Book Cyber Safe Kids Cyber Savvy Teens

Download or read book Cyber Safe Kids Cyber Savvy Teens written by Nancy E. Willard and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-03-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential strategies to keep children and teens safe online As our children and teens race down the onramp to the Information Superhighway, many parents feel left behind in the dust. News stories about online sexual predators, child pornography, cyberbullies, hate groups, gaming addiction, and other dangers that lurk in the online world make us feel increasingly concerned about what our children are doing (and with whom) in cyberspace. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Internet safety expert Nancy Willard provides you with need-to-know information about those online dangers, and she gives you the practical parenting strategies necessary to help children and teens learn to use the Internet safely and responsibly. Parents protect younger children by keeping them in safe places, teaching them simple safety rules, and paying close attention. As children grow, we help them gain the knowledge, skills, and values to make good choices--choices that will keep them safe and show respect for the rights of others. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Willard shows you how those same strategies can be translated from the real world to the cyberworld, and that you don't have to learn advanced computer skills to put them into effect. As you work on these strategies with your child, you will also discover that remaining engaged with what your children are doing online is much more valuable than any blocking software you could buy. "Willard blends the perspectives of a wise parent and a serious scholar about issues related to Internet behavior and safety. . . . Pick up the book, open it to any random page, and you will find on that page or nearby a wealth of helpful advice and useful commentary on the cyberreality facing our children and on how to deal with any of the issues she's identified." --Dick Thornburgh, J.D., former U.S. Attorney General; chair, National Academy of Sciences Committee on Youth Pornography and the Internet "Simply put, this book is a must-read for anyone--parents, educators, law enforcement, and policymakers alike--concerned with the critical issue of children's internet safety and what to do about it." --Douglas Levin, senior director of education policy, Cable in the Classroom

Book excerpt: My purpose for doing this book is to open a dialogue with parents to gain a deeper understanding of the internet and its effects on their childrens behavior. I hope to shine a light on the impact of digital exposure to the modeling of prosocial and antisocial behavior, the blurring of fantasy and reality, the virtual victimization of youngsters, and the sexualization and pornification of the media.

Book Cyberporn Protecting Our Children from the Back Alleys of the Internet

Subcommittee on Basic Research and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents witness testimony and supplemental materials from a Congressional hearing called to address concerns about the Internet becoming a forum through which minors can be exposed to pornographic or otherwise offensive material. It features opening statements by Congressman Steven H. Schiff, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Basic Research, Congresswoman Constance A. Morella, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Technology, as well as Congressmen Pete Geren and Curt Weldon. Testimony is included from two panels of witnesses. The first includes: (1) Anthony M. Rutkowski, Executive Director of the Internet Society; (2) Ann Duvall, President of Surf-Watch Software, Inc.; and (3) Steven Heaton, General Counsel and Secretary of Compuserve; all of whom offer background information on the nature and structure of the Internet and an introduction to screening software and other technologies that can assist parents in restricting access to obscene material on the Internet. The second panel includes: (1) Mike Geraghty; (2) Kevin Manson; and (3) Lee Hollander; who discuss the law enforcement perspective--the extent to which police and courts can restrict the activities of the purveyors of cyberporn, problematic issues in attempting legal regulation of the dissemination of information, and outlets for cyberporn-related grievances. Book The V chip Debate

Download or read book The V chip Debate written by Monroe E. Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The V-chip is a highly significant part of the discussion about whether television (or broadcasting in general) deserves some special attention in terms of its accessibility to children, its particular power to affect conduct, and its invasiveness. But as this notion of filtering and labeling has caught the imagination of the regulator, the legislator, and all those who wish to consider new ways to alter bargaining over imagery in society, the very idea of the V-chip or its equivalent is moving across other technologies, including the Internet. The V-chip issue has also fueled the ongoing debate about violence and sexual practices in society, and how representations on television relate to those practices. Although the initial concept of the V-chip is simple, its flow into the public realm raises so many extraordinary questions that the introduction and production of the chip virtually serves as a case study in problems of law and public policy. The very conceptualization of speech in society is being affected by this issue. Accordingly, the place of the V-chip in this debate is increasingly important; indeed, it may be argued that the V-chip's contribution to legal argumentation may be greater than its ultimate contribution to the relationship between children and imagery. Among the questions the contributors address are: *What research basis is necessary to require a framework for labeling and rating? *What relationship between government and the image-producing industries can be characterized--for constitutional and other reasons--as voluntary as opposed to coercive? *Who should evaluate these images? *To what extent should the evaluation process be centralized and/or distributed? *What assessment is appropriate to evaluate whether the experiment is "successful?" In addition to the V-chip's origin's in Canada and its further evolution in the United States, this book discusses the development of the V-chip and television rating systems in Europe, Australia, and throughout the world. It also includes essays which contrast the very different approaches in Canada and the United States in terms of the role of regulatory agency, industry, and government.
