Were they Chaldean Vedas or Vedic Chaldees? The Chaldeans were a pastoral nation and a priestly caste initiated in and entirely devoted to the sciences of Astrology and Magic. They were the aborigines of Western Europe and our distant ancestors — black and far blacker, perchance, than any of those we now look upon as the races to us inferior — the Asiatic Ethiopians! Eusebius declares that the Ethiopians came from India. Arabia was the ancient Ethiopia, and Arabi were placed at the mouth of the Indus, on the western bank. They preceded the Turano-Akkadians, who themselves anticipated the Hamitic nation brought along by Nimrod. Though dark-skinned, the Chaldeans were not necessarily Negroes, nor even Hamites. The dead letter of Chaldean Magic — useless and absurd incantations, ceremonial prayers and talismans — have passed part and parcel under the guise of exorcisms, holy water, ceremonies, pope-blessed amulets, and images of angels and saints, into the Catholic Church. The Chaldeans were a pre-Babylonian Brotherhood of Hierophants from Kashmir, Tibet, Mongolia, Tartary, China, and India. They spread westward, from the plateau of Pamir, cradle of the Elect of humanity’s Fifth Race. Occultism is intimately connected with Chaldean Wisdom, and its records show the forefathers of the Aryan Brahmans at the head of arts and sciences as Astronomers and Seers, confabulating with the stars, and receiving instructions from the concealed deity. Their sanctity of life and great learning made their name for long ages a synonym of Divine Science. The sublime profundity of the Magian precepts being beyond the reach of modern materialistic thought, the Chaldeans are accused of Sabaeanism and Sun-worship, cults which were simply those of the uneducated masses. Clemens Alexandrinus testifies to the existence of 30,000 additional volumes of the Books of Thoth, placed in the library of the tomb of Ozymandias, over the entrance of which were inscribed the words, “A Cure for the Soul.” Extant fragments of works by Mercury Trismegistus, Berosus, Pherecydes of Syros, etc., are rolls that escaped the holocaust of the great Alexandrian Library. More! The writings of the elusive Hermes Trismegistus spring from the same fountain and source: for they are the faithful echo and expression of the most ancient verities. Scattered fragments are being discovered in the sanctuaries of Chaldea, India, Phoenicia, Egypt, and Central Asia. The Aryan Chaldeo-Tibetan Wisdom-Religion and the trans-Himalayan Esoteric Doctrine are one and the same. The Chaldeans were a hieratic caste of Hindu-Brahmans, now called Aryans; their vernacular language was the Sanskrit of the Vedas; they instructed the Babylonians in the Mysteries and taught them the sacerdotal or Mystery-language which, even today, is used by Hindu fakirs and initiated Brahmans in their magical evocations. The population of Ur of the Chaldeans, where Magism flourished before the days of Abraham, is related with those of Central and North America. The cauldron of Christian Trinity has always been North-East of the Indus River, where the Chaldeans worshipped the trinity of Deus-Lunus manifesting in three phases, and completing the quaternary with the fourth. And since Babylonia was situated on the way of the great stream of the Hindu emigration, its peoples were the first to benefit. The Chaldæan Moon-Worship, however, is likely to mislead the profane student who fails to grasp the esoteric dimensions of archaic symbols. The pioneers of humanity’s Fifth Root-Race, the Aryan, came out of Central Asia. The so-called “Akkadians” were no more a “Turanian” race than any of the modern British people are the mythical ten tribes of Israel, so conspicuously present in the Bible and yet absent from history. Belonging virtually through their original connection with the Aryan, Central Asian stock, the old Aeolians were Atlanteans, not only in virtue of their long residence in the now submerged continent, but also by intermarriage with them. The classification of ancient nations into Akkadians, Turanians, Semites, etc., is at best arbitrary. The word “Chaldean” does not refer merely to a native or an inhabitant of Chaldea, but to “Chaldeism” itself, the oldest science of Astrology and Occultism. The Zoroastrians are the true heirs to Chaldean wisdom, “the light which shineth in darkness,” though modern “darkness comprehended it not,” though today’s Parsis know nothing of it now. The Aryan and Arhat doctrines agree perfectly in substance. The secret doctrine of the Jewish Kabbalists is merely a late offshoot of these, suggests Subba Row. As the Vedas came from the Manasarovara Lake in Tibet, and the Brahmans from the far North, the trans-Himalayan esoteric doctrine is Aryan Chaldeo-Tibetan Universal Wisdom-Religion, confirms Blavatsky. The country called Si-dzang by the Chinese, and Tibet by Western geographers, is mentioned in the oldest books preserved in the province of Fokien, as the great seat of occult learning in archaic ages. Emperor Yu the Great established a system of theocracy, the first one in China to unite ecclesiastical power with temporal authority from Si-dzang. That system was the same as that of the old Egyptians and Chaldees, has existed in the Br?hmanical period in India, and exists now in Tibet. Nebu is an abstract quality personified. It is man’s seventh and highest principle, and the synthetic attribute of Seven Chaldean Gods — the Planetary Spirits. By the powers of goodness in man and nature, the Chaldean Magi performed the most wonderful miracles. Unlike the Roman Catholics, who invented a Devil endowed with a power equalling that of the Supreme Deity, and who allegedly transforms himself into wolves, snakes, and dogs to