Book Molecular Structure and Biological Activity of Steroids

Download or read book Molecular Structure and Biological Activity of Steroids written by Martin Bohl and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Structure and Biological Activity of Steroids focuses on the indentification of steroid structural features that control particular biological effects. Steroid geometry plays a critical role in steroid activity; therefore, the results of X-ray crystallographic, NMR spectroscopic, and theoretical studies on structure-activity relationships form an integral part of the book. Well-established observations and proposed models are presented, summarizing knowledge of molecular features (e.g., steroid backbone structures, side-chain constitutions, substitution sites, configurations, hydrogen-bonding patterns) that can affect steroid action. The book also provides overviews about recent progress in various frontier fields of steroid research, including such areas as sex steroids, glucocorticoids, aromatase inhibitors, vitamin D metabolites, brassinosteroids, neuromuscular blocking agents, and cardiotonic steroids. Molecular Structure and Biological Activity of Steroids is a "must-have" resource for biochemists, pharmacologists, endocrinologists, biophysicists, and others actively involved in steroid research.

Book Steroid Compounds with Potential Biological Activity

Download or read book Steroid Compounds with Potential Biological Activity written by Marina Savic and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steroids are a large group of compounds whose structure is based on a 17-carbon skeleton, with a specific cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene ring system. Natural steroids have been fine-tuned through evolution to build membranes; act as chemical messengers that regulate metabolic, immune and reproductive functions in animals and stimulate the growth of, or otherwise protect, animal organisms. The steroid core represents a suitable motive for structural modifications. Therefore, a large group of semi-synthetic steroid derivatives have occupied the attention of synthetic chemists as well as medicinal chemists due to their potential biological activity, including anticancer, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and (anti)hormonal activities. This Reprint of the Special Issue of Molecules titled "Steroid Compounds with Potential Biological Activity" is dedicated to both experimental and theoretical studies on steroid chemistry, structural biology, biosynthesis, metabolism, and pharmacology. The Issue focuses on the isolation and synthesis of steroid compounds, diverse in origin, as well as their structural characterization and identification. Published articles and reviews relate to in vitro and in silico studies of the pharmacological properties, molecular biology, biochemistry and structural biology of steroids.

Book Medicinal Chemistry of Steroids

Download or read book Medicinal Chemistry of Steroids written by F. J. Zeelen and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1990 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many new and fascinating data which have been gathered in the period 1985-1990 have made molecular endocrinology into a mature discipline stimulating creative chemists to design innovative drugs. Within a few years, the primary structures of all the steroid receptor proteins and most of the steroid-converting enzymes have been determined and detailed studies of their mechanism of action at a molecular level have become possible. Medicinal chemists have developed steroidal affinity probes to examine the binding sites of enzymes and receptors, and these investigations were supplemented with studies of modified enzymes and receptors prepared with the aid of site-directed mutagenesis. In view of these rapid scientific developments, the author deemed it appropriate to review the present knowledge of the medicinal chemistry of the steroids. In this book, the discussion is supported by the addition of some chapters which summarize the available data on the biological counterparts of the steroids, the steroid-converting enzymes and the steroid receptors.

Book Steroids and their Medicinal Potential

Download or read book Steroids and their Medicinal Potential written by Abid Hussain Banday and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steroids are an important class of biomolecules with diverse roles and functions. Besides being important as structural and signaling molecules, these molecules hold promise against numerous disorders, including cardiovascular conditions, cancer, inflammation, and autoimmune disorders. Many investigations have demonstrated that steroidal frameworks may provide lipid solubility, receptor selectivity, or membrane binding properties to non-steroidal pharmacophores. However, the therapeutic use of steroids can be dangerous when they're used incorrectly. Additionally, misconceptions about steroids among athletes or recreational users can lead to steroid abuse and poor health outcomes. Steroids and their MedicinalPotential discusses the classification, distribution, biosynthesis, chemical synthesis, and semi-synthesis of different steroids. The medicinal potential of each class is exhaustively discussed in different chapters. The latest advances and developments in steroid-based drug discovery are also discussed thoroughly. The book aims to address general questions and concerns about steroids, providing readers with a useful resource on the subject. Key Features -Provides comprehensive coverage on all aspects of steroids including steroid chemistry, biochemistry, medicinal potential, drug discovery, and advances in target-binding interactions of steroid-based drugs -Includes chapters dedicated to anabolic steroids and their abuse -Designed as an accessible source of information for understanding steroidal drugs with structured chapters-Includes references for advanced readers.

Download or read book Inflammation Mechanisms and Treatment written by D.A. Willoughby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report on Future Trends in Inflammation IV records another of the multidisciplinary meetings organized by the European Biological Research Association. The organizers wish to record their thanks to all the participants and delegates who made this such an enjoyable meeting. Our thanks are due to a number of members of the pharmaceutical industry who so kindly donated funds. These funds were used to provide grants for young research workers to attend this meeting. Many people have kindly given their time and help to make this congress possible. It is impossible to list them by name, but we are profoundly grateful. We were dubious at the outset as to whether to hold this meeting in a period when many other meetings are being organized on inflammation. The enthusiastic attendance proves that we were right in going ahead. The next international meeting will be held in France in 1983. For further details please contact: Professor J. P. Book Principles of Endocrinology and Hormone Action

Download or read book Principles of Endocrinology and Hormone Action written by Antonino Belfiore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides comprehensive coverage of the current knowledge of the physiology of the endocrine system and hormone synthesis and release, transport, and action at the molecular and cellular levels. It presents essential as well as in-depth information of value to both medical students and specialists in Endocrinology, Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine. Although it is well established that the endocrine system regulates essential functions involved in growth, reproduction, and homeostasis, it is increasingly being recognized that this complex regulatory system comprises not only hormones secreted by the classic endocrine glands but also hormones and regulatory factors produced by many organs, and involves extensive crosstalk with the neural and immune system. At the same time, our knowledge of the molecular basis of hormone action has greatly improved. Understanding this complexity of endocrine physiology is crucial to prevent endocrine disorders, to improve the sensitivity of our diagnostic tools, and to provide the rationale for pharmacological, immunological, or genetic interventions. It is such understanding that this book is designed to foster.
