Book Cerith Wyn Evans

Download or read book Cerith Wyn Evans written by Cerith Wyn Evans and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue accompanies the eponymous exhibition at TBA21-Augarten in Vienna and brings together threads and voices of leading contemporary artists, scientists, and theoreticians exploring Cerith Wyn Evans's polyphonic oeuvre. A reality where matter meets dark matter, where the existence of a new elementary particle is conjured from theory--like an alternative world unlocked by psychotropic drugs--and results in the most complex experimental facilities ever built, brings us to the heart of Wyn Evans's new work at the Augarten, A Community Predicated on the Basic Fact Nothing Really Matters, but also figures as a conceptual model for the publication. CERN--the European Laboratory for Particle Physics--is devoted to the detection of a particle of the most labile and liminal nature, the Higgs boson. The Higgs is an afterthought, the materialization of wishful thinking: the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is constructed entirely on the fiction of a simulated projection of the missing particle whose necessity was postulated long before its discovery. A Community Predicated on the Basic Fact Nothing Really Matters centers on the Higgs on the one hand and the formula for LSD on the other, both containing the potential of generating new worlds. Book excerpt: "I had to come up with a "title", and I thought: 'Oh, God. Where do you begin?' The set of references becomes like an endless chain. In this very Klossowskian way there is this notion of the dematerialisation of the proper noun."--Cerith Wyn Evans The Welsh artist Cerith Wyn Evans (*1958) eludes easy categorization: in the mid-eighties, he worked as an assistant to the film director Derek Jarman, making both experimental films and music videos for pop bands such as The Smiths and The Fall; he also was a tutor for six years at the Architectural Association. During the 1990s, he consolidated an international reputation as an artist unafraid to embrace highly complex conceptual issues of communication and perception, with dense textual references invariably spliced with a poetically tongue- in-cheek dandyism, whether the writings of William Blake flashed in Morse code off a disco ball; a homage to Pasolini written in fireworks or the cultivation of hybrid orchids in a Parisian gallery, nourished by the artist's own urine. "Cerith Wyn Evans" accompanied the artist's solo show at the Frankfurter Kunstverein and provides a comprehensive overview of the artist's body of work. Contributors Juliane Rebentisch, Andreas Spiegl, Jan Verwoert, interview by Manfred Hermes

Book excerpt: So far, the work of Austrian artist Peter Friedl (*1960) has managed to elude stylistic classification. Investigating the social, political, and cultural realities at work in institutionalized practice, his projects have been called "conceptual, aesthetic acts"--usually they are subtle forays into institutional criticism with political insight. Four or Five Roses continues Friedl's exploration of the stereotypical language of the monologue genre. The book contains some 45 children's "monologues," edited by the artist from numerous interviews and conversations recorded on playgrounds in South Africa. Faithfully transcribed and translated into English from different South African languages (Afrikaans, Northern and Southern Suthu, Zulu, Xhosa...), the "edited monologue" then becomes a hybrid genre, both fictionalised speech and serious counter-voice. What is ultimately at stake is how discursive strategies operate as a political tool, endlessly reshaped and manipulated for the sake of persuasion. The texts are accompanied by color illustrations of the actual South African playgrounds.

Book Ground Zero

Download or read book Ground Zero written by Isa Genzken and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication, styled as a magazine, presents a new body of work, architectural proposals for Ground Zero, the twenty first centurys most historically significant site. These proposals take the form of architecturally induced sculptures produced in consultation with a specialist team of engineers so that each model can be realised its true architectural scale. Running contrary to official designs, Genzken envisages buildings with a social purpose a church, hospital, car park, disco, memorial and shopping centre. Her proposals draw upon the artists long-standing love affair with Americas breathtaking cityscapes and all pervasive culture. With its glitzy, seductive surfaces, slim rectangular forms and frenetic energy, the work betrays a fascination with the skyscraper. New York represents a vital source of energy that Genzken returns to again and again and which is intrinsically related to what she does: To me New York has a direct link with sculpture. Consisting of brightly coloured fabrics, outdoor parasols, sheet steel, mirror tile, saccharine photographs of animals and a plethora of household chintz, Genzkens output is ultimately precarious: a hedonistic concoction in which clashing elements congregate and collide. For over thirty years she has developed a radically variegated career that refuses to let the viewer know what to expect.

Book excerpt: Humanity's place in the natural order is under scrutiny as never before, held in a precarious balance between visible and invisible forces: from the microscopic threat of a virus to the monumental power of climate change. Drawing on indigenous traditions from the Amazon rainforest; alternative perspectives on Western scientific rationalism; and new thinking around plant intelligence, philosophy and cultural theory, The Botanical Mind Online investigates the significance of the plant kingdom to human life, consciousness and spirituality across cultures and through time. It positions the plant as both a universal symbol found in almost every civilisation and religion across the globe, and the most fundamental but misunderstood form of life on our planet. This new online project has been developed in response to the COVID-19 crisis and the closure of our galleries due to the pandemic. 'The Botanical Mind: Art, Mysticism and The Cosmic Tree' was originally conceived as a trans-generational group exhibition, but has been postponed. In the meantime, we have launched this complimentary online programme of new artist commissions, podcasts, films, texts, images and audio, expanding on and enriching the ideas and issues informing the show over at botanicalmind.online ... During this period of enforced stillness, our behaviour might be seen to resonate with plants: like them we are now fixed in one place, subject to new rhythms of time, contemplation, personal growth and transformation. Millions of years ago plants chose to forego mobility in favour of a life rooted in place, embedded in a particular context or environment. The life of a plant is one of constant, sensitive response to its environment - a process of growth, problem-solving, nourishment and transformation, played out at speeds and scales very different to our own. In this moment of global crisis and change there has perhaps never been a better moment to reflect on and learn from them.--https://camdenartcentre.org/the-botanical-mind-online/

Book Everyone s Gone to the Movies Now We re Alone at Last

Download or read book Everyone s Gone to the Movies Now We re Alone at Last written by Cerith Wyn Evans and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White Cube Mason's Yard was pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Cerith Wyn Evans. Taking its title from a song by Steely Dan, 'Everyone's Gone To The Movies' (1975), Wyn Evans created two major installations that transformed the gallery spaces, engaging the viewer through the interaction of light, sound and reflection.Suspended in the ground floor gallery was 'C=O=N=S=T=E=L=L=A=T=I=O=N (I call your image to mind)' a polyphonic sound mobile adapted from a series of 'audio spotlights' by the American holosonic inventor Joseph Pompei. Suspended in tiers, sixteen mirrored discs gently rotate in mid-air, transmitting directional, ultra-sonic beams of sound. This consists of a multi-layered soundtrack or sound collage created by Wyn Evans using various audio sources amongst which are his own piano arrangements and field recordings gathered by the Lovell radio telescope in Jodrell Bank.
