Book excerpt: Christian Reading shifts the assumption that study of the Bible must be about the content of the Bible or aimed at confessional projects of religious instruction. Blossom Stefaniw focuses on the lesson transcripts from the Tura papyri, which reveal verbatim oral classroom discourse, to show how biblical texts were used as an exhibition space for the traditional canon of general knowledge about the world. Stefaniw demonstrates that the work of Didymus the Blind in the lessons reflected in the Tura papyri was similar to that of other grammarians in late antiquity: articulating the students’ place in time, their position in the world, and their connection to their heritage. But whereas other grammarians used revered texts like Homer and Menander, Didymus curated the cultural patrimony using biblical texts: namely, the Psalms and Ecclesiastes. By examining this routine epistemological and pedagogical work carried out through the Bible, Christian Reading generates a new model of the relationship of Christian scholarship to the pagan past.

Book excerpt: The identification and publication of an ancient Armenian translation of Eusebius of Emesa's Commentary on Genesis (1980) and the edition of fragments of his work in the Greek Catena in Genesim have opened new perspectives for the study of this fourth-century scholar and bishop of Syrian descent. This book now brings together the evidence of the various branches of tradition of this work, the oldest complete Antiochene commentary to survive. The author concentrates on one of the most striking characteristics of Eusebius' commentary: its interest in translation problems and appeal to alternative readings. Apart from the Septuagint, the version commented on, Eusebius quotes "the Syrian" (ho Syros) and "the Hebrew" (ho Hebraios). It has long been unclear what or who answered to these names. The author proposes a new solution to this problem. The first part of this study deals with the content and affiliations of all biblical quotations in the Commentary, and with their place in Eusebius' method of exegesis. The author demonstrates that Eusebius refered to the Hebrew and Syriac texts in their original languages. He had direct access to the Syriac text (and is thus one of the oldest witnesses to the Peshitta version), but used informants for his knowledge of the Hebrew text. His approach in assessing the value of the different versions of the biblical text is contrasted with that of his predecessors Origen and Eusebius of Caesarea, his contemporary Jerome, and later Antiochene exegetes who followed or criticized him. The second part gives the basis of the first: it is a collection of all passages that cite alternative readings. All texts are given in their original languages and in English translation. A commentary deals with the textual tradition of each passage, identifies the questions Eusebius wanted to solve by the use of alternative readings, contrasts his handling of the text with that of others, establishes his sources, and studies the biblical quotations in detail.

Book excerpt: In addition to the classical literary corpus, Chrysostom, like many other educated Christians, relied upon the Scriptures as an equally important source. Focusing on the use which writers made of the Scriptures in order to convey their moral, social, and theological ideas, this study is unique in that it offers a detailed analysis of patristic rhetoric against the background of the scriptural corpus. A close examination of a wide range of Greek exegetical and homiletic writings, in particularly the newly-available edition of the Greek Catena, reveals that the Fathers wrote and preached in accordance with well-established literary conventions. Chrysostom, his Antiochene colleagues and his Alexandrian rivals approached the biblical text with a full appreciation of the methods formulated by their predecessors. The evidence of the exegetes' meticulous and calculated use of the biblical text contradicts the present scholarly tendency to describe the homiletic literary output as spontaneous and free-flowing. For the first time, Chrysostom is examined not in an isolated way, but in the wider context of Antiochene and Alexandrian exegesis, and their respective theological ideologies. When studying the wider aspects of the Fathers' methods of interpretation, it becomes clear that the study of ideas cannot be separated from the study of their modes of expression.

Book excerpt: 'I am a Christian' is the confession of the martyrs of early Christian texts and, no doubt, of many others; but what did this confession mean, and how was early Christian identity constructed? This innovative study sets the emergence of Christian identity in the first two centuries, as it is constructed by the broad range of surviving literature, within the wider context of Jewish and Graeco-Roman identity. It uses a number of models from contemporary constructionist views of identity formation to explore how what comes to be seen as 'Christian' literature creates a sense of what to be 'a Christian' means, and traces both continuities and discontinuities with the ways in which Jewish and Graeco-Roman identity were also being constructed through their texts. It seeks to acknowledge the centrality of texts in shaping early Christianity, historically as well as in our perception of it, while also exploring how we might move from those texts to the individuals and communities who preserved them. Such an approach challenges more traditional emphases on the development of institutions, whether structures or credal and ethical formulations, which often fail to recognize the rhetorical function of the texts on which they draw, and the uncertainties of how well these reflect the actual practice and experience of individuals and communities. While building on recent recognition of the diversity of early Christianity, the book goes on to explore the question whether it is possible to speak of a distinctive Christian identity across both the range of early texts and as a pressing historical and theological question in the contemporary world.
