Book Ceramic Matrix Composites

Book excerpt: Materials science and engineering (MS&E) is by its very nature an inter disciplinary activity. Researchers from a wide variety of disciplines, metal lurgy, ceramics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, electrical and electronic engineering, etc. can and do participate in the MS&E activities. The need and desirability of such an interdisciplinary effort is understandable inas much as advanced or high-performance materials are critical for any of the modern industries. It is almost a given axiom that progress in any field (energy, building materials, transportation, electronics, aerospace, electric power, consumer products, etc.) depends on the availability of suitable In this regard, let me quote from materials having specific characteristics. another work of mine: It is a truism that technological development depends on advances in the field of materials. One does not have to be an expert to realize that a most advanced turbine or aircraft design is of no use if adequate materials to bear the service loads and conditions are not available. Whatever the field may be, the final limitation on advancement depends on materials [1]. It is pertinent to quote from some other sources about a fundamental change that is occurring in the materials field: A fundamental reversal in the relationship between human beings and materials [has occurred]. Its economic consequences are likely to be profound. Historically humans have adapted such natural materials as stone, wood, clay, vegetable fiber and animal tissue to economic uses.

Book Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book Ceramic Matrix Composites written by I M Low and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-25 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of engineering-designed polymer matrix composites in the late 1940s has provided an impetus for the emergence of sophisticated ceramic matrix composites. The development of CMCs is a promising means of achieving lightweight, structural materials combining high temperature strength with improved fracture toughness, damage tolerance and thermal shock resistance. Considerable research effort is being expended in the optimisation of ceramic matrix composite systems, with particular emphasis being placed on the establishment of reliable and cost-effective fabrication procedures. Ceramic matrix composites consists of a collection of chapters reviewing and describing the latest advances, challenges and future trends in the microstructure and property relationship of five areas of CMCs. Part one focuses on fibre, whisker and particulate-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, part two explores graded and layered ceramics, while the five chapters in part three cover nanostructured CMCs in some detail. Refractory and speciality ceramic composites are looked at in part four, with chapters on magnesia-spinel composite refractory materials, thermal shock of CMCs and superplastic CMCs. Finally, part four is dedicated to non-oxide ceramic composites. Ceramic matrix composites is a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects of the interdependence of processing, microstructure, properties and performance of each of the five categories of CMC, with chapters from experienced and established researchers. It will be essential for researchers and engineers in the field of ceramics and more widely, in the field of inorganic materials. Looks at the latest advances, challenges and future trends Compiled by experienced and established researchers in the field Essential for researchers and engineers

Book excerpt: This text brings together the technical elements needed to engineer ceramic matrix composites for aerospace and other applications. It also explains the technical data that regulates all phases of ceramic composite processing. A major feature of the book is to show how variables in reinforcements, fabrication techniques, and materials affect the properties and quality level of ceramic composites, thereby offering a path forward for design engineers. It shows what materials work best, how fabric reinforcements should be configured, and the pros and cons of PIP, CVI, and MI. Mathematically, detailed guidance is given on how to model CMCs. To complement modeling, a full spectrum of test methods is provided, including ways to determine time-dependent behavior under loading conditions.

Book Environmental Barrier Coatings

Download or read book Environmental Barrier Coatings written by Kang N. Lee and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global increase in air travel will require commercial vehicles to be more efficient than ever before. Advanced engine hot section materials are a key technology required to keep fuel consumption and emission to a minimum in next-generation gas turbines. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are the most promising material to revolutionize gas turbine hot section materials technology because of their excellent high‐temperature properties. Rapid surface recession due to volatilization by water vapor is the Achilles heel of CMCs. Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) is an enabling technology for CMCs, since it protects CMCs from water vapor. The first CMC component entered into service in 2016 in a commercial engine, and more CMC components are scheduled to follow within the next few years. One of the most difficult challenges to CMC components is EBC durability, because failure of EBC leads to a rapid reduction in CMC component life. Key contributors to EBC failure include recession, oxidation, degradation by calcium‐aluminum‐magnesium silicates (CMAS) deposits, thermal and thermo‐mechanical strains, particle erosion, and foreign object damage (FOD). Novel EBC chemistries, creative EBC designs, and robust processes are required to meet EBC durability challenges. Engine-relevant testing, characterization, and lifing methods need to be developed to improve EBC reliability. The aim of this Special Issue is to present recent advances in EBC technology to address these issues. In particular, topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: • Novel EBC chemistries and designs; • Processing including plasma spray, suspension plasma spray, solution precursor plasma spray, slurry process, PS-PVD, EB-PVD, and CVD; • Testing, characterization, and modeling; • Lifing.
