read book The Fa ade of Excellence written by John Dyer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crucial need to substitute true leadership for bad management practices such as Management By Objectives (MBO) and the use of fear is now well known and was often championed by Dr. W. Edwards Deming. While significant progress has been made, many organizations (especially outside of manufacturing) are either just getting started with their improvement efforts or they are faking their way forward (going through the motions), trying to imitate what they have read in books or have seen at conferences. The executives of these organizations might give permission for the tools of Lean and Six Sigma to be taught but many of them still refuse to look in a mirror and change their own leadership style. They have built a "façade of excellence" that crumbles quickly whenever a bit of chaos is introduced. Not being able to sustain improvements over the long term is one of the top complaints from improvement professionals. What ingredient is missing that prohibits changes to occur throughout the leadership ranks that might create a culture that embraces teamwork, collaboration and improvement? To start, what exactly do we mean by leadership? The common mistake is to try and put all effective leaders into the same box. Leadership actually has many dimensions and several definitions. This book explores four different styles of leadership that includes "The Crisis Leader," "The Idea Gathering Leader," "The Team Forming Leader," and "The Empowerment Leader." Each of the four styles is appropriate when given a certain set of circumstances (an organization in trouble needs a "Crisis Leader" for example). The goal is to shift the organization, including the leaders and all of the employees at every level, toward collaboration and empowerment. Why go through the pains to rebuild an organization’s culture and leaders? In the annual "IndustryWeek Magazine - Best Plants" competition, the companies that have made the transition to high performance, fully empowered teams ("The Empowerment Leader"), in general, demonstrate far better results than all other applicants (and they tend to win "Best Place to Work" awards as well). So, what is keeping organizational leaders, especially those in the middle of the organization chart, from adopting the "The Empowerment" leadership style? This book defines and helps the reader understand what this new normal of leadership consists of and: Explains the four different styles of leaders and how these are different than a typical "old style" manager. Indicates which style is appropriate given a certain set of circumstances and how a leader knows when it is time to migrate from one style to another. Illustrates what it means for an organization to shift from a "dictator" culture to one of collaboration and what steps can be taken to help this transformation. Explores the current definition of a "promotable manager" and how this differs from a new normal definition of an outstanding, effective "Empowerment" leader. Defines Mission, Vision, Strategy, and Values and how these four cultural principles fit into the leadership progression model. Shows how the culture within the organization will be different after the adoption of empowered teams and introduces the concept of "Enthusiastic Productivity."

