Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters in the History of Old S. Paul's For some time past my hours of leisure, which have been only too few and far between, have been devoted to researches in the History of the Cathedral of S. Paul. I have enjoyed for twenty years the great honour of being a Member of the Cathedral Body and Keeper of its Records, and each succeeding year has but increased my love for the stately Sanctuary and its solemn Services, and augmented my interest in its venerable Archives. In the present volume I have endeavoured to embody in a popular form some of the results of my studies, in the hope that many who are repelled by Original Documents expressed in mediœval Latin, may read these desultory Chapters in the History of Old S. Paul's, and share with min the absorbing interest which gathers round the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings Old S. Paul's As the kind and indulgent readers of my little book Chapters in the History of Old S. Paul's, have been so good as to leave but few copies on the Publisher s shelves, and as that Publisher has himself asked for another and similar work, I venture hopefully to issue these Gleanings from Old S. Paul's, in bright and genial autumn weather - gleaning-time. Eight-and-twenty years have passed since, to my infinite and never-ceasing delight, I became, a Member on the foundation of this venerable Cathedral of S. Paul. Now, as then, every point in its story is full of interest for me. If the field of its grand History has been reaped already, there are abundant Gleanings to be gathered. Book St Paul s Classic Reprint

Download or read book St Paul s Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Grierson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's I AM sure that there is no one who goes to London for the first time, no matter how hurried he may be, who does not try to Visit at least three places the Tower, Westminster Abbey, and St. Paul's Cathedral. Of these three places, two are churches; but they are churches that are so connected with the history of our nation that they almost seem to stand at the heart of the Empire. Their stories are linked together in a curious way, and yet they are quite distinct. As someone has said, 'westminster Abbey was 'ever the Church of the King and Government; St. Paul's was the Church of the Citizens.' When we come to study the history of Cathedrals, we find the way in which they came to be built is pretty much the same in most cases. Paul and His Companions Epistles as genuine, he would be a bold man who would unhesitatingly question the claim of any of the Epistles to a rightful place in the New Testament canon. The author has therefore proceeded on orthodox lines and accepted as genuine such Epistles as 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, and Titus. Paul: In the Light of Modern Research This is a companion volume to the Old Testament and Gospels in the Light of Modern Research, but it runs on other lines. Perhaps I should strictly have called this book 'S. Paul in the light of Modern Thought.' In my previous works I dealt mainly with the present attitude of the Higher Criticism towards the origin, composition and historical trustworthiness of the books of Holy Scripture. The scope of this work is different. Every topic is still approached from a severely critical standpoint in the full light of recent research, but the main theme is Paul's own message, not questions of literary criticism, although these are at times unavoidable. My one wish and aim is to bring the mind of Paul and the modern mind into vital relation with each other, and, if possible, to help readers to understand and love the Paul whom I my self so deeply love and revere. Every day convinces me more and more that Paul is the Apostle of the present, still more of the future, and that - with a few important reservations - his solution of the deep problems of life is abreast of the best modern religious thought, often ahead of it. In the words of Matthew Arnold: 'Paul's reign has only begun, and his fundamental ideas, disengaged from the elaborate misconceptions with which ecclesiasticism has overlaid them, will have an influence in the future greater than any which they have yet had.' For us to-day, Paul is essentially the Apostle of Christ, His best interpreter, and it is through Paul, if at all, that we are to get 'back to Christ.' In our Bibles, Paul's gospel comes after the other four; but, in point of time and intrinsic value, it is avowedly the first. A true instinct prompted the Church to add the words, 'the Apostle, ' to the title of his Epistles and to no others. The skeleton-framework of this book is simple. Part I. opens with an appreciation of Paul's true place and influence in the history of Christianity. Several chapters are next devoted to a psychological review of Paul's early life and conversion. This is the key to the man and his work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Paul and His Missions The difficulties which certain modern writers have raised against them are, after all, but those light suspicions Which criticism is in duty bound to express freely, but without dwelling on them when far stronger reasons appear to outweigh them. In this case, these Epistles have a character of authenticity which overbalances all other considerations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes From the Life of St. Paul This book, it is hoped, will meet a want long felt by many of the teachers in our Sunday-schools, It is essentially a class-book for our elder scholars, -and 'aims at giving such an account of the great Apostle of the Gentiles as will enable our young people to form some notion of the struggle amidst which the Christian religion was planted in the world. The writer kept steadily in view the fact that he was preparing a class-book to be read, not in one or two sittings, but in short portions, spread over many weeks. This will account for some repetitions which might otherwise seem out of place. At the same time, feeling that such a book might prove acceptable to many of the younger members of our congregations, the writer has tried to throw in the repetitions he thought necessary in the way least calculated to make them tedious to the more continuous reader.
