Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the Apostolic Age A history of Christianity in the Apostolic Age should begin with an account of the life and teachings of our Lord. In the series, however, to which the present work belongs a separate volume has been assigned to "The Life of Jesus," and intrusted to the competent hand of Professor Rhees. I have therefore only touched upon the post-resurrection period, so far as it was necessary to set forth the immediate origin of apostolic Christianity. The purpose of this volume, like the others in the series, is strictly historical. At the same time brief accounts of the New Testament books, with occasionally a defence of their right to be classed with apostolic literature, have been introduced, both because they constitute practically our only sources for the history and because an examination of them is the best means of illustrating the history itself. It is hoped, also, that this feature will make the volume serviceable to a larger number of readers. I have not, except in a few instances, attempted to mention the many works by which my own studies have been guided and enlightened. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Christianity in the Apostolic Age The scope of the present volume is sufficiently indi cated by its title. It has been my endeavor in writing a history of Christianity in the Apostolic Age to treat the theme as a unit, and to trace the development so far as possible in its totality. The volume necessarily contains much that falls properly within the province of special works upon New Testament literature, exegesis, or the ology; for the Apostolic Age is the age of the New Tes tament, and in the pages of the latter are found the thoughts and deeds of the leading actors in the history. But it has been my constant aim to subordinate all such special subjects to the common end, and to deal with them only in so far as they'constitute a vital part of the larger whole. This aim, I hope, will serve to explain the arrangement and to some extent the selection of material. At the same time, there are some matters, not vitally connected with the development as a whole, a discussion of which is looked for in a work on the Apostolic Age, and which I have not felt at liberty, in view of the gen eral purpose of the series of which this book forms a part, to neglect altogether; and so in the selection of material I have departed occasionally from my own ideal. But even in such cases the attempt has been made to keep the main subject well to the fore, and to let it control the entire treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Christianity, in the Apostolic Age This work has been done with a conviction that the Simple facts about the gospel in the first Christian generation are as interesting as a great imaginative poem, as essential to a liberal education as a knowledge of Greek history in the time of Pericles or of English history in the reign of Henry VIII, and more inspiring, more illuminating as regards the very spirit of Jesus, than the facts of any subsequent period in the long history Of the Christian church. Book The Apostolic Age of the Christian Church Vol 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Age of the Christian Church, Vol. 2 This relation can be deduced from the attitude of the Jewish Christians to Gentile Christianity. The great concession, which was certainly granted to the apostle Paul, could hardly fail to result in a firmer adherence to their own position of fidelity to the law. But, besides, we have to remember that at least a considerable portion of the Church had not supported the concession, and had certainly afterwards not agreed to it. This party now naturally exerted their influence all the more strongly, and indeed used some degree of compulsion, in the same direction. Thus even the events in Antioch are explained. As regards the further course of events, however, we must not forget, to begin with, that we have to consider, not merely the principles of Peter on the one hand, and of James on the other, but that those zealots for the law and against Gentile Christianity without law, formed, side by side with them, an independent party, which hardly felt itself bound by what had taken place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Post-Apostolic Age The demand for the series of volumes of which this is one is an interesting witness to an interest ing and significant situation. Church histories have been hitherto of chief if not of exclusive interest to scholars; and even within this narrow circle the demand for merely ecclesiastical histories has been narrower still. But if our age has brought nothing else with it, it has brought an instinct of historic inquiry which has, happily, largely freed itself from partisan or ecclesiastical bias, and which has learned to read and to tell the story of the Christian cen turies in a larger spirit and with a more candid ut terance. To this end the whole tendency of modern schol arship, with its more critical and more independent methods, has happily contributed; and side by side with the growth of a spirit of frank and fearless ia quiry, there has grown up among educated people a more intelligent judgment of historical facts, and more hearty appreciation of every endeavor to as certain them. Book The Apostolic Age

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Age: Its Life, Doctrine, Worship and Polity The late appearance of this volume in the series to which it belongs, calls for a word of explanation. It is scarcely two years since the death of Bishop A. C. Coxe, of Western New York, who had already put his hand to the work, led to the task being transferred to the present writer. Under these circumstances he hopes that the original subscribers will not grudge the time taken in carrying through, amid other duties, the needful studies and reducing tho results to something like unity. How far this volume may deserve its place in "a series of popular monographs," its author is hardly able to judge. But he has at any rate tried to avoid abstract or artificial grouping, and to describe the concrete life of the Apostolic Age as it manifested itself, now here, now there, at the points of greatest activity. In this way the emphasis and perspective of the facts, whether of the Church's "constitution, fundamental polity, doctrine, worship, or social and spiritual life," seem to have the best chance of telling on tho mind directly and in their own right. Only in three chapters at the end has a formal attempt been made to systematize some of the facts already presented, for the most part, in their own proper contexts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Age The labour of translation has been lightened by much kindness and help received from various friends, to whom my acknowledgments are due. Professor von Dobschutz has taken great interest in the translation of his work into English, and both by correspondence and in conversation has been ever ready to give me the benefit of his advice and co-operation. I have also had the advantage of talking over a number of points with my friend Mr. G. G. Berry, while I have drawn freely, and never in vain, upon the theological learning of my friend Rev. H. D. A. Major, Vice-Principal of Ripon Clergy College, with the result that the translation has greatly benefited by his suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Post-Apostolic Age and Current Religious Problems The peculiarity of the present is that a group of scholars in the Church is challenging the historical View of twenty centuries. Hence doubt as to the authority of the Scriptures and the certainty of the Christian faith is whispered from ear to ear. And the multitude are saying: Well, then, we will trouble ourselves little with either Bible or creed. As the practical result, there is a growing dissolution of the bonds of religion. And the worst is, that, from this point of View, the multitude is right. If Christianity be true, it cannot undergo a radical change. Only the false can be torn up by the roots. Only the cancer must have the knife to the core. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Age, in the Light of Modern Criticism The following essay, substantially in its present form, was prepared for a course of Lowell Institute lectures, given in March, 1904. The purpose for which it was originally written has considerably affected the arrangement and the mode of presenting the subject. The writer's aim was not to offer a critical examination of the innumerable questions which arise in the study of the Apostolic Age, nor to cover the ground with encyclopedic completeness, but rather to outline a sketch from which a popular audience might gain a stronger sense of the human historical reality which modern critical study finds in the men and events of this stirring period of the world's history. In so rapid a view it was inevitable that many matters, even of some importance, should be inadequately treated or left altogether unmentioned, and any thorough student of these themes will frequently observe such gaps.