satisfy his lust and procreate monsters. Chaldean Magic was based upon a profound knowledge of the powers of simples and minerals. It was only when the Theurgist needed divine help in spiritual and earthly matters that he sought direct communication with pure spiritual beings. To dare, to know, to will, and to remain silent, were their constant rules; to be beneficent, unselfish, and unpretending, were some of their spontaneous impulses. All the discoveries of modern Astronomy were contained within the secret observatories and Initiation Halls of the temples of old India and Egypt. It is in them that the Chaldean made his calculations, revealing to the world of the profane no more than it was fit to receive. Cyprian of Antioch, a penitent sorcerer, had studied in Chaldea the true power of the air, saw the planets as dissimilar as the plants on earth, understood that stars that were like armies ranged in battle order, and learnt the Chaldean division of Ether into 365 parts. The Kabbalah of the Jews is but the distorted echo of the Secret Doctrine of the Chaldeans, The Mysteries of the Jews are identical with those of the Pagan Greeks, who took them from the Egyptians, who borrowed them from the Chaldeans, who got them from the Aryans, from the Atlanteans, and so on, far beyond the misty days of the Fourth Race. The Greeks learned Occult Cosmology from the Egyptians, and the latter from the Chaldeans, who had been the pupils of Brahmans of the Esoteric School. A small tribe of presumably Egyptian runaway slaves obtained their primitive ideas about creation from Moses, who compiled their Genesis and first cosmogonic traditions from the Chaldeo-Akkadian account. Their Kabbalistic literature can be traced only from the time of the Captivity, yet from the Pentateuch down to the Talmud the documents of that literature were always written in a kind of Mystery-language — a series of symbolical records which the Jews had copied from the Egyptian and the Chaldean Sanctuaries, only adapting them to their own national history, if history it can be called. Hebrew is considered to be a very old language, and yet there exists no trace of it anywhere on the old monuments, not even in Chaldea. The Hebrew known to the philologists does not date earlier than 500 BC and its characters belong to a far later period still. The original and authentic Gospel of Matthew was written in the Chaldaic language but with Hebrew letters, says Jerome. The Jewish Talmudists and the Christian Fathers borrowed many occult terms, such as Virtue, Iao, Abraxas, etc., from the Chaldeans. In the Chaldean or Jewish Kabbalah, Kosmos is divided into seven worlds: Original, Intelligible, Celestial, Elementary, Lesser (Astral), Infernal (Kama-loka or Hades), and Temporal (of man). The old Chaldeans were a Brotherhood of pre-Babylonian Philosophers and Theurgists. Their knowledge and teachings emerged much later in a caste of learned Kabbalists. To sum up, the Kabbalah of the profane Jews is but the distorted echo of the Secret Doctrine of the Chaldeans. The Chaldean Book of Numbers, now in the possession of some Persian Sufis, is the only key to the real Kabbalah. If Moses knew the primitive and universal language of the Initiates, as did every Egyptian priest, and was thus acquainted with the numerical system on which it was based, he is most likely the author of Genesis and other “scrolls.” When the Asmonean period began, the chief supporters of Law were called Asideans or Kasdim (Chaldeans), and afterward Pharisees or Pharsi (Parsis). Following successive Assyrian and Persian colonisations, the early plebeian Israelites (originally Canaanites and Phoenicians) were modified to Asideans and Pharisees, and then to asserters of sacerdotal rule (Sadducees) as contradistinguished from rabbinical. The Pharisees were lenient and intellectual; the Sadducees, bigoted and cruel. With two Appendices, on “The Testimony of Theodas,” and “ Searching for the Lost Word.”

Atlantis was a global configuration of islands covering what is now the mid-Atlantic Ocean, as well as portions of the Pacific, and had islands even in the Indian Ocean. Europe and America were connected by a land passage, of which Iceland, Madeira, and the other Atlantic islands are remnants.

Atlantis and its illustrious “Fourth Race” inhabitants sunk 856,000 years ago, coinciding with the elevation of the Alps.

Titans and Cyclopes of old belonged to that Root-Race. Progressively, the human frame consolidated and symmetrised. Two front eyes developed but the “seers” sinned and lost the third. After the separation of the sexes, Karman forced the creative gods to incarnate in mindless men. Then, sight and speech developed, for language is coeval with reason. Humanity had passed the middle point in the Great Cycle. The door for further monads entering the human kingdom closed and the balance struck. Many of us are now working off the effects of the evil karmic causes produced by us in Atlantean bodies.

Prometheus is the pre-eminent Atlantean hero and philanthropist. He bestowed to animal man divine mind. But the gift was abused and became a curse. The mystery of the Fourth Race “falling” into matter explained: Angels fell but not Man.

Eminent Atlanteans are still kindling the Promethean fire. Zoroaster, Ulysses, Noah, Kabiri, Telchines, and other heroic figures are none other than mankind’s divine instructors and true benefactors.

Atlantis was a land of beautiful and strong giants. Their initiates commemorated images of the five Races in stone for the instruction of future generations. Though perfected in materiality, they degenerated in spirituality. Black magic, bestiality, selfishness, and self-adoration spelled the demise of that proud race.

