Excerpt: ...made in the Laboratory de l'licole des Ponts et Chaussees show that the elastic limit is well defined for compression and its value is little greater than one-half the ultimate resistance. The coefficients of elasticity as marked in these tables are the true or elastic coefficients. Examination of these tables shows that the coefficient of elasticity is greater for mortars and concretes than for neat mixtures, at least in the case of specimens one month old and kept in moist air. The coefficients increase with age in the case of neat ce ments, but do not change materially with the sizes of the specimens. In another table, not quoted, De Joly shows that the value of the coefficient does not change sensibly for different brands of cements; he also states that the value of the coefficient for tension for any one neat, mortar or concrete specimen is constant, and, as compared to the coefficient of elasticity for compression, is equal, or greater, but never less. The following series of tensile tests on reinforced concrete prisms is also recorded by De Joly in the same volume of the "Annales des Ponts et Chaussees" and is of exceeding interest. Figure I shows the character of the specimens with which the tests were made. The specimens of Type No. I, which were both neat, mortar and concrete mixtures, contained three bars of round iron.78 inch in diameter, placed as shown; all other types were neat cement only. Type No. II. contained five bars of iron of the same dimensions, placed as shown. Type No. III. contained either one round bar.78 inch in diameter, placed at the centre and continuing throughout the entire length of the concrete, or two bars, as shown under the figure marked Type III. In Type No. IV. six specimens were...

Book Lea s Chemistry of Cement and Concrete

Download or read book Lea s Chemistry of Cement and Concrete written by Peter Hewlett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-11-12 with total page 1087 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete deals with the chemical and physical properties of cements and concretes and their relation to the practical problems that arise in manufacture and use. As such it is addressed not only to the chemist and those concerned with the science and technology of silicate materials, but also to those interested in the use of concrete in building and civil engineering construction. Much attention is given to the suitability of materials, to the conditions under which concrete can excel and those where it may deteriorate and to the precautionary or remedial measures that can be adopted. First published in 1935, this is the fourth edition and the first to appear since the death of Sir Frederick Lea, the original author. Over the life of the first three editions, this book has become the authority on its subject. The fourth edition is edited by Professor Peter C. Hewlett, Director of the British Board of Agrement and visiting Industrial Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee. Professor Hewlett has brought together a distinguished body of international contributors to produce an edition which is a worthy successor to the previous editions.

Book Physical Properties of Concrete and Concrete Constituents

Download or read book Physical Properties of Concrete and Concrete Constituents written by Jean-Pierre Ollivier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the rheological properties of fresh concrete, the hydration phenomenon of cement responsible for structuration, the relationship between the characteristics of the porous solid obtained and its mechanical performances or resistance to the aggressive penetration requires a complex knowledge of the physicochemistry of reactive porous materials. The development of simple formulation rules therefore requires the assimilation of this knowledge and a good command of the properties of these materials. The purpose of this book is to provide the mix designer with useful knowledge on granular materials and porous materials, which will enable the innovative design of concrete. Topics covered include the characterization of granular materials, the concepts of porosity and specific surface area, and the transport properties (diffusion and permeation) of concrete. Some of these topics are already covered in other general books dedicated to granular or porous materials. The objective here is to bring them together in one book by adapting them for use by concrete specialists. Applications in the form of exercises are offered at the end of each chapter to enable readers to assimilate the theoretical knowledge and to apply such knowledge to concrete problems encountered in civil engineering. Contents 1. Description of Granular Materials, Definitions. 2. Granulometry. 3. Specific Surface Area of Materials. 4. Voids in Granular Materials and the Arrangement of Grains. 5. Voids in Concrete. 6. The Fundamentals of Diffusion. 7. Permeability.
