Book Origin Evolution and Biogeographic History of South American Turtles

Download or read book Origin Evolution and Biogeographic History of South American Turtles written by Marcelo S. de la Fuente and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extended continental South American turtle record (Norian to Lujanian) allows us to follow the evolution of this reptile clade from its origins. Several significant stem turtle taxa such as: Palaeochersis talampayensis and Condorchelys antiqua provide information on the first steps of turtle evolution. Others such as: Chubutemys copelloi or Patagoniaemys gasparinae provide clues to the origin of the bizarre horned tortoises of the clade Meiolaniidae. The panpleurodiran species such as Notoemys laticentralis or Notoemys zapatocaensis shed light on the origin of modern pleurodiran turtles. This book explores aquatic and terrestrial cryptodiran turtles, South Gondwana pleurodiran turtles, North Gondwana pleurodiran turtles; Meiolaniforms and early differentiation of Mesozoic turtles.

Book Intersexuality in the Animal Kingdom

Download or read book Intersexuality in the Animal Kingdom written by R. Reinboth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Richard Goldschmidt' coined the term "intersexuality" in 1915, he intended it to apply to normally dioecious species which exhibit some kind of mixture between male and female characters. However, as knowledge of the bewildering variability present in the sexual orga nization of members of the animal kingdom has increased, the original meaning of the word has changed. Today many authors define inter sexuality as "the presence of both male and female characteristics, or of intermediate sexual characteristics, in a single individual".2 This more extensive and widely accepted concept justifies the title of our book •. Among all the anatomical and physiological features of living organisms the reproductive system has a unique importance for the perpetuation of the species. Conversely, reproductive processes are of little or no account for the viability of the individual. Therefore, within the framework of general biology reproduction has all too often been looked at solely from the point of view of genetics. Lively discussions about genotypic versus phenotypic sex determination long dominated the sci entific literature on sexuality in animals; this one-sided emphasis has tended to obscure many important facets of an organism's ability to reproduce. Recent developments in current biological research have brought the classic problem of sex differentiation into focus again, and the rapid progress being made in comparative endocrinology has added a new di mension to the study of reproductive biology.

Book Turtles and Tortoises of the World

Download or read book Turtles and Tortoises of the World written by David Alderton and published by Facts on File. This book was released on 2003 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the previous edition: "An excellent source for research. Highly recommended."—The Book Report While reptiles often receive an ambivalent reaction from the public, turtles and tortoises are surely the exception. People have kept them as pets for centuries and their affection for these creatures with attractively colored shells is reflected in art, literature, and popular culture. Turtles and Tortoises of the World fills a significant gap in available literature on the chelonia turtles, tortoises, and terrapins. Noted naturalist David Alderton presents a comprehensive account of these fascinating creatures, featuring recent chelonian research. The information on lifestyle, habitat, distribution, and human involvement is clear and easy to read. Enhanced by informative maps, as well as many color and black-and-white photographs, this volume emphasizes turtles' and tortoises' diversity of form and adaptability for survival.

Book Morphology and Evolution of Turtles

Download or read book Morphology and Evolution of Turtles written by Donald B. Brinkman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume celebrates the contributions of Dr. Eugene Gaffney to the study of turtles, through a diverse and complementary collection of papers that showcases the latest research on one of the most intriguing groups of reptiles. A mix of focused and review papers deals with numerous aspects of the evolutionary history of turtles, including embryonic development, origins, early diversification, phylogenetic relationships, and biogeography. Moreover it includes reports on important but poorly understood fossil turtle assemblages, provides historical perspectives on turtle research, and documents disease and variation in turtles. With its broad scope, which includes descriptions of material and new taxa from Australia, Asia, and Europe, as well as North and South America, this work will be an essential resource for anyone interested in the morphology and evolution of turtles. “This volume’s breadth of time, geography, and taxonomic coverage makes it a major contribution to the field and a ‘must have’ for all vertebrate paleontologists.”, James F. Parham, California State University, CA, USA “A comprehensive and sweeping overview of turtle evolution by the top experts in the field that will interest everyone curious about these unique reptiles.” Jason S. Anderson, University of Calgary, Canada “An invaluable addition to the literature that covers the full spectrum of approaches toward understanding the evolution of these noble creatures.” Ann C. Burke, Wesleyan University, CT , USA “A truly comprehensive volume that both the student of fossil turtles, as well as the general reader interested in these enigmatic creatures, will find fascinating.” Tyler Lyson, Yale University, CT, USA
