Book excerpt: Excerpt from China as Described by Great Writers It is manifestly impossible in a book of this size to give a detailed description of eighteen provinces covering a mil lion and a half square miles in which there are no less than four thousand walled cities! I have, therefore, had to limit my selections to a few of the best-known places and leave the rest to general articles. Book The Foreign Trade of China Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foreign Trade of China Classic Reprint written by Chong Su See and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foreign Trade of China Much has been written about China, but seldom, if ever, from the Chinese point of view. Most of the books given to us by foreign writers have not done the Chinese justice. They generally describe the activities of the foreigner in China in his own terms and solely from his own stand point, and are designed primarily to justify the policy of some power in that country. As to the impression pro duced by those activities upon the Chinese themselves, we are left perfectly in the dark. They tell us that China ought to do this, and that China ought to do that, not for her own benefit, but in order to promote the interest and profit Of the foreigner. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that all the authors have been intentionally unfair, for in some cases the prejudice has been due to the inability to see more than one side of the medal. However, what has been done has been done not the less effectively. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of China The eyes of the world are more and more turned toward China. We are coming to be profoundly interested in the fate of that greatest of Asiatic peoples. And it is well that we are. No other existing nation can look back over as long a past of continuous development as can China. When the foundations of Greece and Rome were being laid and when the great Hebrew prophets were in the midst of their ministry, a nation was being shaped and a civilization formed which have come down through the centuries with a comparatively unbroken history. There have been changes, but none of them as violent as those which have shaken the West during the same period. Only two other cultural groups - that in India and that in the Mediterranean Basin - have had as dominant an influence over as large a section of mankind. Book James Legge and the Chinese Classics

Download or read book James Legge and the Chinese Classics written by Marilyn Laura Bowman and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 969 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Legge (1815-1897), was a great Scots scholar and missionary famed as a translator of the Chinese Classics when struggles between Britain and China included two wars. It was an era of sailing ships, pirates, opium wars, the swashbuckling East India Company, cannibals eating missionaries, and the opening of Qing China to trade and ideas. Legge was vilified by fundamentalist missionaries who disagreed with his favourable views about Chinese culture and beliefs. He risked beheading twice while helping Chinese individuals being terrorized during the Taiping Rebellion. He became so ill from Hong Kong fevers when only 29 that he was forced to return to the UK to save his life. Recovering, he and his three talented Chinese students attracted such interest that they were invited to a private meeting with Queen Victoria. Legge thrived despite serious illnesses, lost five of his 11 children and both wives to premature deaths, survived cholera epidemics, typhoons, and massive fires. He was poisoned twice in a famous scandal, helped save a sailing ship from fire on the high seas, took in a bohemian Qing scholar on the run, foiled a bank-bombing plot, and earned enmity in the colony for providing court testimony about translation that favoured accused Chinese men rather than the colonial authorities. Legge’s resilient responses and incredible productivity reflected the passion he had developed at the age of 23 for understanding the culture of China. He retired to become a Fellow of Corpus Christi College and the first Professor of Chinese.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The China Mission Year Book, 1925 One important development in the literary world has not found a place in the Year Book as it is yet too soon to do more than merely refer to it. This is the formation of a group of Chinese Christian writers as a result of two retreats held last year. This group expects to produce a steady stream of indigenous literature and so greatly strengthen the' forces reported in the four articles included. The reader who wishes to study further in this field is referred to the 1924 Year Book where there is a good deal of material not repeated this year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Things Chinese: Being Notes on Various Subjects Connected With China Nearly forty years spent in China have given the author many opportunities of observing and studying the Chinese in almost every aspect of their life and character, and, while indebted to other writers as well, he has largely availed himself of these personal observations and experiences in the production of this book. The first appearance of Mr Basil Hall Chamberlain's 'things Japanese' gave rise to the idea of 'things Chinese, ' until now, in the words of that author in the Preface to his Fourth Edition of 'things Japanese' (for edition after edition of it and 'things Chinese' have been issued nearly parz' passu), 'in the un likely event of anyone instituting a minute comparison between this edition and its predecessor, he would find minor alterations innumerable - here a line erased, there a paragraph added, or again a figure changed, a statement qualified, a description or a list brought up to date, even a score (or two or more) of completely new articles inserted. But take it altogether, the book remains the same as heretofore.' So the same may be said of this Fourth Edition of 'things Chinese.' A word here, a line there, now a clause, then a term struck out, a phrase deleted, or sentence altered - all have had their share in making it necessary to put the word 'revised' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings From Fifty Years in China It was while engaged in his earlier trips on the Upper Yangtse that Mr. Little collected material for the inter esting book (published in 1888) entitled Through the Yangtse Gorges, which established his reputation as a graphic and sympathetic writer on China. This was followed some years later (1901) by Mount Omi and Beyond, which introduced us to the little-known region of Szechuan on the Thibetan Border and to a phase of Chinese life, untouched as yet by foreign intercourse, which his linguistic acquirements and experience enabled him to depict with the perception and sense of humour that had delighted his readers in the previous work. Download or read book China in Transformation Classic Reprint written by Archibald R. Colquhoun and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China in Transformation The first edition of China in Transformation appeared in 1898, at a time when signs of renascence were Obvious only to those who had the opportunity to look below the surface. The author's first imten tion in bringing out the present edition was merely to preserve those parts which appear to have a permanent value, but in practice it was found difficult to adhere to this, and the result is a book, of which many chapters are strictly new, while all have been carefully revised and brought up to date. If it appears that rather undue proportion is given to the history of the middle of last century, and especially to the diplomatic and commercial relations of that period, it must be' explained that the material for this was obtained by the author in 1897 from original sources no longer available either to the student or the general reader. For this reason, this portion has only been Slightly cur tailed, in order to fit into the general perspective.