If these incompetent builders of Universal History can persuade their public to accept as authoritative their chronological and ethnological reveries, why should the Eastern student, who has access to quite different and more trustworthy materials, be expected to join in the blind belief of those who defend Western historical infallibility? When the fury of critical bigotry has quite subsided, and Western men are prepared to write History in the interest of truth alone, will the proofs be found of the cyclic law of civilization. Europe has neither the Titanic and Cyclopean masonry of the Ancients, nor even its parchments to preserve the records of its “existing arts and languages.”

Before Alchemy existed as a Science, its quintessence alone acted in Nature’s correlations. The virtuous man can produce external, perceptible, phenomenal results by invoking Kriyashakti, his own inherent power of creative thought, and become a co-worker with Nature in her higher departments. Like the lightning conductor that directs the electric fluid, the force of Kriyashakti conducts the quintessence of life and gives it direction; led haphazardly, it can kill; directed by the potency of human will and magnetic force, it can create according to a predetermined plan. Poor alchemy! Star of the morning, daughter of the dawn, how fallen from thine high estate! That which once was, still is and forever shall be, even to the end of time. Words change and their meaning becomes quickly disfigured. But eternal ideas remain, and shall not pass away. The ass’ skin is congenial to the tastes of today’s philosophicules and materialistic alchemists, who sacrifice the living soul for the dead form, than revering Princess-Nature in all her nakedness. With so many would-be alchemists around, even Hermes himself would lose his way. Only High Initiates are able to unravel the jargon of Hermetic philosophers and divulge their secrets pertaining to all seven realms of nature. To the practical alchemist, whose object is the production of wealth by the special rules of his art, studying their metaphysical basis was a secondary consideration; while the Sage, who had ascended to the plane of metaphysical contemplation, would reject the material objectives of these studies as unworthy of any further consideration. The origin of alchemy is lost in the remotest antiquity of the Far East. The Chaldeans were only the heirs, first to antediluvian and later to the alchemy of the Egyptians. The Wisdom of the East no longer exists in the West; it died with the three Magi. Hermes never was the name of a man, but a generic title, just as the term Neo-Platonist was used in former times, and Theosophist is being used in the present. Even in the time of Plato, Hermes was already identified with the Thoth of the Egyptians. Thoth-Hermes is simply the personification of the Voice of the sacerdotal caste of Egypt, the Voice of the Great Hierophants. Alchemy is as old as tradition itself. The Golden Fleece was a treatise written on animal skin, explaining how gold could be made by alchemical means. There still remain underground a large number of such alchemical works, written on papyrus and buried with mummies, ten millennia old. The whole secret lies in the ability to recognise in such works what appears to be only a fairy tale, as in the golden fleece and the “romances” of the earlier Pharaohs. Explicit instructions do not come from the sanctuaries of Egypt. Most are fractionally correct interpretations of the allegorical stories of the alchemical green, blue, and yellow dragons, and the rose tigers of the Chinese. Alchemy was imported to Europe from China, transformed into Hermetic writings which were then fabricated by the old Greeks and the Arabs, and refabricated in the Middle Ages — now jumbled up and distorted beyond recognition. The two objects of the Chinese system and the Hermetic Sciences, in making gold and prolonging life, are identical. But the Eastern Adept-Initiates, despising gold and having a profound indifference for life, care very little about such selfish pursuits which, in most cases, are acts black art. The third object of alchemy, i.e., transmutation, has been wholly neglected by Christian adepts who, being satisfied with their belief in the immortality of the soul, they never properly understood the meaning of this object. The transmutation of the real alchemist is the occult process by which his debased nature and brute energy are conquered; and thus, ennobled by his highest intellectual faculties, his soul is infused into the spiritual dynamics of the Divine Will. Woe to those who seek to obtain magical powers for selfish ends and money-making under the cloak of alchemy. Alchemy is a noble philosophy, purely metaphysical. The transmutation of base metals into gold was merely an allegory for freeing man of his ancestral evils and infirmities, by redeeming the flesh below and regenerating the soul above. It is incorrect to think that there exists any special “powder of projection,” or “philosopher’s stone,” or “elixir of life.” The latter lurks in every flower, in every stone and mineral throughout the globe: it is the ultimate essence of everything on its way to higher and higher evolution. And as there is no good or evil, so there is neither “elixir of life” nor “elixir of death,” nor poison as such, but all this is contained in one and the same Universal Essence, this or the other effect, or result, depending on the degree of its differentiations and various correlations. The light side of that Essence produces life, health, bliss, divine peace, and so forth; the dark side brings death, disease, sorrow, and strife. This is demonstrated by knowing the nature of the most deadly poisons; of some of them, even a large quantity will produce no ill effect, whereas a grain of the same poison will kill with the rapidity of lightning; yet, exactly the same grain, when altered by a certain combination, will heal. Seek not the secrets of nature in nature. Know your self, first and foremost. The treasure of treasures lies in the innermost chamber of your heart, where the sunlight of truth shines with unfading glory. How can those who are fools in nature, hope to profit from alchemical works — the timeless testimonies to creative powers of Nature? Let the seeker of Truth be wary of things that are readily understood, especially mystical names and secret operations, for Truth lies hid in obscurity. Pearls of Truth cannot be given to the profane; less so today than when the Apostles were advised not to cast pearls before swine. The chemist imitates nature, the alchemist surpasses nature herself. Chemistry decomposes and recombines material substances, it purifies simple substances of foreign elements, but leaves the primitive elements unchanged. Alchemy changes the character of things, and raises them up into higher states of existence. As all the powers of the universe are potentially contained in us, our body and its organs are the representatives of the powers of nature and a constellation of the same powers that formed the stars in the sky. The physician who knows nothing of alchemy can only be a servant of nature, but the alchemist is her lord.

