  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Chiropractic written by Edzard Ernst and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all forms of alternative medicine, chiropractic is the one that is most generally accepted. In the UK, for instance, chiropractors are regulated by statute and even have their own ‘Royal College of Chiropractic’. In the US, chiropractic’s country of origin, most chiropractors carry the title ‘doctor’ and many consumers believe they are medically trained. Despite this high level of acceptance, chiropractic is wide open to criticism. The claims and assumptions made by chiropractors are far from evidence based. Chiropractic manipulations are of doubtful effectiveness and have regularly been associated with severe adverse effects, including multiple fatalities. The advice issued by chiropractors to patients and consumers is often less than responsible. The behaviour of chiropractors and their organisations is frequently less than professional. This book presents and discusses recent evidence in and around chiropractic in a factual and unemotional manner. It amounts to an evidence-based critique of this profession and discloses the often dangerously misleading information published for the lay audience. It thereby contributes to advancing public health and critical thinking.

Book The Religion of Chiropractic

Download or read book The Religion of Chiropractic written by Holly Folk and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chiropractic is by far the most common form of alternative medicine in the United States today, but its fascinating origins stretch back to the battles between science and religion in the nineteenth century. At the center of the story are chiropractic's colorful founders, D. D. Palmer and his son, B. J. Palmer, of Davenport, Iowa, where in 1897 they established the Palmer College of Chiropractic. Holly Folk shows how the Palmers' system depicted chiropractic as a conduit for both material and spiritualized versions of a "vital principle," reflecting popular contemporary therapies and nineteenth-century metaphysical beliefs, including the idea that the spine was home to occult forces. The creation of chiropractic, and other Progressive-era versions of alternative medicine, happened at a time when the relationship between science and religion took on an urgent, increasingly competitive tinge. Many remarkable people, including the Palmers, undertook highly personal reinterpretations of their physical and spiritual worlds. In this context, Folk reframes alternative medicine and spirituality as a type of populist intellectual culture in which ideologies about the body comprise a highly appealing form of cultural resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades brain injury was considered the death sentence for the living. Once a person experienced trauma to the brain whether from forces outside the body or inside, he or she was never able to return to their previous life. The medical profession offered little treatment and even less hope for recovery. People spent a lifetime suffering depression, memory loss and pain, unable to perform activities that once was considered normal. Depression and pain was numbed through drugs which became a lifetime dependence. Memory was considered a thing of the past. Moderate to severe brain injury causes the person to have even worse limitations. Loss of the use of an arm or leg or both results in a lifetime dependence on people to perform simple activities that even a child can perform. The only treatment this person receives is a short stint of rehab that everybody in the medical profession involved knows will have no effect on the person’s condition. There are no drugs that can improve this condition and the expectation is a life of severe limitations. The outlook is bleak. Chrissy’s Song reveals that out of personal tragedy comes the shining light of hope for all. Coming out of its pages are various treatments that have a positive effect in successfully treating brain injury. These treatments are not new but have been around for decades. Through its pages, you will learn why these treatments have been deliberately hidden from those people that needed them the most. Astonishingly, the lame can walk. A sixty-five year old man has a severe stroke and loses use of his arm and leg. Through unique targeted rehab techniques, he regained full use of his limbs. This occurred sixty years ago.

It may, however, be studied just as easily by the field practitioner, and is not too technical in most of its parts to be readily grasped by the layman. Book excerpt: This book reveals the numerous ways in which moral, ethical and legal principles are being violated by those who provide, recommend or sell ‘complementary and alternative medicine’ (CAM). The book analyses both academic literature and internet sources that promote CAM. Additionally the book presents a number of brief scenarios, both hypothetical and real-life, about individuals who use CAM or who fall prey to ethically dubious CAM practitioners. The events and conundrums described in these scenarios could happen to almost anyone. Professor emeritus of complementary medicine Edzard Ernst together with bioethicist Kevin Smith provide a thorough and authoritative ethical analysis of a range of CAM modalities, including acupuncture, chiropractic, herbalism, and homeopathy. This book could and should interest all medical professionals who have contact to complementary medicine and will be an invaluable reference for patients deliberating which course of treatment to adopt.
