Book Children and Movies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Children and Movies Classic Reprint written by Alice Miller Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children and Movies It is difficult to appreciate the fact that in 1900 movies were commercially unknown. To attempt to recreate in the imagination a world in which there are no motion-picture "palaces" is almost as difficult as to recreate the existence of the people of the old Stone Age. The movies are everywhere: in the city and the country, in the Orient and the Occident, in the two hemispheres. Some say they are too much with us; but collectively we seem to find them almost as essential and certainly as ubiquitous as the newspaper or the milkman. One hundred million Americans are supposed to have attended the movies in 1928. This mass movement has something of the portent of an irresistible tide welling up and over and into the dark caverns and galleries of a rocky ocean shore, receding only to renew the surge again and again. But with this difference: each human unit of this vast movie tide is swept out from the dark cavern just a little different than when it was swept in. All America, indeed all the modern world, is thus ceaselessly played upon by the ebb and flow of sight and sound. No one can fail to be deeply impressed by the immense power of this new Warwick in the modern state, helping to form and mold and strengthen the interests, opinions, and ambitions of the voting masses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sky Movies WE tell children things in the clearest words at our command. They say the words back to us and we are satisfied that they have learned something. We think that because they have the words they have the idea. A little investigation will show that very often the words are all they have, the sounds, and nothing whatever of the idea. So, whenever you teach a child something new, be sure to tie the stranger to an old familiar friend. If that does not seem possible, use pictures and drawings and illustrations until the child has a group of related ideas concerning this new idea. Then let him talk it back making his meaning clear by word and gesture and drawing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Movies and Conduct Classic Reprint

Download or read book Movies and Conduct Classic Reprint written by Herbert Blumer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Movies and Conduct Motion pictures are not understood by the present generation of adults. They are new; they make an enormous appeal to children; and they present ideas and situations which parents may not like. Consequently when parents think of the welfare of their children who are exposed to these compelling situations, they wonder about the effect of the pictures upon the ideals and behavior of the children. Do the pictures really influence children in any direction? Are their conduct, ideals, and attitudes affected by the movies? Are the scenes which are objectionable to adults understood by children, or at least by very young children? Do children eventually become sophisticated and grow superior to pictures? Are the emotions of children harmfully excited? In short, just what effect do motion pictures have upon children of different ages? Each individual has his answer to these questions. He knows of this or that incident in his own experience, and upon these he bases his conclusions. Consequently opinions differ widely. No one in this country up to the present time has known in any general and impersonal manner just what effect motion pictures have upon children. Meanwhile children clamor to attend the movies as often as they are allowed to go. Moving pictures make a profound appeal to children of all ages. In such a situation it is obvious that a comprehensive study of the influence of motion pictures upon children and youth is appropriate. Book New York Times Essential Library Children s Movies

Download or read book New York Times Essential Library Children s Movies written by Peter M. Nichols and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-11-06 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable guide for parents from a leading expert on children's film For years Peter M. Nichols has been offering vital advice and information for parents about current movies in his regular "Taking the Children" column. But parents need the same kind of guidance when renting or buying videos and DVDs for their family. They may know that movies such as Toy Story and Chicken Run are good choices for their children, but Nichols helps parents go beyond the obvious choices to more unconventional movies like The African Queen and Some Like It Hot. From the classics of animation to a host of great comedies and dramas, Nichols provides a knowing and illuminating guide to one hundred great cinematic works. Each brief original essay not only explains why the children will enjoy the film but also allows Nichols to offer timely bits of film history and to discuss certain films in a larger cultural context. Nichols's knowledge and understanding of films is broad and deep, and many of his choices-especially of films that we might not have thought of as "children's films"-will surprise and delight readers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Film Folk: "Close-Ups" Of the Men, Women, and Children Who Make the "Movies" As a detached, but interested, observer he watched the moving picture industry grow from its crude beginnings to the huge thing it has become, and during all those years he wondered why some one of the great army of publicity men employed by the various studios did not splash in and tell the truth about the film folk, finally concluding that it was either that their familiarity with the truth had bred contempt, or that the companies, for some strange reason, had employed only fiction writers. Book The Business of Children s Entertainment

Download or read book The Business of Children s Entertainment written by Norma Odom Pecora and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2002-03-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 20 years, the development of children's television programming has been subsidized by toy manufacturers. The result has been an increased commercialisation of children's popular culture - the creation of a "material world" of childhood characterized by brand-name toys, games, clothing, and television characters. Drawing on historical background and case studies, this book presents a unique look at the development of children as targets of the media and commercial industries, and examines the economic and social forces that have defined the evolution of children's entertainment. This volume is of interest to professionals and students in media studies, mass communication, and related fields; readers interested in contemporary children's culture and the content of children's programming.

Book The Best Old Movies for Families

Download or read book The Best Old Movies for Families written by Ty Burr and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If a child can watch Barney, can’t that same child also enjoy watching Charlie Chaplin or the Marx Brothers? And as they get older, wouldn’t they grow to like screwball comedies (His Girl Friday), women’s weepies (Imitation of Life), and westerns (The Searchers)? The answer is that they’ll follow because they’ll have learned that “old” does not necessarily mean “next channel, please.”Here is an impassioned and eminently readable guide that introduces the delights of the golden age of movies. Ty Burr has come up with a winning prescription for children brought up on Hollywood junk food. FOR THE LITTLE ONES (Ages 3—6): Fast-paced movies that are simple without being unsophisticated, plainspoken without being dumbed down. Singin’ in the Rain and Bringing Up Baby are perfect.FOR THE ONES IN BETWEEN (Ages 7—12): “Killer stories,” placing easily grasped characters in situations that start simply and then throw curveballs. The African Queen and Some Like It Hot do the job well.FOR THE OLDER ONES (Ages 13+): Burr recommends relating old movies to teens’ contemporary favorites: without Hitchcock, there could be no The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, without Brando, no Johnny Depp.

Her mother had given her a party, and all her little friends, both boys and girls, had been invited. The tree, with its hundreds of colored lights and gayly tinted balls and bells and wreaths of tinsel, each branch loaded until it fairly groaned with gifts small and big, had been set in the drawing-room carefully darkened as if it were indeed night. The guests agreed that they had never before seen so beautiful a Christmas-tree. All the tints of the rainbow glowed among the green, while strings of glass beads and chains of polished metal glistened like rain-drops in the summer sun.