Western ignorance is a Hellenic inheritance, much of it the result of Hellenic vanity. See how the European Orientalist has raised himself to the eminence of a philological oracle. In ascribing chronological dates to Indian antiquities, Anglo-Indian as well as European archæologists are often guilty of the most ridiculous anachronisms. Greek chronology is too defective, too bombastic, and too diametrically opposed to fact, to inspire with confidence anyone less prejudiced than the European Orientalist. Comparative mythology bear witness that the religious ideas of the Greeks and most of their gods were derived from the religions flourishing in the northwest of India, the cradle of the main Hellenic stock. Let hypothesis prevail, even though the heavens may fall. As Yavanacharya was the Indian title of a single Greek, Pythagoras, so Shankaracharya was the title of a single Hindu philosopher. Yavanani does not mean Greek writing, it means any foreign writing. The Aryan Mahabharata and the Homeric Trojan War belong to the same cycle of events: both epics are mythical as to personal biographies and fabulous supernumeraries, yet perfectly historical in the main. The Greeks besmirched their noble ancestry by belittling their Hierophants as Troglodytes! Three Hierarchs represented Budhistical and Brahmanical power in pre-Homeric Greece. While the political power of Sri-B’dho-Lemos or Triptolemos was formidable, the cave-dwelling Budhist Priests or Sroo-cula-dutæ, Lords of the Cave, who protected their secret doctrines from profanation, are today belittled as Troglodytai. Further examples of the profound Brahmanical influence in Greece are the Goghos, or Cow-Killer, who became Kakos, i.e., bad. And Soo-Bhoo-ya, or one engaged in abstract meditation, became Sophos, i.e., Wise. Despatis or Land-Lord became Despotes, thus marking the transition from Oligarchic privilege to Democratic tyranny. Sanskrit is the Mother of Greek. As Ouranos destroyed his children from Gaia, so Kronos destroyed his from Rhea. This is an allusion to the fruitless efforts of Earth or Nature alone to create real human men. An auspicious prophecy: the Greek language will wake up once more after the Sanskrit goes to sleep. Book excerpt: The Eleusinian Mysteries were viewed as the efflorescence of all the Greek religion, as the purest essence of all its conceptions. The offering of bread and wine to the candidate by the Hierophant symbolised the spirit that was about to quicken matter: i.e., the divine wisdom of the Higher Self was to take possession of the candidate’s inner Self or Soul through what was to be revealed to him. The transformation of Cybele to Ceres-Demeter was the basis for the sacredness of bread and wine in ritualism. Cybele is the Moon-Goddess of the Athenians, Pallas or Minerva, invoked in her festivals as Monogenes Theou, the One Mother of God, and Virgin Queen of Heaven. Esoterically, Cybele is Kabeiros, a representative of the Phoenician Kingly Race. The Hierophant was always an old unmarried man. This and so many other features of the great archaic system, known as the Sacred Wisdom Science, have been appropriated by the Romish Church. One of the greatest mysteries is how the ever immaculate and yet ever prolific Divine Virgin who, fecundated by the fructifying rays of the Sun, becomes the Mother of all that lives and breathes on her vast bosom. Her very “Breath” is Akasha-tattva or Universal Essence, i.e., Vital Electricity — Life itself. The Mysteries are fragments of a grand pre-historic Philosophy, as old as the world itself. They are not only the foundation-stone of modern Philosophy, they also gave birth to hieroglyphics, as permanent records were needed to preserve and commemorate their secrets. The fact that the Sanskrit and Greek words for Initiation to the Greater Mysteries, Avapta and Epopteia, imply revelation not by human agent but by receiving the Sacred Drink, points out to the pre-Vedic origin of the Eleusinia. A cup of Kykeon, quaffed by the Mystes at the Eleusinian Initiation, forcibly connects the inner, highest “spirit” of man, which spirit is an angel like the mystical Soma, with his “irrational soul” or astral body, and thus united by the power of the magic drink, they soar together above physical nature and participate during life on earth in the beatitude and ineffable glories of Heaven. One well versed in the esoteric mythologies of various nations can trace the Mysteries back to the ante-Vedic period in India. Only those of the strictest virtue and purity were admitted. Those who consciously engaged in Black Magic or were responsible for homicide, whether accidental or not, and other evil acts were excluded. Every approach to the Mysteries was guarded with the same jealous care everywhere, and the penalty of death was inflicted upon Initiates of any degree who divulged secrets entrusted to them. Why Truth keeps hiding like a tortoise within her shell? Because Truth is too dangerous even for the highest Lanoo. No one can be entrusted with full knowledge of the Secret Science before his