Book excerpt: This study's purpose was to investigate if the dropout prevention program, Check and Connect, was effective and what the proper age of implementation should be. When determining the effectiveness of the program and proper age of implementation the research will include a survey where the opinions of educators who participate in the program are expressed, interviews with neighboring districts that implement the program, and collection of quantitative data through national and state education websites. This investigation will look into three main components being truancy, dropout rates, and behavior incidents. It will collect data given the main objectives from other schools that implement the program and compare the outcomes to the school of study. Reasoning for student drop outs should be taken into account when developing a dropout prevention program along with a proper identification model for at-risk students. The results revealed that the program had been effective in decreasing at least one of the following, truancy, dropout rates or behavior incidents, which is what the Check and Connect program focuses on. The study also showed that at the primary school of study dropout rates had drastically decreased four years after the implementation of the program. Finally, a common consensus from surveys and interviews revealed that the best age for the program to be implemented would be at the middle school level.

Numerous studies bring to life the negative consequences of dropping out of school for both the individual and society as a whole. Dropout Prevention: A Program That Works will not detail such consequences; rather, it will provide a roadmap for schools and districts that want to and must implement an effective dropout prevention program in order to best serve students. The following analogy stresses the importance of implementing an effective dropout prevention program immediately: When an obese person has a heart attack and is taken to the emergency room, the hospital first sends in the doctor to sustain the patient and try to save his life. The hospital does not first call in a nutritionist to discuss the patient's poor diet and lack of exercise. Currently, there are thousands of high school students dying on the ER table listening to a nutritionist.Too often educators say, “I need to see the research supporting that program” before they are willing to implement. But how much research is necessary? Is it enough to see an effective program at another school? Or do you need to have multiple longitudinal studies documenting the results before you are willing to act? Academic content is more diverse and challenging, and its delivery is increasingly text based, requiring competence in literacy and problem-solving skill areas. Students entering 9th grade often struggle to find an appropriate peer group and may face challenges at home, hindering motivation and diminishing school engagement. The combined and interrelated challenges of poor achievement and low school engagement increase the likelihood of dropping out. This study addresses important educational problems by providing evidence to support the efficacy of implementing individualized reading instruction and a dropout prevention program separately and in conjunction in improving reading achievement and school engagement for secondary students most at risk for academic failure. The reading intervention Check and Connect (C&C) was developed for struggling adolescents and originally field tested with funding from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development. The dropout prevention intervention in this study used a modified version of Check and Connect. The two studies that comprise the evidence base for C&C were conducted in the Minneapolis metropolitan area and targeted a specific population (primarily African American males receiving special education services), indicating a need for replication with other populations. The results from the first two years of the study are statistically significant in favor of the treatment group for the variables of high importance including students' perceptions of their school engagement and reading-related outcomes. Specifically, participants in the intensive reading interventions--with and without C&C--significantly outperformed those in a randomized, untreated comparison on a standardized measure of reading comprehension, and students participating in the modified C&C treatments--with and without reading--reported higher levels of school engagement over time compared to students in the untreated comparison.
