Download or read book Social Differentiation written by Danielle Juteau Lee and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Differentiation examines the economic, political, and normatively defined relations that underlie the construction of social categories. Social differentiation, embedded in inequalities of power, status, wealth, and prestige, affects life chances of individuals as well as the allocation of resources and opportunities. Starting with a theoretical framework that challenges many traditional analyses, the contributors focus on four specific strands of social differentiation: gender, age, race/ethnicity, and locality. They explore the historically specific social practices, policies, and ideologies that produce distinct forms of inequality, in turn revealing and explaining such issues as the formation and maintenance of a gendered order; the privileging of prime-age workers; the penalties incurred by visible minorities in the labour market; the highly disadvantaged position of Aboriginals; and the economic decline of agriculture, resource, and fishing dependent regions. By paying special attention to political processes, norms, and representations, and by indicating how social policies shape economic functioning and relate to normative definitions, this book will interest policy-oriented researchers and decision-makers.
Download or read book Guide to Reference Materials for Canadian Libraries written by Kirsti Nilsen and published by Published for the Faculty of Library and Information Science by University of of Toronto. This book was released on 1992 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **** About itself the 8th edition notes: "Primarily intended as an instructional guide for library personnel and researchers who work with reference materials, the Guide surveys the basic and most familiar or typical resources for general reference work, and for work with the disciplines of the humanities, social sciences, and pure and applied sciences." The 7th edition, titled Guide to basic reference materials . . . , is recommended by ARBA, v.16, but is missed by BCL3 and Sheehy. A solid work marred by the flimsy paper binding--a shockingly bad production decision: a bibliography gets repeated use. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book Advanced Techniques of Population Analysis written by S.S. Halli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although I feel honored to write a foreword for this important book, it is a task that I approach with some trepidation. The topics covered in the book summarize the current state of the art in technical demography. However, my knowledge and expertise with respect to technical demography are limited to the most fundamental and intermediate-level methods; hence, critical commentary on the contents of this volume is beyond my scope in this fore word. Since I have some understanding of the logic and substantive aspects of the methods rather than the complicated mathematics used in describing them, my comments will necessarily be restricted to the book's general or ganization and content. To date, most texts published on technical demography have been limited to traditional demographic methods: sources and limitations of data, life table construction and applications, standardization techniques, various methods for preparing population estimates and forecasts, etc. However, population specialists have in recent years been developing and successfully applying a variety of sophisticated techniques not covered in the more standard intro ductory texts. In addition, many traditional methods that are unique to the demographic discipline have been improved and extended.

In all cases, the issues are broadly integrated with those of the environment. No other book presents such a broad perspective of the field.
