Book Politicians in the Pulpit

Download or read book Politicians in the Pulpit written by Eileen Groth Lyon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, the world of Christian radicalism in the first half of the nineteenth century is reconstructed here with thorough research by Eileen Groth Lyon. Christian radicals, during this period, sought to incite political action through the use of Scripture, using such themes as the rights of man as founded in God’s gift of creation, the deliverance of oppressed peoples, and the perceived favour towards the poor shown in the Gospels. The author tracks the origin and fate of the movement for the first time, from its beginnings in the eighteenth century, through its implementation in the major politic agitations of the early and mid-nineteenth century, to its fruition in the achievements of the campaigns for parliamentary, factory and poor law reform. By focusing on the Christian radical programme, Politicians in the Pulpit advances a new understanding of the most important political initiatives of early Victorian Britain.

Excerpt: ...but the facts were so obvious and the need for action so great that he was soon surrounded by an ardent band of co-workers, the most important of whom were Charles Kingslcy, Archdeacon Hare, William fztiil Ludlow and Thomas Hughes,1 while Robertson of Brighton, although not in sympathy with the socialism of these men, held closely to their views in other respects. This group had been considering for some time the best method of approach to the workingmen, when the revolution of 1848 on the Continent and the renewed activity of the Chartists at home gave them an opportunity which they at once seized. To the Chartists, disappointed after the fiasco on Kennington Common, Kingsley came with his appeal of April I2th.s This was followed on May 6th by the first number of Politics for the People to which Maurice, Kingsley, Ludlow, Archdeacon Hare, Professor Conington, Archbishop Whately and Sir Arthur Helps were important contributors.5 Politics for the People (1848) was far from being a Chartist publication; it was almost conservative. Physical Force Chartism was denounced even to the extent of condemning monster meetings, whether lawful or not, as senseless and criminal, and "the demand for universal suffrage by men who had neither education or moral self-government to qualify for the vote " 7 was vigorously opposed. 1 Scligman, "Owen and the Christian Socialists," Political Science Quarterly, vol. i, pp. 221, 239. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chartism, the mass movement for democratic rights, dominated British domestic politics in the late 1830s and 1840s. It mobilised over three million supporters at its height. Few modern European social movements, certainly in Britain, have captured the attention of posterity to quite the extent it has done. Encompassing moments of great drama, it is one of the very rare points in British history where it is legitimate to speculate how close the country came to revolution. It is also pivotal to debates around continuity and change in Victorian Britain, gender, language and identity. Chartism: A New History is the only book to offer in-depth coverage of the entire chronological spread (1838-58) of this pivotal movement and to consider its rich and varied history in full. Based throughout on original research (including newly discovered material) this is a vivid and compelling narrative of a movement which mobilised three million people at its height. The author deftly intertwines analysis and narrative, interspersing his chapters with short ‘Chartist Lives’, relating the intimate and personal to the realm of the social and political. This book will become essential reading for anyone with an interest in early Victorian Britain, specialists, students and general readers alike.