time. In Egypt the Mysteries had been known since the days of Menes. The Greeks received them much later when Orpheus introduced them from India. Thus, even in the days of Aristotle, few were the true Adepts left in Europe and even in Egypt. While darkness fell upon the face of the profane world, there was still eternal light in the Adyta on the nights of Initiation. Athenians, the real barbarians of Hellas, charged Æschylus with sacrilege and condemned him to be stoned to death because, they claimed, having been uninitiated, he had profaned the Mysteries by exposing them in his trilogies on a public stage. But he would have incurred the same condemnation, had he been initiated. Every truth revealed by Jesus, and which the Jews and early Christians understood, was concealed by a Church that has always pretended serving Him. To deprive the Greeks of their Sacred Mysteries, which bind in one the whole of mankind, was to render their very lives worthless to them. Blessed is he who has seen these things before he goes beneath the hollow earth; for he understands the end of mortal life, and the beginning of a new life. The Lesser grades of Eleusinia symbolised the descend of Persephone, Ceres-Demeter’s daughter, to earth and were preparatory to Greater Mysteries, when the daughter returns to her divine abode and is finally reunited with her mother. Similarly, Northern Buddhism has its “Greater” and its “Lesser” vehicle, the Mahayana or Esoteric, and the Hinayana or Exoteric School. The object of the Lesser Mysteries was to instruct the candidate about the condition of the unpurified soul invested with an earthly body, and enveloped in a material and physical nature that, until and unless purified by high philosophy and ethics, is destined to suffer pain and death through its attachment to embodied life. Selfishness is the prisoner of the divine soul. Physical body is the prison. And real hell is life here, on earth. The Book of Job is a complete representation of ancient Initiation, and the trials which generally precede this grandest of all ceremonies. Still, the cunning translators of the Hebrew Bible imply that Job’s “Champion,” “Deliverer,” and “Vindicator,” was Messiah. Nothing could be further from the truth. With the Hindus, the real Champion and Deliverer it Atman; with the Neo-Platonists, Nous Augoeides; with the Buddhists, Agra; with the Persians, Ferouer. The true Champion is the immortal spirit in every man. It alone can redeem our soul and save us from ourselves, if we follow its behests instead of squandering our divine inheritance by pandering to our lower nature. There were two classes of participants, the Neophytes and the Perfect. And two castes of Magi, the initiated and those who were allowed to officiate in the popular rites only. Neophytes first taught in upper temples were initiated in crypts. Oral instructions were given at low breath, in solemn silence and secrecy. Jesus and Paul classified their doctrines as esoteric and exoteric: The Mysteries of the Kingdom of God for the Apostles, the parables for the multitude. Aristides calls Mysteries the common temple of the earth. Epictetus says that all that is ordained therein was established by the Masters of Wisdom for the instruction of mortals and the correction of their customs. Plato asserts that the object of the Mysteries was to re-establish the soul in that state of perfection from which it had fallen. Baptism was one of the earliest Chaldeo-Akkadian rites of inner purification. Candidates were immersed thrice into water by Hydranos, the Baptist. At the Mysteries of the Anthesteria at limnai, i.e., the Feast of Flowers at the temple lakes, after the usual baptism by purification of water, the Mystai were made to pass through to the gate of Dionysus, that of the purified. After their Second Birth was accomplished, and the Mystai had returned from their baptism in the sea, the Tau or Egyptian cross was laid upon the breast. The Mysteries of the Jews were identical with those of Pagan Greeks, who took them from the Egyptians, who borrowed them from the Chaldaeans, who got them from the Aryans, who inherited them from the Atlanteans, and so on. But what Gods and Angels had revealed, exoteric religions, beginning with that of Moses, reviled, reveiled, and hid for ages from the sight of the world. The lure of lucre was the final nail in the coffin of the Eleusinia. An Athenian demagogue and sycophant, whose eloquence was described as of a coarse and vehement character, degraded the Sacred Mysteries by persuading the State to levy a charge for those seeking admission to higher life. Thus initiation had become a commodity — and as necessary as baptism has since become with the Christians. The first hour for the demise of the Mysteries struck on the clock of the Races with the Macedonian conqueror. The first strokes of its last hour sounded 47 BCE in the Thebes of the Celts. But the Mysteries of Eleusis could not be so easily disposed of. They were indeed the religion of mankind, and shone in all their ancient splendour if not in their