Book New Directions in Cancer Treatment

Download or read book New Directions in Cancer Treatment written by Ian T. Magrath and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few decades, there has been a tremendous improvement in the treatment of cancer. There is evidence that this trend is continuing, based on the achievements re sulting from the combined efforts of clinicians and basic re search workers. This book is an example of such interaction and collaboration. It was prepared by authors representing both areas of work. Most of the work reported in this book is not merely theoretical, but has been experimentally successfully tested and sometimes applied clinically. This work has, however, not yet been generalized and practiced on a wide scale. Some of the results reported here relate to new aspects and open new horizons for future progress. This book will be of great value for both clinicians and basic research workers. VICC Treatment and Rehabilitation Programme ISMAIL ELSEBAI Chairman Preface The three main approaches to the treatment of cancer are surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Today, all malignant neoplasms are managed by one or more of these modalities, with varying success rates depending on the type of tumor, its degree of spread, and the knowl edge and skill with which the treatment plan has been designed and executed. In the United States of America and in Europe, approximate ly half of all cancer is presently curable, but this has been the case for approximately 20 years.

Book Childhood Cancer and Functional Impacts Across the Care Continuum

Download or read book Childhood Cancer and Functional Impacts Across the Care Continuum written by National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, the survival rate in children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer has steadily improved, with a corresponding decline in the cancer-specific death rate. Although the improvements in survival are encouraging, they have come at the cost of acute, chronic, and late adverse effects precipitated by the toxicities associated with the individual or combined use of different types of treatment (e.g., surgery, radiation, chemotherapy). In some cases, the impairments resulting from cancer and its treatment are severe enough to qualify a child for U.S. Social Security Administration disability benefits. At the request of Social Security Administration, Childhood Cancer and Functional Impacts Across the Care Continuum provides current information and findings and conclusions regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of selected childhood cancers, including different types of malignant solid tumors, and the effect of those cancers on childrenâ (TM)s health and functional capacity, including the relative levels of functional limitation typically associated with the cancers and their treatment. This report also provides a summary of selected treatments currently being studied in clinical trials and identifies any limitations on the availability of these treatments, such as whether treatments are available only in certain geographic areas.

Book Clinical Epidemiology of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Download or read book Clinical Epidemiology of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia written by Juan Manuel Mejia-Arangure and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes different perspectives of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The approach includes aspects of molecular epidemiology, particularly molecular features that influence the genesis and prognosis of the disease. Some aspects of the prognosis of lymphoblastic leukemias are very detailed, highlighting the use of molecular biology in the early identification of complications that may occur in diseased patients. The authors of the present book conform a Mexican group who identifies the causes of leukemia, and they summarize their experience in research, results and proposals for future studies. A causal model is included in which the authors hypothesized the origin of acute lymphoblastic leukemias, particularly in children. This hypothesis can be useful to better understand other cancers during childhood. This book will help the reader to identify different molecular aspects involved in leukemia, and its relation to the development and evolution of the disease.

Book The Hygiene Hypothesis and Darwinian Medicine

Download or read book The Hygiene Hypothesis and Darwinian Medicine written by Graham A.W. Rook and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-24 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man has moved rapidly from the hunter-gatherer environment to the living conditions of industrialised countries. The hygiene hypothesis suggests that the resulting reduced exposure to micro-organisms has led to disordered regulation of the immune system, and hence to increases in certain chronic inflammatory disorders, like allergic disorders, autoimmunity, inflammatory bowel disease, atherosclerosis, depression, some cancers and perhaps Alzheimer and Parkinson. This book discusses the evidence for and against in the context of Darwinian medicine, which uses knowledge of evolution to cast light on human diseases. The approach is interdisciplinary, looking at man’s microbiological history, at the biology of the effects of microorganisms on the immune system, and at the implications for chronic inflammatory disorders in multiple organ systems. Finally, the authors describe progress in the exploitation of microorganisms or their components as novel prophylactics and treatments.

Book Hematologic Malignancies Acute Leukemias

Download or read book Hematologic Malignancies Acute Leukemias written by S.H. Faderl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Better therapy of acute leukemias depends ultimately on better understanding of the distinction between leukemic and normal progenitor cells. This hugely important new book describes the current knowledge of acute leukemia biology and discusses new classification systems that have arisen as a result of emerging insights into pathogenesis. Estey, Faderl and Kantarjian, who all work at the respected Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, USA, examine in detail advances in the treatment of particular types of acute leukemia. Their book also covers the management of acute leukemia in general as well as the development of new therapies. This book will be extremely useful to clinicians.

Book Walking with a Shadow

Download or read book Walking with a Shadow written by Nanci A. Sullivan and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Childhood cancer, particularly leukemia, is on the rise. Leukemia strikes one child in every 25,000, and most often does so between the ages of 3 and 7. Annually, more than 2,700 children are diagnosed with leukemia in the United States. Due to advances in biotechnology and medicine, survival rates for this once-deadly disease now stand at 80%. But the psychological effects of diagnosis, removal from school, treatment, and remission or cure, linger. Here nine long-term survivors of childhood leukemia share their vivid memories and give us insight into the physiological changes, psychosocial and educational difficulties that became a constant shadow in their lives. Author Nanci Sullivan provides recommendations for ways teachers, counselors and other professionals may better help young students with leukemia cope.

Book Molecularly Targeted Therapy for Childhood Cancer

Download or read book Molecularly Targeted Therapy for Childhood Cancer written by Peter J. Houghton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-10 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each chapter will focus on the known molecular characteristics of specific childhood cancers, focusing on how the molecular ‘drivers’ can be exploited from a therapeutic standpoint with currently available targeted agents. Where applicable, integration of targeted therapies with conventional cytotoxic agents will be considered. This volume will provide a comprehensive summary of molecular characteristics of childhood cancers, and how the changes involved in transformation provide us with opportunities for developing relatively less toxic, but curative, therapies.
