Book Research Manual in Child Development

Download or read book Research Manual in Child Development written by Lorraine Nadelman and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003-10-03 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique hands-on lab manual in child development provides great ideas and resources for teaching research courses involving child subjects. It includes projects in psychomotor/perceptual, cognitive, and social development. Projects are preceded by background essays on the history of that topic, related research, theoretical issues, and controversies. Each project has hypotheses to test, detailed procedures to follow, all stimuli, individual and group data sheets, empty tables, suggested statistics, discussion questions, and an updated bibliography. Special features of this second edition: *The introductory text portion details research considerations, including an introduction to psychological research, sections on developmental research, children as subjects, and general experimental research procedures. *The popular Infant Observation project has the student visit homes with babies for a semester and provides practice in observational data collection, reliability assessment, and report writing. *The cognitive development section includes two new subfields: Theory of Mind and Language--Children's Interpretation of the Word Big, in addition to classic studies of Piaget's spatial perspective-taking and attention and memory. The final chapter describes a suggested neuropsychological project. *The socialized child section includes a new study on sibling relationships as seen by the older or younger sibling, in addition to the earlier projects on self-esteem, sex identity, and cooperation-competition. The final section describes a suggested cross-cultural interview project.

Book Play Therapy Interventions with Children s Problems

Download or read book Play Therapy Interventions with Children s Problems written by Garry L. Landreth and published by Jason Aronson. This book was released on 2010-08-14 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an easy-to-use reference to the most effective play therapy techniques and their substantiated results. Play therapy is not an approach based on guess, trial and error, or whims of the therapist at the moment. It is a well-thought-out, philosophically conceived, developmentally based, and research-supported method of helping children cope with and overcome the problems they experience in the process of living their lives. Concise digests of play therapy procedures explore the most difficult, as well as the most common problems encountered by play therapists. These digests cover play therapy approaches based on a variety of theoretical positions for dealing with a broad range of specific problems. Because they often do not have access to substantiated results, play therapists sometimes doubt themselves and the effectiveness of their work. This book, an invaluable resource, puts an end to such questioning.

Book Self Perspectives across the Life Span

Download or read book Self Perspectives across the Life Span written by Richard P. Lipka and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When and how is the self acquired and what characterizes its development and change over the life span? What are the implications of using different methodologies to study the self with different age groups? This book addresses these and related questions. The authors offer research on early and middle childhood, late childhood and adolescence, and adulthood and old age. Among the issues considered are the relationship between cognitive complexity and self-evaluation in childhood, the pivotal socio-emotional tasks that confront the adolescent, and effects of situational and structural factors on the self-esteem of adolescents and adults, and age and gender differences in the ideal and undesired selves of young and older adults. These contributions illustrate the different theoretical and methodological issues that are associated with differing stages of the life span and provide a summary of the current knowledge base of the self across the life span. Unlike previous books on study of the self, this one provides a systematic analysis of the theoretical and methodological issues and a selection of several alternative methodologies for studying the self across the life span.

Ronald J Samuda presents a comprehensive analysis of the perspectives, pitfalls, fallacies, issues, consequences and trends in the use of standardized norm-referenced tests with American minorities. He demonstrates that testing continues to be the primary method for injecting pseudoscientific arguments which bolster discrimination, prejudice and social injustice.

Book Measures of Self concept

Download or read book Measures of Self concept written by Ruth C. Wylie and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruth C. Wylie's two volumes of The Self-Concept, published by Nebraska in 1974 and 1979, evaluated psychological and sociological studies of self-concept and self-esteem. Looking at a plethora of tests, Wylie found in 1974 that very few had been adequately conceived or implemented. Many produced results that wereøunverifiable or specious. Her findings had disturbing implications not only for the tests themselves but for substantive research based upon them. In the 1980s psychometric tests of self-concept have continued to proliferate. Wylie has continued to assess them. Measures of Self-Concept briefly summarizes the psychometric criteria for self-concept tests, as fully discussed in Wylie's 1974 book, and the present general state of methodological adequacy of currently used earlier tests and some promising new ones still under development. Although Wylie still finds serious shortcomings, she notes a greater attempt today to increase and evaluate the validity of self-concept indices. This book presents detailed, up-to-date information about and psychometric evaluations of ten self-concept tests that appear to be the most meritorious candidates for current use and for further research and development. It is the first book since her 1974 volume to review specific as well as general measures of self-esteem for a range of ages from preschool to adult.

Book Physical Appearance Stigma and Social Behavior

Download or read book Physical Appearance Stigma and Social Behavior written by C. Peter Herman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, this book grew out of a symposium held in 1981 at the University of Toronto on physical appearance as a determinant of personality and social behavior. There is little doubt that one’s appearance has some impact on the way one is perceived and treated; and presumably, owing to the socially reflected nature of the self, one’s personality likewise will be affected by one’s appearance. The questions arising from these basic observations and assumptions are many, and the expert contributors were invited to discuss their research on some of the implications of individual differences in appearance as they ramify into personality and social interaction. The chapters in this volume are the outcome of those discussions and cover the areas of facial attractiveness; physique; impact on social behavior, and deviance. Still a topic of interest to this day, this book can now be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
