Book Chess Tournament the London 1851

Download or read book Chess Tournament the London 1851 written by Howard Staunton and published by Hardinge Simpole Limited. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Staunton, the organiser of London 1851 and writer of the book, was the epitome of mid-Victorian versatility and self confidence. By defeating the leading French and German masters such as St Amant, Horwitz and Harrwitz in gruelling set matches, Staunton had established himself as the champion. Now, by organising the first ever International Chess Tournament, Staunton hoped to display chess in its true colours, amongst the imperial splendour of the 1851 Great Exhibition in Queen Victoria's London. Although Staunton did not win the tournament, this honour falling to the German master Adolph Anderssen, this record of the inaugural international chess gathering provides a fitting monument to Staunton's prowess and love of the game.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London 1851 is both a historical document and an excellent book on how to calculate. This fourth edition has new topics and more diagrams. Good books on how to analyze, and how to calculate in particular, are hard to come by. The Turning Points series gives loads of well-analyzed exercise positions in problem-solution form, culled from famous tournaments, in which there was a possible inaccuracy, and challenges the reader to solve them better than the players did. The solutions not only contain the variations and some hindsight, they also point out the positional features that motivate our selection of candidate moves, steer us to the right decisions and guide our calculations. These features are known as the motives. Motives, like the Trema, Consecutive Rooks, the Knight's Collateral Squares, Pawn Links, the Queen Penetration Sac, and many others, will become easily identifiable on the board and the player will be equipped with characteristic ways to react to them. A new addition for June 2015 is "Running Captures". London 1851, with 166 analysis positions in problem-solution form and about 100 more in the appendices, is the best of the Turning Points Series so far: the difficulty ranges from very easy to extremely difficult so that the motives also range from the most fundamental (Kings-Floaters-Lines) to much more subtle ones like King Side Preponderance, which can clue the player in to highly surprising speculative sacrifices. The Appendices cover: A) Kings, Floaters, Lines, with a detailed look at the most fundamental motives B) The Attack, with a more in-depth look at attacks from the tournament C) (a brief look at) Promoting the Pawn, an area in which even today's top players still make serious mistakes. The book concludes with an extensive index.

Book Eminent Victorian Chess Players

Download or read book Eminent Victorian Chess Players written by Tim Harding and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book portrays British chess life in the nineteenth century through biographical studies of ten players who shaped the modern game. From Captain Evans, inventor of the famous gambit, to Isidor Gunsberg, England's first challenger for the world championship, personal narratives are blended with game annotations to reassess players' achievements and character. The author has combined deep reading in primary sources with genealogical research to reveal new facts and correct previous misunderstandings. Major chapters on Howard Staunton and William Steinitz, in particular, highlight the tensions between Englishmen and immigrants, amateurs and professionals. The contrasting long careers of Henry Bird and Joseph Blackburne provide a thread of continuity. The lives of several other important figures in Victorian chess are also presented. More than 160 games (with diagrams), several annotated in detail, and 50 photographs and line drawings are included. Appendices provide career records for all ten; there are extensive notes, a bibliography and indexes.

Book Chess Theory from Stamma to Steinitz 1735 1894

Download or read book Chess Theory from Stamma to Steinitz 1735 1894 written by Frank Hoffmeister and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most chess biographies present the games of famous players--but not their writings. Filling that gap, this book begins with Syrian master and author of chess studies Philip Stamma, and finishes with the first world champion William Steinitz. The main novelties in opening, middlegame and endgame theory in the 160 year period are examined and biographical sketches put the contributions of more than 30 masters into context. The author presents many new insights--for example, regarding the origins of the Ponziani Opening, the Dutch Defense and the Petroff Defense. French star La Bourdonnais used other sources for almost every part of his Nouveau Traite. Morphy's analysis of the Philidor Defense was faulty and Anderssen's play included many positional ideas. Harrwitz and Neumann published modern treatises long before Steinitz came out with his Modern Chess Instructor. Many ending themes belong to less well-known authors, such as Cozio, Chapais, van Zuylen van Nyevelt, Sarratt, Kling and Horwitz, Berger and Salvio.

Book The Chess Battles of Hastings

Download or read book The Chess Battles of Hastings written by Jürgen Brustkern and published by New In Chess. This book was released on 2022-11-05 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other chess tournament has such a long and rich history as the annual gathering 'in between the years' at the English seaside resort of Hastings. Countless chess players, professionals, and amateurs alike have celebrated Christmas and welcomed the New Year in Hastings while battling it out on the chessboard. German FM Jürgen Brustkern has been making the annual pilgrimage to Hasting ever since 1977. Together with his compatriot Norbert Wallet, he describes the tournament's fascinating history and portrays forty of the most colourful participants. The stories begin in 1895 when the young American Harry Pillsbury shocked the European chess elite with his victory, and they span 125 years. In this book, you will meet the strongest female players of all time, Vera Menchik, Nona Gaprindashvili, and Judit Polgar. You will get to know the mysterious Sultan Khan and the unorthodox Michael Basman and enjoy anecdotes about Mikhail Tal, Viktor Kortchnoi, and his rival Anatoly Karpov. How many World Champions came to Hastings? How expensive was the Golden Knight trophy that Lajos Portisch won? What was the effect of the British Chess Explosion? This collection of games and stories is enjoyed best in the dark days between Christmas and New Year's Eve, after a stroll on the beach, immersed in the spirit of Hastings. 'Should I trade my Romantic style for the modern way and only hunt for points?', Nicolas Rossolimo is quoted as asking himself. 'No, I won't. I will fight for chess as an art form.'

This volume provides a comprehensive overview, with more than a third of the 300 annotated games analyzed by past masters and checked by powerful engines. Players such as Max Lange and Cochrane, known to the chess public only by the name given to a fierce attack or gambit, are brought to life. Fifty masters are each given their own chapter, with brief biographies, results and anecdotes and an endgame section for most chapters.

Book H E Bird

Download or read book H E Bird written by Hans Renette and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No chess player of the 19th century had a longer, more varied career than Henry Edward Bird (1829-1908). After pursuing a civil career for years his love for chess prevailed. He belonged to the top level of British players for decades but he really shone at Simpson's Divan. Bird's accessibility, fierce attacking style and contempt for draws made him a people's favorite but his proud and touchy character led him into disputes with his colleagues. A very strong and widely known player, he fell into oblivion after his death. This comprehensive first biography of Bird provides a detailed account of his personal life and a deeply researched coverage of his feats at the chess board. Almost 1,200 games are included, hundreds of them published here for the first time. Nearly 450 games--many of them thrilling all-out fights--are presented with a mix of contemporary and modern annotations.
