Most of these are rarely performed with orchestral accompaniment. But the proportion is increasing; and it is most desirable, in the interests of musical culture, that this increase should continue, however small the orchestral force employed may be. Organists constantly inquire for a short handy book which will give them a technical grounding in the scoring of their compositions. And it is for their use that this slim volume has been written. It makes no pretence of taking them into the high sun-smitten pastures of modern orchestration. But it does claim to lead them to the foothills there under, and to deal practically 'with the routine problems which face them on every page of their compositions. General principles have by no means been avoided - indeed, they are the foundation of the book. But they are shown mainly in their application to every-day orchestral necessities. When once these applications have been grasped, there is nothing to prevent their extension into the more elaborate fields of instrumentation, according to the musical ability of the individual composer. A foundation-technique is the thing to aim at, a tech nique that gives one ease and certainty of orchestral method. The locality, object, and circumstances attending the formation of a new society can alone guide its projectors as to the basis to adopt. When the society is the outcome of Instruction Classes carried on by a teacher (either professional or amateur) the conductor will naturally wish to keep the reins of government in his own hands, asking probably for no more assistance than that of a secretary. The members of such a society, feeling indebted to their conductor for their musical training, will bow to his authority and carry out his wishes without question. The conductor will equally respect the members. He has led them from the alphabet of music to a more or less advanced stage of the art he knows of what they are capable, and he should be the best judge of the steps to take to complete the work which he began, and to the fulfilment of which he may have for years given his best energies. A conductor in this position should think carefully before launching into printed rules, elected officers, and committee. Committees who are not consulted, and officers who have no duties assigned them, resent the unreality of their position; and if the conductor be not ready to let them take their share in the management of the society, dissatisfaction or open rupture will be the result.
