This book was released on 2006 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1905, as the University of Virginia inaugurated him as its first president, the revered southern educator Edwin Anderson Alderman proposed an education school, despite the thriving existence of normal teachers' colleges, primarily female, throughout the state. John D. Rockefeller Sr. donated $100,000 in support, and the Curry Memorial School of Education was born.In the century since, the Curry School of Education has grown and solidified, struggled and diversified, and raised its expectations and its visibility. It has steered a dedicated course through the challenges of depression, war, student disaffection, and faculty debate by holding true to the visions of Jefferson and Alderman. Always attuned to and often leading the discussion about current educational theories, Curry School faculty, students, and graduates represent the evolution of American education during the twentieth century and into the twenty-first.From its original founding in 1905 to the visions it is now creating for the teachers and children of tomorrow, the Curry School of Education has a distinguished and significant history. In this centennial volume, Eleanor Vernon Wilson chronicles the decisions, responses, programs, initiatives, and accomplishments that together form the panoramic history of the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the University of Virginia’s very inception, slavery was deeply woven into its fabric. Enslaved people first helped to construct and then later lived in the Academical Village; they raised and prepared food, washed clothes, cleaned privies, and chopped wood. They maintained the buildings, cleaned classrooms, and served as personal servants to faculty and students. At any given time, there were typically more than one hundred enslaved people residing alongside the students, faculty, and their families. The central paradox at the heart of UVA is also that of the nation: What does it mean to have a public university established to preserve democratic rights that is likewise founded and maintained on the stolen labor of others? In Educated in Tyranny, Maurie McInnis, Louis Nelson, and a group of contributing authors tell the largely unknown story of slavery at the University of Virginia. While UVA has long been celebrated as fulfilling Jefferson’s desire to educate citizens to lead and govern, McInnis and Nelson document the burgeoning political rift over slavery as Jefferson tried to protect southern men from anti-slavery ideas in northern institutions. In uncovering this history, Educated in Tyranny changes how we see the university during its first fifty years and understand its history hereafter.

Download or read book From VPI to State University written by Warren H. Strother and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T. Marshall Hahn, Jr., became president of Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1962. By the time he left twelve years later, the school had become auniversity. No longer a small military school that emphasized agriculture and engineering for white male undergraduates, Virginia Technical Institute and State University had become a multiracial, coeducational research university with a thriving college of arts and sciences as well as burgeoning graduate programs.Bringing together the biography of a man and the history of an institution through a dozen years of transformation, Strother and Wellenstein discuss the school's tremendous growth in sheer numbers of faculty and students, the increased enrollment of female and non-white students, and the increased emphasis on intercollegiate athletics. From VPI to State University is the story of the transformation of public higher education in the United States -- especially in the South -- in the 1960s. Much of the book relies on the recollections of the people who -- as faculty, administrators, or other leaders -- experienced, even brought about, the changes chronicled in these pages.Warren H. Strother worked with Marshall Hahn for ten years while Hahn transformed VPI into a university. A South Carolina native, Strother grew up in Virginia and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Journalism from Northwest University. After twelve years as a journalist he worked at Virginia Tech from 1964 to 1990.