primitive purity. It took several centuries to abolish them, and they could not be entirely suppressed before the year 396 of our era. The Eleusinian Mysteries were archaic Wisdom-Religion dressed in Greek garb. Prehistoric Greece was colonised by two great Indian races, the Solar and the Lunar dynasties. Springing up from the kingdoms of Cashmir and Tibet, the prehistoric colonists of Greece consisted of the two great primitive and radical races of Aryavarta, the Solar or ancient Budhistic dynasty (Surya Vansa), and the Lunar dynasty (Chandra Vansa). The former were the earliest settlers in Greece and their religious exponents appear to have been the Dodan, or Brahmanical priests of the great tribe, Doda. As history progressed, the original Lamaic system of religion has been so much modified and so far compromised, as to be compelled to seek refuge in the asyla of the Grecian Mysteries, instead of the state-position it once occupied. Inside Greece, Bacchus was a prosonym of Zagreus, the successor of the Lamaic sovereignty in whose service was Orpheus, the founder of the Mysteries. Outside Greece, Bacchus was the Tartarian Jupiter Hammon whose Lamaic worship accompanied the emigrants of Tartary to Egypt. In Budhistic belief, the young Lama is born again from the consort of the Jaina Pontiff, Semele or Su-Lamee, the Great Lama Queen. The Eleuth-Chiefs, who spread the Lamaic doctrines in the Attic territory, became Eleusine. Their forms of worship and Tartar ceremonials composed the staple of the celebrated Eleusinian Mysteries. The high-born Brahmans or Culini lived on the Peloponnesian Mount Cyllene. The Mysteries were communicated to Culyus-Celeus, ruler of the land of the Rarhya, by Demeter herself. Yet the Greeks besmirched their noble ancestry by belittling their Hierophants as troglodytes. Three Hierarchs represented Budhistical and Brahmanical power. Two orders of priests officiated over the initiations. The descendants of the High Budha Priest or Eumolpidai, and the Budhist Keerukos or Keryx, the sacred herald of the Greeks, the latter aided by the daughters of the late Eleusinian high-caste king Culyus or Celeus. Modern Greek authors who treat Eleusinian worship as mysteries, rather than the old national form of worship, name those admitted to the Lesser Mysteries as Mokshtai or Mystai, from the Budhist word Moksha. After taking an oath of secrecy to preserve the old religion of the country against the more attractive heresy of Homer and his popular gods, those admitted to the Greater Mysteries were styled avapta or epoptai. Iacchos (Bacchos), properly Yogin, who appeared on the sixth day of the Mysteries, is none other than Dio Nausho or Dionysos, son of the Jaina Pontiff (Jeyus), and the Great Lama Queen, Soo Lamee or Semele. Couros, a prosonym of Iacchos, is Gooros or Guru, a spiritual teacher. Hence, Demeter is styled by the Greeks Couro-trophos or Guru-nurse. Erectheus-Poseidon was worshipped jointly with Athene and is identified with Poseidon or Po-Sidhan, Prince of all Saints, Chief of Saidan, and Prince of Sidon. Saidan, Eracland, and Phœnicia, are in close proximity to Afghanistan; Sidan is repeated in the Phœnicia of Palestine. Poseidon was worshipped jointly with Adheene, the Virgin Queen of Heaven, modified by the Greeks as Athene. She is the Egyptian Neeti, corruptly written Neith. The mysterious name of Onge-Athene was also derived from AUM, the Triple Fire representing the highest Tetraktys.

These sacred symbols have never been so degraded by antiquity as they are now, in this age of the breaking of idols, not for truth’s sake but to glorify gross matter. In the beginning of their joint existence as a glyph of Immortal Being, the Tree and Serpent were divine imagery, truly. In the days of the divine Dynasties on Earth, the now dreaded reptile, emblem of the heaven-born Logos, was regarded as the first beam of light that radiated from the abyss of Divine Mystery. As the Serpent, originally dwelling beyond absolute space and infinite time, fell into the space and finite time, he was made to assume various forms: cosmic and astronomical, theistic and pantheistic, abstract and concrete. There is a universal belief that serpents are wise, cunning, and fascinating. The dragons and serpents of antiquity are seven-headed, one head for each root-race. The Crocodile is the Egyptian Dragon, the pre-planetary form of Saturn, Sevekh’s Word-Logos. He was the dual symbol of Heaven and Earth, of Sun and Moon, made sacred to Osiris and Isis because of its amphibious nature. The Serpent was degraded as the symbol of evil and devil, only during the middle ages, when the Sun, Tree, Serpent, Crocodile, and other ancient symbols were imported wholesale by dogmatic Christianity and passed in full into the Christian Church. The “True and Perfect Serpent,” the Dark Serpent of Absolute Wisdom of the Ophite creed, is the seven-vowelled God, represented by the Swastika — the seven-fold androgyne Logos unfolding out of its own essence the faculties and powers latent in Saptaparna, the seven-leaved Man-plant.

