Book excerpt: To celebrate its sesquicentennial, Central (1858-2008) has gathered a collection of histories, memories and musings from its members as well as former staff and their families. The result is a colorful patchwork quilt of both research and recollection that captures this venerable Atlanta congregation's rich array of ministries, programs and activities through the years. Members and visitors alike receive a warm welcome at Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta--a church well known for its inclusive hospitality. Within this historic place, at the heart of the old city, all receive strength from the ministries of worship, education, and congregational nurture, and leave equipped to respond to the ever changing needs of the community and the world. Central as it appeared in 1937 provides a backdrop for the Palm Sunday march on Capitol Hill.

Book excerpt: Mount Pleasant--Samuel P. Brown must have thought the name perfect when he chose it for his country estate on a wooded hill overlooking Washington City. The name also suited the New Englanders who settled in the village that Brown founded near Fourteenth Street and Park Road just after the Civil War. Around 1900, the once-isolated village began its transformation into a fashionable suburb after the city extended Sixteenth Street through Mount Pleasant's heart, and a new streetcar line linked the area to downtown. Developers constructed elegant apartment buildings and spacious brick row houses on block after block, and successful businessmen built stately residences along Park Road. Change arrived again with the Great Depression and then World War II, as the suburb evolved into an urban, exclusively white, working-class enclave that eventually became mostly African American. In addition, a Latino presence was evident as early as the 1960s. By the 1980s, the neighborhood was known as the heart of D.C.'s Latino and counterculture communities. Today these communities are dispersing, however, in response to a booming real estate market in Washington, D.C.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ascending to heaven, Jesus Christ gave the church the Great Commission to expand the gospel to all nations. Despite this biblical commission, it is still an unfinished task. As leaders of local churches, pastors play a crucial part in this endeavor. Pastoral leadership principles have varied widely throughout history, yet it is interesting to discover the similarities between pastoral leadership principles practiced by John Chrysostom (AD 347-407) in Antioch and Constantinople, and Won Sang Lee (1937-) in Washington, DC. Despite ministering 1600 years apart, both pastors share the same core values: care for people, Christ-like character, biblical preaching, and world missions. This suggests that continued emphasis on these principles will play a significant role in fulfilling the Great Commission, independent of time and place.
