Download or read book Christian Ethics Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by H. Martensen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Ethics, Vol. 2 Etween the present volume and my work published i many years ago, and entitled Outlines of Moral Philosophy, there exists connection, in so far as that production of my youth, in which everything was only briefly and generally sketched, finds here more c0pious expression; but besides this there is alteration, as the necessary consequence of a more profound research into the first principles and the religious postulates on which the science of Ethics is founded. Readers of my Christian Dogmatics will find here the same fundamental conceptions which formed the basis of that work, but treated from another point of view relatively independent of doctrines of belief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Ethics, Vol. 2: Pure Ethics Christianity, but thus far no one has yet done for Christian Ethics in our literature, what Danaens and Calixtus did for it in the Reformed and Lutheran Churches of continental Europe. The Science of Christian Ethics is with us almost unknown. Too many of our least suspected manuals, written by honored and able evangelical divines, presuppose and continually imply a Socinian anthropology, and a worse than Romish soteriology. Book Christian Ethics and Modern Problems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Ethics and Modern Problems Classic Reprint written by William Ralph Inge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Ethics and Modern Problems The history of moral philosophy, from the Greeks to the nineteenth-century Utilitarians, does not fall within the scope Of this book. Nor will it be necessary to examine in detail different types Of ethical theory, as has been done by Martineau, Sidgwick, Green, and many others. My plan is to take the Ethics Of the New Testament as embodying, on this side, the Chris tian revelation, and to bring these into comparison with the principles which seem to underlie the theory and practice Of the white races in our own day. In this book I am concerned only with Western civilisa tion; I have neither the knowledge nor the space for a consideration Of Asiatic peoples. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Ethics, Vol. 2 In accordance with the earnestly expressed desire of the author of this work, Dr. H. Martensen, Bishop of Zealand, the present translation has been made directly from the original Danish, and not through the medium of the German edition. It is hoped that the author will thus have suffered less from the disguise of the terse and forcible style in which he expresses himself in his own tongue, than would have been possible if the book had passed through the ordeal of two different interpreters, more especially as the Danish language has far more affinity to English, in the structure of sentences, than to German. Philosophical terms, such as moment, have been left untranslated, both as being doubtless familiar to English students of this class of literature, and also because, if in a few instances this is not already the case, the context will generally bring out the meaning of such terms clearly enough, without interference with the author's choice of words. It is probably superfluous to remind the English reader, that whenever reference is made to the Decalogue, the division of its parts differs from that to which we are accustomed. Thus, "Honour thy father and thy mother" is spoken of as the fourth commandment, and the first table of the law is said to consist of three precepts. In the work of translation, great encouragement has been experienced from the lively interest manifested in its progress, not only by the venerable author himself, who most courteously supplied information on any point on which he was consulted, but also by many friends in this country, as Professor Calderwood, Dr. Lindsay Alexander, Dr. Macgregor. Book excerpt: CHRISTIAN ETHICS CHRISTIAN ETHICS AN INTRODUCTORY READER “The selection of readings is excellent and I’d happily have my students devour them.” Esther Reed, University of Exeter “Clear, sharply focused, and precisely what is needed. This book is enlightening and potentially transformative. It presents Christian ethics as an exciting theological enterprise and offers a rich, deep, and accessible way of practicing ethics.” John Swinton, University of Aberdeen “Wells and Quash have put together a wonderfully comprehensive survey of Christian ethics while at the same time offering a distinctive and fresh perspective … With the array of primary texts and judicious and very well-informed commentary that the two volumes represent, they have succeeded in constructing an extremely valuable resource for teachers and students of Christian ethics.” Michael S. Northcott, University of Edinburgh (of Introducing Christian Ethics and Christian Ethics: An Introductory Reader) Christian Ethics: An Introductory Reader provides a comprehensive anthology of primary documents and materials relating to the emergence and study of key approaches to Christian ethics. The volume seeks to encompass the entire canon of Christian ethics, including first-hand accounts from major figures in the theological and ecclesial tradition. Readers are introduced to foundational figures such as Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, and Barth, as well as contemporary voices including Rosemary Radford Ruether, James Cone, Jürgen Moltmann, Stanley Hauerwas, Oliver O’Donovan, Wendell Berry, and many others. Other notable figures not usually associated with the study of formal theoretical ethics, such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., are also represented. The significance of each extract is summarized through useful introductory sections, placing the author or text in the context of broader developments in Christian ethical theory. Whether it is used independently or alongside the accompanying textbook, Introducing Christian Ethics, this engaging and informative volume offers students a window into the fascinating evolution of Christian ethical thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of three volumes in Oliver O’Donovan’s masterful “Ethics as Theology” project. In his first volume -- Self, World, and Time -- O’Donovan discusses Christian ethics as an intellectual discipline in relation to the humanities, especially philosophy, theology, and behavioral studies, and in relation to the Christian gospel. In Finding and Seeking O’Donovan traces the logic of moral thought from self-awareness to decision through the virtues of faith, hope, and love. Blending biblical, historico-theological, and contemporary ideas in its comprehensive survey, this second volume continues O’Donovan’s splendid study in ethics as theology and adds significantly to his previous theoretical reflection on Christian ethics.

Book The Ethical Teaching of Jesus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ethical Teaching of Jesus Classic Reprint written by Charles Augustus Briggs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethical Teaching of Jesus This book originated from a course of lectures, which were prepared for the students of the Union Theological Seminary, in the fulfilment of my duty as Professor of Biblical Theology. The field of Bib lical Theology may be divided into three divisions. Biblical Religion, Biblical Faith, and Biblical Ethics (see General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture pp. 604 sq). After the completion of the courses on Biblical Religion and Biblical Faith I undertook an inductive study of Biblical Ethics. This I found to be a comparatively unexplored field; for most scholars have devoted their attention to the central theme, the Biblical Faith: many to the Re ligion of the Old Testament; but few to the Ethics, either of the Old Testament, or the New Testament; and these few have for the most part considered the subject on the basis of selected passages for homi letical or practical purposes from the point of view of the ethical Philosophy, which they held. My atten tion was first given to the ethics of the Old Testa ment, after which I made a complete inductive study of the Ethics of Jesus. This study was revised sev eral times as the lectures were repeated to different classes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