Book excerpt: The antiquity and universality of the Zodiac can be traced back to the earliest Theogonies. It was not the Greeks who invented the Zodiac, for the simple reason that they did not yet exist as a nation thirty-seven centuries B.C. The dodecahedron is a perfect number and one among many signs of the Zodiac that the Sun visits in twelve months. It was in honour of that sign that Moses divided his nation into twelve symbolical tribes. Berosus predicted future events by the Zodiac; and the time fixed by him for the conflagration of the world, and another for a deluge, comes at every renewal of the cycle of the sidereal year of 25,868 years. The Hindus date their Kali-Yuga from the great periodical conjunction of the planets at 3,100 before the birth of Christ. Diogenes Laërtius carried back the astronomical calculations of the Egyptians to 48,683 years before Alexander the Great. The cycle of Initiation was a reproduction in miniature of that great series of Cosmic changes to which astronomers have given the name of tropical or sidereal year. Just as, at the close of the cycle of the sidereal year (25,868 mortal years), the heavenly bodies return to the same relative positions as they occupied at its outset, so at the close of the cycle of Initiation the inner man may regain the pristine state of divine purity and knowledge, from which he set out on his cycle of terrestrial incarnations. The connection of the twelve Jewish patriarchs with the Zodiac is a tacit “divine” recognition of the “chosen people of God,” whose finger has purposely traced in heaven, from the beginning of creation, the numbers of these patriarchs. Even the banners of these tribes are claimed to have exhibited the same symbols as those of the zodiacal signs. In the universe of differentiated matter everything is mathematically co-ordinated and mutually related in its units. Replace God with of Karma, and he will become an Eastern axiom. Why see in the Pisces a direct reference to Jesus, one of several world-reformers, when that constellation shines as a symbol of all past, present, and future Spiritual Saviours who dispense light and dispel mental darkness? The Jews had evidently and undeniably borrowed their chronology from the Chaldeans, along with their gods. Of the 432,000 years of the Chaldean divine Dynasties they made 4,320 lunar years from the world’s creation to the Christian era; as to the Babylonian and Egyptian Gods, they transformed them as quietly and modestly into Patriarchs. The Zodiac existed hundreds of million of years before the Christian era. Each planetary conjunction is a climacteric year of humanity. All Sun-gods had been mystically connected with the constellation of Taurus, which was called “the great city of God and mother of revelations” and “the interpreter of the divine voice.” The ansated Egyptian cross or Tau, the Jaina cross or Svastika, and the Christian cross have all the same meaning. No peoples or nations, except the Christians, gave the significance to the Dragon that is given to it now. The Serpent was the symbol of Wisdom; and the Taurus, sacred in every Cosmogony, the symbol of physical or terrestrial generation. It was from the Hindu systems of astronomy that the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, and even the Jews derived their knowledge. It is the antiquity of the nations of the East which has erected their scientific fame. For patience accumulated knowledge; and prolonged experience produced wisdom. Time itself was their teacher; they knew the motions of the heavenly bodies during these intervals because they had seen them; and the duration of the Hindu people on earth is the cause of the fidelity of its records and the accuracy of its calculations. The descent and re-ascent of the human soul cannot be disconnected from the Zodiacal signs, and it feels more natural to believe in the mysterious sympathy between the metaphysical soul and the bright constellations, and in the influence of the latter on the former, than in the absurd notion that the creators of Heaven and Earth have placed in Heaven the types of twelve vicious Jews. In esoteric philosophy Patriarchs are the progenitors of the human race, the “Mind-born Sons” of Brahmā. They are the nursery and fountainhead of human beings. This is the occult meaning of the Biblical Patriarchs, of their genealogy, and of their descendants dividing among themselves the earth. First 7 are mentioned, then 10, 21, and so on. The Jewish Patriarchs were pastors, not priests.

The Chaldees were at the apex of their Occult fame well before the so-called “Bronze Age.” The highest people now on earth, in terms of spirituality, belong to the first sub-race of the Fifth Root-race — the Aryan Asiatics. The highest, in terms of physical intellectuality, are those of the last sub-race of the Fifth, the “White Conquerors.” Black magic, bestiality, selfishness, and self-adoration spelled the demise of Atlantis and the rise of evil. The British Islands will be the first to be destroyed by submarine volcanos and water; France and other lands will follow suit. When they reappear, very few seas and great waters will be found then on our globe. The approach of every new obscuration is always signalled by cataclysms, earthquakes, and fire. Though perfected in materiality, the Atlanteans degenerated in spirituality. Atlantis and its proud Fourth Race inhabitants sunk , years ago, coinciding with the elevation of the Alps. When our present race reaches its zenith of intellectuality, and its peak of materialistic “civilization,” unable to go any higher towards absolute evil, its progress will be arrested by one of such cataclysmic changes; and it’s sub-races will go down their respective cycles, after a short period of glory and learning. See the remnants of the Atlanteans, the old Greeks and Romans, how great, how short, and how evanescent were their days of fame and glory! Every race had its adepts, who are allowed to give out as much of their knowledge as the men of that race deserve. The adepts of the last race will be far higher than any of the preceding races, for among them will abide the future Planetary Spirit, whose duty will be to instruct or “refresh the memory” of the first race of the Fifth Round men after this planet’s future obscuration.

Though man cannot escape his ruling destiny, he has the choice of two paths. His destiny has been written in the stars by himself. Therefore, no heavenly body can influence the human destiny. Being self-made, man weaves his own destiny and reaps what he has sown. The real Dweller on the Threshold is no monster, it is the despair and despondency of the neophyte. The candidate to initiation is tempted and tormented by his own unmastered passions. Any latent proclivities are drawn out by reformed Brothers of the Shadow, working for the Brothers of Light. More! Undissipated passions from the previous incarnation can dwell on the lower mental plane of the next one. Man’s true star is a Dhyani-Buddha, his Augoeides. Augoeides is the Master within, luciform and pure. Those of pure heart can rely upon their Master’s guidance and protection.

