  • Author : Howard McCarthy
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2020-01-21
  • ISBN : 179607909X
  • Pages : 687 pages

Download or read book Isaiah written by Howard McCarthy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a historical novel. It is inspired by the life of Isaiah Dorman. It has to be a historical novel because there is virtually no information about his early life as a slave on the Louisiana plantation where he was believed to have been born. Also, there is only sketchy information on his time spent with the Santee Sioux, and there is only basic information about his years working with the Army. However, all the information about the life of a slave on a cotton and rice plantation during his lifetime has been meticulously researched as has been the life of the Santee Sioux during that time period. The historical events are also factual and well researched. The book is written in three parts: The Slaves, The Sioux, and The Soldiers. The Slave portion deals with Isaiah’s life on the plantation until he ran away in his early twenties. This section explores his early years; his relationship with his parents, peers and his attitudes about being a slave. The period with the Santee Sioux explores his life with this tribe and his relationship with the warriors and other members of the tribe. It also tells how he met his wife and about their life together. His time with the Army is detailed up until the time he met his death on June 25, 1876 scouting for General Custer at the battle of the Little Bighorn. The Aftermath deals with what transpired after with the Sioux and African Americans in the years after the battle.

And each victim must provide the name of the next to die. Lee is pulled into this horrifying abyss when her niece is savagely raped. While she loves her niece, the idea of Mindy being held down captivates her imagination and she’s unable to force the images from her mind. The allure of sexual assault becomes an addiction: Books, movies, a survivors’ forum. Using a police scanner, she is always first at a rape crimescene. However, she notices a redhead who haunts the same backstreets and eventually chases her down. But the stranger is not intimidated by their confrontation. “It’s obvious who you are,” the woman says. “And what you are. You may deny it, but you choose to walk the dark side. You look for despair where others seek happiness. You prefer to move among tormented souls. You have come to realize that the very best sex is taken; not given.” Lee thought she was the only one, but she learns that there are others who live in the shadows – the Angels of Darkness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens’s story of selfless Little Nell and her ailing grandfather and their persecution by the magnificently malignant villain Quilp has seized the imaginations and wrung the hearts of generations of readers. Dickens’s talent was superabundant in every way: in his dramatic force and his massive productivity, in his almost surreal comic power, in his compassion and thirst for justice, and in the imaginative pressure he brought to bear on even the most incidental of his characters. The delightfully various figures in The Old Curiosity Shop range memorably from jaunty Dick Swiveller and his little half-starved Marchioness to the hard-hearted siblings Sampson and Sally Brass, jovial Mrs. Jarley, devoted Kit Nubbles, the hunchbacked Daniel Quilp, and, of course, tragic Little Nell herself. Dickens’s depiction of the fate of his main characters is famously harrowing and unfailingly suspenseful, but not the least of its charms is that it is embellished with a supporting cast of figures as grotesque and colorful as anything in the Old Curiosity Shop itself. This edition reprints the original Everyman’s preface by G. K. Chesterton and features seventy-five illustrations by Cattermole and Phiz.