Book Who Are You On The Church Board Breaking Status And Learning How To Serve

Download or read book Who Are You On The Church Board Breaking Status And Learning How To Serve written by Elias Do Amaral Viana and published by Clube de Autores. This book was released on 2024-04-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Are You on the Church Board? Breaking Status and Learning How to Serve Dear, Every time I serve, I lead! Simone Faria. I am Simone Faria, graduated in Literature, postgraduate five times in different spheres, as well as a master in Educational Sciences, Teacher, Secretary of Education, Councilor and Businesswoman. Currently, Businesswoman and Administrator at First Baptist Church in Farol de São Thomé. I recommend this beautiful book “Who are you on the Church Board?” The content of this is profound and brings a demystification of status and comfort about the title, reinforcing what we find in Mark 10:45: “For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom of many. As a businesswoman and church administrator, I know firsthand the challenges and opportunities that come with leading and serving in a religious context. About the book: Who Are You on the Church Board? is a work that resonates deeply with me for its practical and relevant approach to leadership and service in the church. Written by Elias do Amaral Viana, the book offers valuable insights into how we can break down barriers and learn to serve with excellence and humility. During the dynamic in which all board members had tape over their mouths and were taken to all church offices, the question Who are you on the Board? echoed in their minds. This experience provided a unique opportunity for reflection and introspection about their roles and responsibilities as leaders of the faith community. As they walked the halls of the church, observing different areas of the congregation, insights began to emerge. Some board members felt a sense of discomfort when they realized they were physically unable to speak, highlighting the importance of open communication and the ability to express ideas and concerns. Others were confronted with the reality of how their actions and decisions directly impacted the church s various activities and ministries. They saw firsthand the importance of harmonious teamwork and collaboration between different departments to the overall success of the faith community. For some, the experience served as a powerful reminder that leadership is not just about authority or position, but also about serving and supporting those in your care. They recognized the need for humility, compassion, and empathy in leading the church. At the end of the dynamic, each board member was challenged to reflect on their answer to the question: Who are you on the Board? and to consider how they could improve and strengthen their leadership role in the faith community. This shared experience helped unite the board in a common purpose and reinforce the commitment to serve God and the church in a meaningful and effective way. During the dynamics involving all members of the board, the church transformed into a mirror that reflected not only the physical structure, but also the internal dynamics and relationships that constituted it. As each leader walked through the offices, with tape symbolizing the restriction of verbal communication, a series of perceptions and reflections began to emerge, illuminating fundamental aspects of each person s role and responsibility in leading the church. The enforced silence brought to the surface a powerful awareness of the importance of effective communication and the ability to express ideas and concerns clearly and openly. It was evident that without the ability to communicate freely, leaders faced significant challenges in conveying visions, solving problems, and making collaborative decisions. The journey through the church provided a privileged view of the different areas and ministries that make up the life of the congregation. Leaders were able to witness firsthand how their actions and decisions reverberated throughout every corner of the faith community, impacting everything from the worship department to the Bible study group. For many, the experience was a call to responsibility and humility. They realized that leadership is not just about authority or position, but also about serving and supporting those in your care. They recognized the importance of putting themselves in others shoes, demonstrating empathy and understanding in their interactions with church members. At the end of the dynamic, while the tape was removed and verbal communication was restored, the leaders came together to share their insights and learnings. It was an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of their role on the board and consider how they could improve and strengthen their leadership in the faith community. Main points: Breaking Status: The book challenges the conventional idea of status and power in church leadership, encouraging a more humble and servant approach. Leadership Development: Provides practical strategies for developing leadership and management skills, especially relevant to business owners and administrators. Financial Management: Explores the importance of effective financial management in the church, providing helpful guidance for handling financial matters responsibly. If you are looking for practical insights and transformative perspectives on church leadership and service, this book is for you. I hope you feel inspired to dive into this journey of discovery and growth. Thank you very much for the opportunity to share this recommendation with you. Book Leading from the Second Chair

Download or read book Leading from the Second Chair written by Mike Bonem and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They say it's lonely at the top. And it can be even lonelier when you are almost at the top. Church leaders who hold second-chair positions are under tremendous pressure. They are expected to do their jobs and provide leadership but to defer to the top leader too. It's a demanding balancing act. How can they lead effectively while serving under someone else's leadership? Leading from the Second Chair offers an invaluable resource to leaders who serve in second- (and third- and fourth-) chair roles, enabling them to become more productive, proactive, and fulfilled. The book reveals the paradoxes of second chair leadership. These leaders must be subordinate to the top leader yet lead in their own right. They should be deep in their expertise but wide in perspective. And they must be content in their jobs yet remain enthusiastic about their dreams for the future. Mike Bonem and Roger Patterson share their own and others' experiences of failure and success in this vital role. They offer support and practical advice for reshaping the way second-chair leaders can serve well and improve the overall performance of their church or organization. Leading from the Second Chair equips readers with the positive attitudes, skills, and strategies needed to become powerful leaders who will survive and thrive in God's service.

Download or read book Minding His Business written by Don Corder and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church is not a business—but it often has to conduct aspects of business. When a church needs a lawyer, it hires a lawyer. When it needs a plumber, it hires a plumber. But when it comes to making business decisions, it typically doesn’t consult someone with business expertise. Instead, it convenes well-meaning but often inexperienced volunteers to form a committee that takes a month to make a decision about which color to paint the nursery. Conducting business this way is a vision killer that drains the passion out of creative, relational pastors and ministry leaders. Bottom line: The modern church is being poorly managed but does not know it. The level of inefficiency and waste in today’s churches is staggering. Minding His Business was written specifically for churches to convey basic business wisdom, management principles, and the best business practices. Unlike intimidating business textbooks, it includes forty short vignettes designed to be read like a daily devotional. Each chapter deals with everyday challenges and offers real-life examples—derived from the author’s more than thirty years of experience—that show how to (and sometimes how not to) handle each situation of conducting business for the church.
