Book excerpt: We report the observation of the first H-mode transitions in the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX). Energy confinement time transiently increased by more than a factor of 2, to order 100 ms. The heating power requirement for accessing the H-mode regime (power threshold) was significantly higher than predicted by a multi-machine database compiled from conventional aspect ratio tokamaks. Our power threshold results are similar to other STs, such as the START and MAST machines. These H-mode observations in STs challenge and extend the existing international power threshold and energy confinement time scalings based on conventional aspect ratio tokamaks. The remainder of this paper discusses characteristics of the H-modes in NSTX.

This book was released on 2005-09-16 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Methods of Statistics is a guidebook combining theory and practical methods. It is especially conceived for graduate students and scientists who are interested in the applications of statistical methods to plasma physics. Thus it provides also concise information on experimental aspects of fusion-oriented plasma physics. In view of the first three basic chapters it can be fruitfully used by students majoring in probability theory and statistics. The first part deals with the mathematical foundation and framework of the subject. Some attention is given to the historical background. Exercises are added to help readers understand the underlying concepts. In the second part, two major case studies are presented which exemplify the areas of discriminant analysis and multivariate profile analysis, respectively. To introduce these case studies, an outline is provided of the context of magnetic plasma fusion research. In the third part an overview is given of statistical software; separate attention is devoted to SAS and S-PLUS. The final chapter presents several datasets and gives a description of their physical setting. Most of these datasets were assembled at the ASDEX Upgrade Tokamak. All of them are accompanied by exercises in form of guided (minor) case studies. The book concludes with translations of key concepts into several languages.

Download or read book MARFE Stability and Movement in an ELMy H mode NSTX Discharge written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a comparison of Multifaceted Asymmetric Radiation From the Edge (MARFE) theory with experiment in the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) are presented. A variety of MARFE behavior was observed using a fast-framing camera. A basic MARFE theory was applied to NSTX Multi-Pulse Thomson scattering (MPTS) and charge-exchange recombination spectroscopy (CHERS) data. MARFE theory showed some limited agreement with experiment, but uncertainty in the separatrix location constrained the analysis. A method based on shifting iso-Te flux surfaces was used to estimate the separatrix location. The movements of MARFEs in NSTX are interpreted to result from diamagnetic heat flux driven drifts relative to the background plasma velocity and imply slowing edge poloidal rotation and/or changing edge profiles before a large ELM.
Download or read book Superconductors written by Yury Grigorashvili and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-04-20 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book "Superconductors - Properties, Technology, and Applications" gives an overview of major problems encountered in this field of study. Most of the material presented in this book is the result of authors' own research that has been carried out over a long period of time. A number of chapters thoroughly describe the fundamental electrical and structural properties of the superconductors as well as the methods researching those properties. The sourcebook comprehensively covers the advanced techniques and concepts of superconductivity. It's intended for a wide range of readers.