Rosicrucians no longer exist, the last of that fraternity having departed in the person of Cagliostro. Occultism is a double-edged weapon for one who is unprepared to devote his whole life to it. The theory of it, unaided by serious practice, will always remain a foolish and ignorant speculation. He who rejects the immortality of man’s soul cannot perceive the unity of homogeneity of his Creator through the plurality of heterogeneity, and he therefore condemns himself to live hand-by-hand with death in the “vale of tears.” Any attempt to learn about Occultism by book study alone will always prove insufficient — even to the analytical mind trained to extract the quintessence of truth scattered throughout myriads of contradictory statements — unless supported by practice and experience. As primitive Christianity split into numerous sects, so the science of Occultism gave birth to a variety of doctrines and brotherhoods. For example, the Egyptian Ophites, became the Christian Gnostics, shooting forth the Basilideans of the second century. And the original Rosicrucians, created the Paracelsists or Fire-Philosophers, the European Alchemists, and other branches of their sect. The Brotherhood of the Rosy Cross was not founded until the middle of the thirteenth century, by Christian Rosenkreuz — a reformed sorcerer. The Rosicrucians gave birth to the early Theosophists, at whose head was Paracelsus, and to the Alchemists, one of the most celebrated of whom was Thomas Vaughan who wrote the most practical things on Occultism, under the name of Eugenius Philalethes. The Welsh Alchemist was definitely “made before he became.” Unlike the European Rosicrucians who, in order “to become and not be made,” have struggled alone, violently robbing Nature of her secrets, the Oriental “Rosicrucians” in the serene beatitude of their divine knowledge, are ever ready to help the earnest student struggling “to become” with practical knowledge, which dissipates like a heavenly breeze the darkest clouds of sceptical doubt. Whereas the lofty principles and doctrines of Christ and Buddha were calculated to embrace the whole of humanity, Confucius confined his attention solely to his own countrymen without troubling his head about the rest of mankind. Intensely Chinese in patriotism and views, his philosophical doctrines are as much devoid of the purely poetic element, which characterizes the teachings of Christ and Buddha, as the religious tendencies of his people lack in that spiritual exaltation which we find, for instance, in India. Confucius did not have the depth of feeling and spiritual striving of his contemporary, Lao-tzu. The heavy, childish, cold, sensual nature of the Chinese explains the peculiarities of their history. Marginal are the differences between the Rosicrucian and the Oriental Kabbalah. American Spiritualism, which has proved such a sore in the side of the materialists, will soon become a science of mathematical certitude, instead of being regarded only as the crazy delusion of epileptic monomaniacs. The Zohar is an inexhaustible mine of hidden wisdom and mystery for all subsequent Kabbalists. All recent Kabbalahs are copies of the God’s Splendour. While the Oriental Kabbalah remained in its pure primitive shape, the Mosaic or Jewish one is full of drawbacks, and with the keys to many secrets purposely misinterpreted. If the primitive Rosicrucians learned their first lessons of wisdom from Oriental Masters, that was not so with their direct descendants, the Paracelsists: the Kabbalah of the latter Illuminati degenerated into the twin sister of the Jewish. The custodians of the real Kabbalah of primitive humanity are certain Oriental philosophers. Their location will not be revealed until the day when humanity shall awake from its spiritual lethargy, and open its blind eyes to the dazzling rays of Truth. Thus the light of Truth will finally dissipate the unhealthy mists of the battalions of religious sects which disgrace our times. They will warm up and recall into new life the millions of wretched souls, who shiver and are half frozen under the icy hand of deadly scepticism. Occultism without practice will ever be like the statue of Pygmalion that no one can animate without infusing into it a spark of the Sacred Divine Fire. The Jewish Kabbalah, the only authority of the European Occultist, is based on the secret meanings of the Hebrew scriptures, which afford no hope for the adepts to solve them practically. More! The likelihood of anyone becoming a practical Kabbalist-Rosicrucian through studying the Jewish Kabbalah single-handed, without being initiated and so being “made” such by someone who “knows,” is as foolish as to hope to thread the Cretan labyrinth without a clue, or to open the secret locks of the ingenious inventors of the mediaeval ages, without having possession of the keys. The Seventh Rule of the Rosicrucian “who became but was not made” has its secret meaning, like every other phrase left by the Kabbalists to posterity. The Rosicrucian has to struggle alone and toil long years in the hope of finding out some of the lesser secrets of the great Kabbalah. His mental, moral, and physical fitness will be tested to the extreme. His spirit will have to pass through the ordeal of incarnation and life, and be baptised with matter before he could attain inner knowledge. There is nothing new under the Sun. There is not a science, nor a modern discovery in any section of it, which was not known to the Oriental Occultists of the hoary antiquity. What would not modern physicians, practitioners of their blind and lame science of medicine, give for a part of the knowledge of botany and plants! The hope of finding remnants of such wisdom as Ancient Asia possessed, ought to tempt our conceited modern science to explore that territory assiduously. Religions and sciences, laws and customs, they are all the direct products of Oriental Occultism, disguised by the hand of time, and palmed upon us under new pseudonyms. The time is near when the old superstitions and the errors of centuries will be swept away by the hurricane of Truth. There is scarcely a rite or ceremony of the Christian Church that does not descend from Occultism.
