Book excerpt: Children and youth occupy important social and political roles, even as they sleep in cribs or hang out on street corners. Conceptualized as either harbingers or saboteurs of a bright, secure tomorrow, they have motivated many adult-driven schemes to effect a positive future. But have all children benefited from these programs and initiatives? Lost Kids examines adults' misgivings about, and the inadequate care of, vulnerable children. From explorations of interracial adoption and the treatment of children with disabilities to discussions of the cultural construction of the hopeless child, this multifaceted collection rejects the essentialism of the "priceless child" or "lost youth" simplistic categories that continue to shape the treatment of those who deviate from the so-called norm.

Book Asian Immigrants in Two Canadas

Download or read book Asian Immigrants in Two Canadas written by Habiba Zaman and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-06T00:00:00Z with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada is experiencing a major demographic shift, with two-thirds of the population in major cities predicted to belong to racialized groups, particularly Asian newcomers, by 2031. But how are these immigrants faring in this new Canada? Employing the International Labour Organization’s concept of “basic security” and the voices of immigrants themselves, Asian Immigrants in “Two Canadas” demonstrates that their security – such as work, job, employment, and voice and representation – has been compromised in multi-dimensional ways. Changes to immigration policy and the neoliberal restructuring of the Employment Standards Act in British Columbia have led to further marginalization within the labour market and the creation of deregulated and hazardous workplaces – resulting in the emergence of “two Canadas” within the Canadian welfare state. Representing a diverse group of immigrants, this book demonstrates a shared experience of precariousness and insecurity – an experience that has led to a broad- based alliance of Asian immigrant workers aimed at addressing workplace security and rights.

Book Not There Yet

Download or read book Not There Yet written by and published by UN. This book was released on 2009 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study, developed in collaboration with the UNICEF National Committee in Canada, forms a component of Innocenti Research Centre's (IRC) research on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This wider project has examined law reform and the implementation of the Convention in 62 countries. Assessment is currently underway of the progress under other General Measures of implementation of the Convention in the same countries. In-depth case studies of countries in different regions of the world provide the opportunity to illustrate good practices, lessons learned and remaining challenges within the framework of the General Measures. Canada represents an important and multifaceted case to examine as a large federal state in which responsibility for the protection of children's rights is shared between provincial governments and the national government. The study identifies progress that has been made and gaps remaining to be filled in addressing the General Measures of implementation of the Convention in the Canadian context.

Book excerpt: Now, in place of having an Employment Standards In changing the Employment Standards officer determine the suitability of a workplace Act the provincial government eroded the for a 12- to 14-year old, a letter from a parent mechanisms that protect children. [...] First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition will recommend specific improvements to the Employment Standards Act and regulations to bring BC's law into compliance with the commitments Canada and BC have made as signatories to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, with the International Labour Organization Convention 138 standards, and with best practices in other jurisdictions. [...] The variations in the estimates about the numbers of children working in BC points to the need for government to use its resources and regulatory authority to step up and monitor this most vulnerable population, as advised by local children's advocates and international observers. [...] The goal of the session was to "collect opinions and ideas on current and required young worker resource materials aimed at parents." In their report on the session, the Ipsos Reid facilitators noted "Parents first need to understand and take ownership of the young worker safety issues before they will offer to help promote prevention initiatives. [...] While greater education and awareness is always helpful, it remains the case that within the context of a virtually unregulated environment for child workers education does not change the fact that once a child is on the worksite, parents are powerless to ensure that the child is safe and that tasks are age appropriate.

Book Understanding Child and Family Welfare

Download or read book Understanding Child and Family Welfare written by Marie Connolly and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-19 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do workers around the world balance risk and support to ensure that their practice meets the ever-changing needs of children and their families? Renowned authors Marie Connolly and Kate Morris join forces to explore the frameworks and ideas which have shaped contemporary child and family welfare practice. From definitions of abuse to assessment models, they examine the knowledge base which lies at the heart of safe and effective statutory practice with children and families. Drawing on examples from a range of English-speaking jurisdictions, the book explores: - How to engage families, including participatory approaches and the role of the Family Group Conference - How to create positive out-of-home environments for children, discussing foster, kinship and residential care and adoption settings - How to improve professional decision-making through supervision and other organizational frameworks. At a time when child welfare systems across the globe are undergoing review, Understanding Child and Family Welfare provides a timely exploration of the reform agendas which will shape future practice. With sharp analytic insights into the difficulties and dilemmas which characterize this field, it is fundamental reading for all students studying child and family support or child protection, as well as for practitioners working within children and family settings.

Book Disadvantaged Workers

Download or read book Disadvantaged Workers written by Miguel Ángel Malo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes empirical contributions focusing on disadvantaged workers. According to the European Commission’s definition, disadvantaged workers include categories of workers with difficulties entering the labour market without assistance and hence, requiring the application of public measures aimed at improving their employment opportunities. In addition to the labour market perspective, this is also relevant in terms of social cohesion, which is one of the central objectives of the European Union and of its Member States. This work deals with the most relevant groups of disadvantaged workers, namely disabled workers, young workers, women living in depressed areas, migrants in the labour market and the long-term unemployed, and analyses the situation in the Italian, Spanish and some African labour markets. The determinants of disadvantage in the labour market are investigated, highlighting both the role of supply variables, including structural factors and the weakness on the demand side, the role of the economic crisis and the ineffectiveness of some labour policies. A complex framework emerges in which disadvantaged groups may share common problems, both in terms of integration into the labour market and in terms of working conditions, but often require group-specific policies, taking into account their intergroup heterogeneity.
