Excerpt: ... the eruptions which supplied the rhyolite and with a thickness of at least 5,000 feet are admirably exposed in the east-facing escarpment of Stein Mountain, as previously reported. To the west of Harney County, and extending to the east base of the Cascade Mountains, basalt predominates, although much eroded andesitic mountains or buttes and widely extended sheets of tuff of the same general nature are present. The old volcanic piles are represented by the Glass and Hampton buttes, and the sheets of rhyolite," and the still more abundant and more widely spread sheets of rhyolitic tuff, form the surface in the southeast part of Crook County and extend eastward into the northern part of Harney County. Basalt occupies the surface throughout nearly all of the region bordering the Great Sandy Desert and throughout the extensive tract of country in the western portion of Crook County drained by Deschutes River. To a conspicuous extent, as shown in the canyons of the streams, it occurs in comparatively thin sheets resting on lacustral deposits or beds of stratified volcanic tuff. The canyon walls are margined above by black cliffs or rim rocks of basalt forming the eroded margins of sheets which in general are 80 to 125 feet thick. The basalt occurs as widely extended sheets, usually, it is presumed, of Tertiary age, which can not be traced to the craters from which they came, and also as much later flows of a similar character, which in part occupy canyons cut in the older basalt and underlying gravels, sands, and tuffs, and in many instances bear a definite and determinable relation to volcanic craters which still preserve their constructional forms. features of the region, by counties. malheur county. geology and

Book excerpt: Central Oregon consists of the Brothers Fault Zone which separates the Northwest Basin & Range from the High Lava Plains to the north. The High Lava Plains lies south of John Day Country. This book attempts to compile geological features and history of the geomorphic provinces that compose Central Oregon.Chapter 1 presents an introduction to the Brothers Fault Zone. Chapter 2 presents the High Lava Plains characteristic features from physiography to geological overview and settings including Pleistocene lakes, the Harney Basin, and potential geothermal resources. Chapter 3 addresses bimodal volcanism of the High Lava Plains. Chapter 4 presents geological features of the High Lava Plains. Chapter 5 presents an introduction to John Day Country offering a road log for 19 sites from Spray through Kimberly, Monument, Hamilton, Long Creek, Fox Valley, and the Strawberry Range. Chapter 6 begins with the geologic framework of the Clarno Unit in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This chapter features the geologic setting, physiography, and litho-stratigraphic units of the Clarno Formation and John Day Formation. The chapter also presents structural geology, petrology, and depositional settings in both formations. Chapter 7 discusses the geology of the Upper John Day Formation Beds and members, offering regional correlative significance of the upper units. Chapter 8 begins the discussion of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument with an overview and discussion of Paleogene and Neogene global climate change. Both Clarno and John Day formations are summarized. An introduction to paleo-sols is included for the major formations. Geological features are presented at the end of the chapter. Chapter 9 summarizes the geological history of the national monument focusing on global greenhouse to icehouse events in the Tertiary epochs. Chapter 10 provides a field tour of the national monument and surrounding region focusing on the Crooked River and Wildcat Mountain calderas. Chapter 11 closes the book with the continuation of the field trip from the Ochoco Summit eastward to the Painted Hills and Sheep Rock Units.

This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Water Resources of a Portion of South-Central Oregon The rapidly increasing settlement and development of the West which has accompanied the recent industrial expansion of the United States has led to a growth of interest in all of those factors that affect its adaptability to human needs. One of the clearest evidences of this increasing interest is the constant demand for definite and trust worthy information concerning its climate, soils, mineral resources, timber, and water. So great is this demand that the Federal and local bodies which have been organized to study the natural resources are scarcely able to meet it. In the arid and semiarid sections no question is of more vital importance than that of water supply. Where water can be intro duced or developed in abundance colonization will take place; where water exists in limited quantity, sparse settlement is possible; but where water is'not to be had present conditions must continue. The water - resources branch of the United States Geological Survey has for many years been making systematic studies of water supplies, both surface and subsurface, and in connection with work under way in many localities, both in the East and in the West, in the fall of 1906 the writer was assigned to carry out a reconnaissance in south central Oregon. Book Road Guide to the John Day Area of Central Oregon

Download or read book Road Guide to the John Day Area of Central Oregon written by Dennis Bokovoy and published by . This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in a series of geological road guides for National Parks, National Monuments, and other significant geological areas. Parts of the John Day area have become the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The Federal Government has spent millions of dollars upgrading the area, including the building of a new, elaborate visitor center near the old Sheep Rock headquarters. All the exhibits and literature of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument interpret the geological formations, as well as the plants and animals, in terms of long ages and the theory of evolution. This road guide provides the alternative view within the Creation-Flood framework. It provides a mile-by-mile log of significant geological events and features, along with interesting historical tidbits. From the geological data in the area, the road guide shows that the Creation-Flood interpretation is superior to the evolutionary-long ages interpretation. The spiral binding and half-page size allows easy access while driving without damaging the binding of the book.

Book Roadside Geology of Oregon

Download or read book Roadside Geology of Oregon written by Marli Bryant Miller and published by Roadside Geology. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first edition of Roadside Geology of Oregon was published in 1978, it was revolutionarythe first book in a series designed to educate, inspire, and wow nongeologists. Back then, the implications of plate tectonic theory were only beginning to shape geologic research and discussion. Geologists hadnt yet learned that Oregons Klamath and Blue Mountains were pieces of far-traveled island arcs and ocean basins that had been piled against the growing North American continent. Steaming volcanoes, ghost forests, recent landslides, and towns heated with geothermal energy attest to Oregons still-prominent position at the edge of an active tectonic plate. Author, photographer, and geologist Marli Miller has written a completely new second edition based on the most up-to-date understanding of Oregons geology. Spectacular photographs showcase the states splendor while also helping readers understand geologic processes at work. Roadside Geology of Oregon, Second Edition, is a must-have for every Oregon resident, student, and rockhound.
