Book Women Entrepreneurs and the Global Environment for Growth

Download or read book Women Entrepreneurs and the Global Environment for Growth written by Candida G. Brush and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's entrepreneurship research and the understanding of factors influencing the growth of women-owned business advanced significantly over the last decade. Yet, challenges remain. Women Entrepreneurs and the Global Environment for Growth provides wide-ranging insights on the challenges women entrepreneurs face growing their businesses and how these may be addressed. This volume is rooted in research and considers growth challenges both contextually and firm specific, provoking current thought and enriching the current literature on gender and entrepreneurship. Part one highlights how contextual factors, and especially social and familial settings of entrepreneurs, have a differential impact on men and women. Part two examines strategies, constraints and enablers of growth and performance. The authors aptly demonstrate that a well-focused gender lens is necessary to better explain the phenomenon of women's entrepreneurship. Extending previous studies about women's entrepreneurship, this volume is unique in its application of research from the Diana Project, a path breaking initiative dating from 1999 to study female entrepreneurial success. Contributions from an international cast of authors make this a comprehensive and broadly appealing reference work.

Book Change Forces With A Vengeance

Download or read book Change Forces With A Vengeance written by Michael Fullan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-27 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change Forces With a Vengeance is the third in the chaos theory trilogy (now called complexity theory). The first two books focused on understanding the real complexity of educational reform in action. This book pushes even deeper by providing new insights and lessons of change concerning moral purpose, and what is called tri-level reform - the school and community, the local district and the state. It draws on reform initiatives across many levels and countries so that the ideas are grounded in the reality of actual projects and findings. Change Forces With a Vengeance is different from the previous two books in one major respect. Instead of being content with understanding complex system dynamics, it takes up the more daunting question of how systems can be changed for the better. How can we achieve large-scale reform and do it in a way that the conditions for sustainability are enhanced? What policy levers are needed, and what is the smallest number of sets of policies that will maximise impact? What is the role of new leadership in accomplishing sustainable, comprehensive reform? These questions and more are addressed in ways that are both deeply theoretical, and powerfully practical.

Book Only the Super Rich Can Save Us

Download or read book Only the Super Rich Can Save Us written by Ralph Nader and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2009-09-22 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the cozy den of the large but modest house in Omaha where he has lived since he started on his first billion, Warren Buffett watched the horrors of Hurricane Katrina unfold on television in early September 2005. . . . On the fourth day, he beheld in disbelief the paralysis of local, state, and federal authorities unable to commence basic operations of rescue and sustenance, not just in New Orleans, but in towns and villages all along the Gulf Coast. . . He knew exactly what he had to do. . ." So begins the vivid fictional account by political activist and bestselling author Ralph Nader that answers the question, "What if?" What if a cadre of superrich individuals tried to become a driving force in America to organize and institutionalize the interests of the citizens of this troubled nation? What if some of America's most powerful individuals decided it was time to fix our government and return the power to the people? What if they focused their power on unionizing Wal-Mart? What if a national political party were formed with the sole purpose of advancing clean elections? What if these seventeen superrich individuals decided to galvanize a movement for alternative forms of energy that will effectively clean up the environment? What if together they took on corporate goliaths and Congress to provide the necessities of life and advance the solutions so long left on the shelf by an avaricious oligarchy? What could happen? This extraordinary story, written by the author who knows the most about citizen action, returns us to the literature of American social movements—to Edward Bellamy, to Upton Sinclair, to John Steinbeck, to Stephen Crane—reminding us in the process that changing the body politic of America starts with imagination.

Book Searching for a Corporate Savior

Download or read book Searching for a Corporate Savior written by Rakesh Khurana and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate CEOs are headline news. Stock prices rise and fall at word of their hiring and firing. Business media debate their merits and defects as if individual leaders determined the health of the economy. Yet we know surprisingly little about how CEOs are selected and dismissed or about their true power. This is the first book to take us into the often secretive world of the CEO selection process. Rakesh Khurana's findings are surprising and disturbing. In recent years, he shows, corporations have increasingly sought CEOs who are above all else charismatic, whose fame and force of personality impress analysts and the business media, but whose experience and abilities are not necessarily right for companies' specific needs. The labor market for CEOs, Khurana concludes, is far less rational than we might think. Khurana's findings are based on a study of the hiring and firing of CEOs at over 850 of America's largest companies and on extensive interviews with CEOs, corporate board members, and consultants at executive search firms. Written with exceptional clarity and verve, the book explains the basic mechanics of the selection process and how hiring priorities have changed with the rise of shareholder activism. Khurana argues that the market for CEOs, which we often assume runs on cool calculation and the impersonal forces of supply and demand, is culturally determined and too frequently inefficient. Its emphasis on charisma artificially limits the number of candidates considered, giving them extraordinary leverage to demand high salaries and power. It also raises expectations and increases the chance that a CEO will be fired for failing to meet shareholders' hopes. The result is corporate instability and too little attention to long-term strategy. The book is a major contribution to our understanding of corporate culture and the nature of markets and leadership in general.

Book Using the Power of Purpose

Download or read book Using the Power of Purpose written by Dean E. Tucker and published by Author House. This book was released on 2008-04-07 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about three challenges facing business today. First is the coming huge labor shortage as Baby Boomer Generation retires. For every 5 Boomers that retire, there will only be 4 Generation X or Yers to replace them. The second challenge is that Generations X and Y will be difficult to attract and retain because these generations: 1. Are not loyal to companies and do not trust management. 2. Demand balance between their personal and professional lives. 3. Do not fear losing a job. 4. Will quit when management or the work environment is not to their liking. These generations are not intimidated by management and will not put up with the management by fear techniques used in many companies today. If they are not treated with respect, provided with flexibility in hours and scheduling or do not like their manager, they will quickly leave. The third challenge is the fact the arrival of the information age has rendered the profit driven Bureaucratic Management System (which was created between 1850 and 1920) obsolete. It is inefficient and cumbersome when dealing with the issues of adaptability, teamwork, employee empowerment, productivity and innovation that are needed today’s business environment. For example, the Bureaucratic Management System is designed to resist change and maintain the status quo, but the need today is for rapid adaptability so that business can be responsive to the ever changing demands of the customer. Is there a solution for these challenges? The answer is emphatically YES! The solution is to overcome bureaucracy by transitioning to a new information-age purpose-driven business model and achieve extraordinary levels of productivity and financial success. See how over 50 companies have utilized the power of purpose to outperform their peers by a factor of 6 to 1!
