Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Christian Attitude to War: A Contribution to the History of Christian Ethics Here, then, is a subject on which we need clear light, and this excellent piece of research certainly brings considerable illumination; it is a subject that will not cease to vex the Church until we have decided either to make as unequivocal a condemnation of war as we have of slavery, or to abandon altogether any profession of whole-hearted allegiance to the Christian faith. Book The Sword of Christ and the World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sword of Christ and the World War Classic Reprint written by Perry James Stackhouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sword of Christ and the World War The World War has forced many new, pressing, and perplexing problems upon the preacher. To him has been intrusted the gospel of reconciliation, of peace and good will to men, and how to preach that gospel in a world of war when nation is divided against nation and a man's foes are found even in his own national household, is by no means easy for him to determine. He may be successful in evading or ignoring the problems of the higher criticism and the doctrine of evolution; but war, with its terrible, insistent, and heart-searching questions, is a brutal, stubborn fact that must be met and answered. Let it be granted that the preacher has fallen upon difficult days. New questions which go to the very core of religion and ethics are hurled at him. A hundred new demands are being made upon his time, and when he is asked to give up his service for the advertising of liberty loans or for a discus sion of the problems of food conservation, he is sometimes in doubt as to whether the calls of coun try are the calls of God. This book, in part, is based upon addresses given by the writer to members of his congregation and other audiences, on some of the questions raised by the war. The material, however, has been revised and rearranged, and four of the eight chapters are new. It is an attempt to interpret the gospel and the duties of Christian citizenship in an age of to the people who wait upon our ministry. Book System of Christian Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book System of Christian Ethics Classic Reprint written by Isaac August Dorner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from System of Christian Ethics The last twenty years of Dorner's life were clouded by the dementia of his youngest son - a youth of the brightest promise, who, while pursuing his gymnasium studies, was overtaken with the disease from which he has never recovered. To those who knew the intensely domestic and affectionate nature of the man, the manner in which he bore this trial was a touching revelation of the depth of his Christian faith and resignation. And when to this affliction was added his own physical suffering, his Christian character still bore the test. As Professor Kleinert says, in his memorial address before the Berlin Faculty, In all this no complaint passed over his lips, no painful word concerning his bodily pain. Scarcely a quiver of the hand, or a tear in the eye, betrayed his mental suffering, when he had to surrender to other hands one after another of the official duties and voluntary labours of benevolence which had grown into his very heart. He suffered not like a Stoic, with a heart steeled against the Medusa gaze of a brazen fate. He suffered like a child of God that receives from the Father's hand, with unwavering trust, even what is hard to bear; like one that has peace in the atonement and has hope reaching beyond death. Book Christian Ethics Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Ethics Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Adolf Wuttke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Ethics, Vol. 1 In virtue of his firm and independent nature - partly inborn and partly developed in the severe school of experience - he felt also a pressing need of a firmly-based construction of his theo logical views, and of a clear, distinct, and unambiguous ex pression of the same. This need was in part met by the Lutheran form of doctrine. It is true, he saw very clearly the defects and imperfections which a scientific construction and demonstration of this doctrinal formula bring to light; taking into consideration, however, its essential features, he found in it the purest and truest didactic presentation of evangelical truth.* To preserve this form of the truth in its main features. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Ethics: Special Part; Second Division: Social Ethics The moral life of society is developed in the Family and I the State; in the mid-regions or departments of Culture, Art, and Science; and, lastly, in the Church, whose inmost core is the Communion of saints. These several social organisms are to be regarded, on the one hand, as possessions, and hence as realized aims, in which man finds satisfaction, profit, pleasure; on the other, as moral individuals on a large scale, having each its special office to discharge. And I, the small individual, am to be a personal member of one and another of these social circles, to occupy with respect to them a relation at once of co-operation and appropriation, of toleration and devotion, while constantly aiming at my own perfection and the perfection of the whole. One essential side of man's destination is displayed in each of the social circles, and the purpose of Christianity is to develope the "new man" within each. It is in proportion as the Christian ideal of human nature is realized in them, that the kingdom of God attains a social, and at the same time an individual, appearance on earth. The kingdom of God, however, neither does nor can attain its perfection in this world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Early Christian Ethics in the West

Download or read book Early Christian Ethics in the West written by H. H. Scullard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Ethics in the West: From Clement to Ambrose IT is the object of this treatise to give some account of the history of Christian Ethics in the West from the close of the Apostolic Age to the death of Ambrose in the year 397 a.d. That period of three hundred years presents many fascinating problems to the student of Christian thought, but there is none Of them which is at once so fruitful and so little exhausted, as the first presentation and development of Christian ethical re flection after its liberation from apostolic guidance, and on gracco-roman soil. In spite of the importance Of the subject, and the many learned and successful attempts to deal with different aspects Of this many sided question, it has not yet been worked With the same fulness and thoroughness as the closely-related field of Christian doctrine. Book Ethical and Religious Problems of the War

Download or read book Ethical and Religious Problems of the War written by J. Estlin Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethical and Religious Problems of the War: Fourteen Addresses The war in which Great Britain is now engaged has many aspects, and springs out of a long historical development. With its manifold antecedents the Addresses in this volume are not concerned, nor do they attempt to deal with the various problems, social, economic, industrial, international, which must more and more engage the thoughts of all who look forward to its close. But this great tragedy involves many minds in grievous perplexity. Not only has it overthrown the hopes for the securer establishment of peace among the leading European nations which had been steadily growing since the first Hague Conference in 1899, it has shaken the fundamental convictions of the righteous order of the world, and the significance of the whole evolution of humanity upon this globe.
